Based on encouraging recent progress made in multimodal imaging, this PhD program aims to develop and validate a cutting-edge X-ray and neutron computed tomography method, tailored for the in-situ study of corrosion phenomena in opaque porous media.

In combination with well-proven corrosion science methods, this novel imaging technique will allow the development of a new experimental approach to study corrosion processes in opaque media, such as steel corrosion in concrete or soil.

The aim of this project is to utilize the new approach described above to fundamentally study the mechanism of iron corrosion in cementitious porous media.

The project will be primarily of experimental nature and involve techniques from corrosion science, electrochemistry, cement and concrete science, and X-ray and neutron computed tomography.

The work will closely interface with other activities in this project, in particular, imaging work will be carried out at PSI.

申请资格

Eligibility

Hold an MSc degree preferably in materials science, corrosion science, civil engineering or related areas.

Previous experience and knowledge in corrosion is useful but not needed.

Have a strong interest in cement and concrete science as well as microstructural characterization and imaging.

Proficiency in written and oral English as well as maturity and self-motivation are necessary.

Be curious and enthusiastic about what this program does.
