1.PhD position in History
Officially founded in 2012, Basel's Department of History succeeds the 125-year-old Historisches Seminar, and is now one of six departments in the Faculty of the Humanities at the University of Basel. The Department has eight professors who are, together with about 100 staff members, responsible for research and teaching in the historical sciences. Approximately 900 students currently study history at Basel.
The Department of History at the University of Basel, Switzerland invites applications for a four-year PhD position in History.
Period of contract: 1 January 2023, for 4 years
Activity rate: 100%
Deadline for receipt of applications: 15 May 2022
Swiss National Science Foundation (PRIMA) project: “Red Tower of Babel: Soviet Minorities Experiment in Interwar Ukraine"
The successful candidate will be member of the research group “Red Tower of Babel: Soviet minorities experiment in interwar Ukraine", funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation and directed by Dr. Olena Palko. The project aims to provide a first of its kind comprehensive study of the Soviet minority regime as implemented during the 1920s-1930s within the borders of Soviet Ukraine. Various ethnic minorities are the primary focus of this project, which aims to scrutinise the Soviet minority experiment at various levels of power, from top to bottom, paying particular attention to its grassroots reception.
Within this general frame the holder of the PhD position will conduct an independent, although thematically related project, that would extend the scope of Dr Palko's project either geographically – by investigating yet another Soviet republic; or chronologically looking at the continuation of the Soviet minority policies at a later period in Soviet history.
The successful candidate is expected to hold a university degree (MA or equivalent) in History (or a related discipline). Good knowledge of English or German, as well as working knowledge of Russian and – depending on the proposed project's scope, one other language of the former Soviet republics, and experiences in the field of Soviet history are essential. The candidate is expected to take residence in Basel during the contract.
The Department of History at the University of Basel provides excellent research and employment conditions in a stimulating academic environment. You pursue your dissertation project within a collaborative framework, affiliated as a member of the Basel Graduate School of History. 4.Material Characterization and Transfer Printing of Electrodes on Thin-film Semimetal Crystals
The work will be performed at the FMolina-Lopez group (https://www.molina-lopezresearchlab.com/), within the “Surface and Interface Engineered Materials” unit at the Department of Materials Engineering of KU Leuven, and under the direct supervision of Prof. F. Molina-Lopez. The project is part of a larger collaboration with other institutions in Belgium, within the framework of the project CONNECT (https://www.eos-connect.be/?page_id=183). Therefore, a strong interaction with IMEC and UC Lovain is expected.
Website unit
Project
The framework of this project is the CONNECT project (https://www.eos-connect.be/?page_id=183), which deals with topological materials, including the recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals (WSM). These materials present quantum effects leading to surprising energy and heat transport properties at cryogenic temperatures. In particular, they are potential excellent thermoelectrics, i.e., they can convert heat to charge current and vice versa with an efficiency much larger than traditional Peltier thermoelectric materials. Hence, they may find applications as disruptive sensors or very low temperature refrigerators for the next generation of quantum computers. Our partners at IMEC and the Department of Physics will synthesize high-quality WSM that will be thermally and electrically characterized at cryogenic temperatures at UC Lovain. However, before their thermoelectric characterization, the morphology of the thin films must be thoroughly studied, and electrodes must be patterned on the films surface to access their macroscopic electrical characteristics. Those tasks will make the core of this position.
We are looking for a motivated PhD candidate or postdoctoral researcher who will study the morphology and crystalline structure of thin WSM films with XRD, SEM and TEM. Then, he/she will develop a method to pattern electrodes on the surface of the WSM. Since WSM are extremely sensitive to their environment, the electrodes must be patterned under nitrogen atmosphere and avoiding the use of solvents. Hence, methods such as microcontact printing or liquid metal dispensing will be explored.
This work involves strong interaction with the partners of the project who will grow the WSM (Prof. C. Merckling from IMEC and colleagues from the Dept. of Physics) and the group performing the cryogenic thermoelectric characterization (Prof. P. Gehring from UC Lovain).
The candidate must write scientific publications and present at international conferences. Postdoctoral researchers must also contribute to grant writing to develop their skills as independent researchers.
Profile
We are looking for an outstanding PhD or Postdoctoral research candidate with:
- Education and training in Applied Physics or Engineering focused on experimental work in material science:
Experience working in a chemistry lab and/or glovebox.
Hands-on experience with crystalline materials characterization and electronic microscopy, especially TEM.
Interest in electronic/energy materials and/or nanomaterials.
- Solid theoretical knowledge in two or more of the following fields: nano/microfabrication, printed electronics, crystalline materials characterization, solid-state physics.
- For postdoctoral candidates, a strong publication record is required: 3 or more peer-reviewed papers in Q1 journals, and presentation in at least two international conferences.
- Proven track record of teamwork, demonstrated through joint papers, participation in consortium-based projects, etc.
- Willingness to navigate an interdisciplinary and fast-paced working environment.
- An international profile with experience working in different countries is desirable.
- Fluency in spoken and written English is mandatory.
- Other: please feel free to highlight it in the motivation letter.
Offer
The position includes competitive salary, medical care, and research and conference expenses for: 1 year for postdoctoral researchers (with possibility to extend 1 or 2 more years), or 4 years for PhD candidates.
The project is part of the CONNECT project, funded by the FWO and FNRS. We offer an exciting environment where to thrive as an independent researcher. KU Leuven ranks among the top 50 universities in the world (top 11 in Engineering in Europe) according to the "Times Higher Education" ranking 2022 and ranks #7 (top in Europe) in the "World’s Most Innovative Universities" ranking elaborated by Reuters. KU Leuven offers an exciting multi-disciplinary research environment, top-notch facilities, and a broad range of training courses for staff.
Located in Belgium, at the heart of Europe, and less than 3 hours by train from cities like Paris, London or Amsterdam, Leuven is a cultural and historical city with a vibrant international student lifestyle.

Project
Testing software is very important, but not done well, resulting in problematic and erroneous software applications. The underlying cause is a mismatch between what is needed in industry, the learning needs of students and the way testing is currently being taught in higher education courses. The ENACTEST research project will investigate cognitive models for learning testing, industry needs for testing skills and knowledge transfer processes. The goal is to design and develop didactic tools and learning capsules for teaching testing skills that consider the cognitive models of students and the industry needs, and to validate the effectiveness of these tools and learning capsules through experimental research.
As a PhD-student, you are expected, next to your main research tasks, to participate in seminars and conferences, to enrol in the PhD program of the Faculty of Economics and Business, and to perform a limited amount of educational duties (e.g. supervising student master's thesis).
