Position Overview

Duke Kunshan University (DKU) is seeking applications for one open position as Instructors for Chemistry Teaching Labs at its interdisciplinary liberal arts Undergraduate Program (UG). We provide an international and vibrant working environment with career pathways in either teaching or administrative directions. Salary is internationally competitive and commensurate with experience and education background. Successful candidates will be supporting course instructions of laboratory sessions as well as undergraduate research in the UG Division of Natural and Applied Sciences (DNAS).

Duke Kunshan University is a partnership of Duke University, Wuhan University, and the Municipality of Kunshan, China. DKU located in Kunshan China, about 30 km from Shanghai. DKU offers a series of graduate degree programs and launches its undergraduate degree program in 2018. Our campus provides an innovative, interdisciplinary undergraduate liberal arts experience to a student body that will number 2000 students and 150+ faculty, with a student body represented by over 60 countries. The Instructors for Teaching Labs will play an important role in delivering integrated and interdisciplinary teaching for the new UG program and contribute to the development of undergraduate research. Reports to

Chair of Division of Natural and Applied Sciences

Essential Duties

1. Support lab instructions under supervision of the course instructors, to support science courses on the DKU campus in China.

2. Teach the lab within the context of the course and provide a constant presence in labs.

3. Introduce lab activities when appropriate.

4. Ensure the students understand the issues of experimental design, error in measurement, data analysis, and control treatments or conditions.

5. Ensure safe lab practices.

6. Support undergraduate research in collaboration with faculty members in the division.

7. Assist in grading lab notebooks when requested.

8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

1. Candidates must hold a M.S. or Ph.D. Degree in a relevant discipline, including but not limited to chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science, environmental science. Teaching experience is desirable, as is experience working in labs in an international setting.

2. Willing to work in a multidisciplinary and intercultural environment.

3. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English are desirable.

4. Good organizational skills and knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, and procedures.

5. Strong communication skills and ability to work within a team environment.

Position Overview

Duke Kunshan University (DKU) is a Sino-US Joint Venture University approved by the Ministry of Education and co-founded by Duke University, Wuhan University and Kunshan City Government. DKU is a non-profit public welfare social organization with independent legal status. The campus is located in Kunshan Yangcheng Lake Science Park, Jiangsu Province.

DKU seeks to appoint multiple lab technicians for undergraduate program in chemistry direction. Working closely with lab managers and instructors, the lab technician will support the emerging, interdisciplinary courses and curricula, such as assisting in teaching laboratories and course projects, maintain shared lab facilities, assist in lab safety training, assist in arranging workshops and tutorials in order to support research projects associated with undergraduate signature work.

Essential Duties

1. Undertake, where appropriate, the first line maintenance of equipment/resources; evaluate test proposed new teaching equipment.

2. Liaise with suppliers and contractors on the servicing, repair and testing of lab equipment.

3. Maintain an inventory of equipment & spares in collaboration with asset management office, procurement and finance departments to assume regular tracking of lab equipment.

4. Assist in setting up shared lab equipment policy, rules, guidelines as well as internal website to optimize the use of existing equipment.

5. Assist in sourcing of materials, consumables and equipment.

6. Support academic staff in developing new and enhancing existing experiments and preparing manuals and guides.

7. Advise students on the best types of equipment for their projects and help train them in its proper use.

8. Ensure compliance with all relevant aspects of health & safety whilst undertaking duties.

9. Ensure all lab users comply with all relevant aspects of health & safety.

10. Support the development of lab procedures and ensure users are trained in those procedures.

11. Ensure that allocated areas are kept in good order and safety devices are in place and operational.

12. Ensure all waste produced is disposed of in accordance with University procedures.

13. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

1. A masters degree in chemistry. Candidates with a relevant bachelors degree with 3+ years of working experience will also be considered.

2. Fluency in both English and Chinese.

3. Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment.

4. In depth knowledge of QHSE Systems, preventative measures and laboratory best practices.

5. Good organizational skills and knowledge of applicable rules, regulations and procedures.

6. Good communication and problem-solving skills.

7. Experience in handling materials synthesis and characterization, as well as environmental science relevant equipment is preferred.

8. Experience with computational tools including Matlab, Labview, Python programming and software packages for statistics is preferred.

Position Overview

Duke Kunshan University (DKU) is seeking applications for one open position as Instructor for Data and Computer Science Teaching Labs at its interdisciplinary liberal arts Undergraduate Program (UG). Successful candidates will be supporting course instructions of laboratory sessions in the UG Division of Natural and Applied Sciences (DNAS). Successful candidate will receive mentoring in teaching that prepares him / her well for future career development. The innovative undergraduate curriculum at DKU also enables successful candidate to be involved in undergraduate research activities in collaboration with faculties within the division.

Position Overview

4. Extensive experience in using MS Office, JAVA, Python, SQL and other script languages is required.

5. Familiar with Linux Shell and Linux Service (Crontab, NFS, SFTP, SSH).

6. Familiar with PHP, HTML, JS, CSS and Web services (Apache, Nginx), SSL etc.

7. Past experience in undergraduate and/or graduate education (e.g., experience as a teaching assistant) is preferred.

The postholder will undertake fundamental, applied and translational research in areas of sustainable materials and process development that will lead to reduced energy consumption/carbon footprint/waste/ environmental impact and improved product recyclability/reuse/recovery/ repair. This includes:

1. Development of novel, eco-friendly and cost-effective materials synthesis, materials processing and manufacturing.

2. Design & develop new clean and sustainable materials, devices/system for clean energy production/ storage, and biosensors/biocompatible implants applications.

3. Development of smart & durable materials, devices or system (with integrated structural health monitoring), and self-sensing for engineering applications.

4. Modelling, design and development of sustainable, durable and smart multifunctional materials, devices or systems for a range of applications, including but not limiting to clean energy production, energy storage, biosensors, bioimplants, and structural monitoring in engineering industries.

Essential Duties

1. Conduct research and development of nanoscale multifunctional thin films and coatings for clean energy generation and storage, engineering, transport, optoelectronics and healthcare applications, especially with respect to materials design and discovery, chemical precursor formulation, deposition, characterization and optimization of materials, device fabrication and performance evaluation.

2. Perform relevant literature survey, equipment design and integration, cost and life cycle analysis of the process and equipment scale up.

3. To undertake the development of non-vacuum chemical-based deposition of durable, robust and high performance superthin/thin/thick films, multilayer films, and nanocomposite coatings as well as to evaluate their performance.

4. To complete safety and risk assessments of experimental work in relation to material synthesis, handling of chemical precursor and nanomaterials and process scale up.

5. Responsible for ensuring that equipment is safe and maintained in working order as well as observation of Fire and Health & Safety Regulations.

6. To support research grant preparation and applications.

7. To support the coordination and management of research projects.

8. Procure and liaise with external materials and equipment suppliers.

9. Record progress in a laboratory book, analyses and write up the experimental results.

10. Ensure all tasks and project deliverables are submitted in a timely manner.

11. Prepare technical reports and high-quality scientific papers to refereed journals.

12. Prepare progress reports and presentations on funded research to funding bodies, project partners/collaborators and wider scientific community as required.
