About the Project
Much of the contemporary empirical economic studies looks to answer specific questions, rather than provide a general understanding of, say, GDP growth. This agenda targets the causal effects of a single factor, with focus on answering policy questions like the effects of Brexit on the UK economy or education reforms on income.
During the past few decades, econometrician have been dedicated to developing econometric techniques for identifying causal effects, and they have made significant progress. In particular, the 2021 Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to Prof. Joshua Angrist of MIT and Prof. Guido Imbens of Stanford University “for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships”.
While the econometrics of causal inference is developing fast, this PhD project aims to make its own contributions and try to identify causal effects with the help of most recent progress made in Econometrics. In particular, you may choose from the following topics to develop your PhD thesis, and make either (both) applied or (and) theoretical contribution:
1. Causal Inference using Panel Date and Its Applications
2. Causal Inference using Network Data and Its Applications
3. Causal Inference using Machine Learning and Its Applications
Eligibility requirements:
Applicants should have a master degree in Economics or on a related discipline. Strong backgrounds in statistics or econometrics would be preferable. Applicants will also need to meet the University’s English Language requirements. We offer pre-sessional courses that can help with meeting these requirements.
