Project description
Nature based solutions (NbS) often focus on boosting soil carbon stocks. However, soils are also the main sources of two powerful greenhouse gases, methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Can we slow down climate change by reducing the emissions of these gases? And how might this affect soil carbon stocks? The answers to these questions are key to designing effective NbS for climate change mitigation.
Globally, agricultural soils have lost more than 100 billion tonnes of stored carbon. Recovering some of this lost carbon may boost agricultural productivity and could help to reduce the build-up of atmospheric CO2, thereby slowing climate change. Agricultural soils play a further critical role within the climate system as they are the main source of both CH4 and N2O, the second and third most important greenhouse gases (GHGs), accounting for approximately 20% and 6% of the enhanced global warming effect. Critically, the current focus on carbon sequestration practices may have unintended negative consequences since management that promotes soil carbon storage can increase N2O and CH4 emissions, potentially negating some or all of the associated climate benefits. Identifying approaches that enhance crop productivity, increase soil carbon sequestration, AND reduce N2O and CH4 emissions, is therefore essential if agricultural soils are to play a role in the mitigation of 21st century climate change.
Selection criteria
Applicants for this studentship must have obtained, or be about to obtain, a First or Upper Second Class UK Honours degree, or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in an appropriate area of science or technology.
If English is not your first language you will need to meet the required level (Profile B) as per our guidance at https://www.exeter.ac.uk/pg-research/apply/english/.
This award provides annual funding to cover both home and international tuition fees and a tax-free stipend. International applicants will have the cost of the student visa, the healthcare surcharge and the travel costs of moving to the UK covered by the project.
