Collaborative Postdoctoral Researcher Opening

The project will investigate how non-covalent interactions in associating polymers drive nanoscale self-assembly. In this project, the postdoctoral researcher will primarily use experimental characterization methods to explore the effects of changes in polarization on the interactions between polymers in solution and nanoscale self-assembly. Specifically, the project will investigate Lewis adduct-induced self-assembly as highlighted in a recent publication (Hilaire, Xu, Mei, Riggleman, Hickey ACS Polym. Au 2022, 2, 35). The collaboration is between Profs. Rob Hickey (Penn State) and Rob Riggleman (UPenn). The Hickey group will be the experimentalists, which will entail forming colloidal nanoscale structures and characterizing them using X-ray scattering, dynamic light scattering, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. Furthermore, the postdoctoral researcher will have the opportunity to visit UPenn and learn polymer theory/simulation in the Riggleman group.

The research will focus on using a family of Lewis acids (LAs) and Lewis bases (LBs), that can be incorporated in either monomer or polymer form, to change polymer polarization upon formation of Lewis adducts. Over the course of this project the postdoctoral researcher will systematically: i) investigate the impact of the binding strength and resulting dipole moment on the non-covalent interactions and phase behavior of polymer/molecule/solvent systems, ii) determine and control the entropy and enthalpy of Lewis adduct formation using polymerized LAs and polymerized LBs, and iii) explore reversible self-assembly of block copolymers triggered by LAs or LBs.

We are looking for a highly motivated, self-driven, collaborative, and skilled researcher with a polymer background and has experience with molecular and structural characterization methods such as nuclear magnetic resonance, light and X-ray scattering, dielectric relaxation spectroscopy, and transmission electron  microscopy. The position is available as soon as Oct. 15th, 2022, for a period of one year with the option of renewing depending on performance.

Interested candidates should send their cover letter and CV to Prof. Rob Hickey at rjh64@psu.edu.
