Grant for scientific research - Call for applications
Senior Research Fellow Jianwei Li (https://www.li-chemlab.com/) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher and a doctoral candidate to join his research group in Systems Chemistry on a grant based position. The group is located the MediCity Research Laboratory at the University of Turku.
Research Project
The aim of the project is to develop active coacervates from dynamic combinatorial libraries. Very recently, the group has made supramolecular plastics processed from small molecule-based coacervates. Supramolecular polymers self-assembled by small molecules are a type of new materials with adaptive and biocompatible properties. However, the mechanical property of these materials is always weak, impeding their applications in practice.
Li’s team demonstrated that coacervation can be used to explore robust and stable bulk materials without the compromise of responsiveness. The liquid-liquid separation process could sequester and concentrate solutes, which facilitated the non-covalent association of building blocks equipped with multiple binding sites and resulted in bulk materials with versatile properties that were highly related to the encapsulated water amounts. It was a robust plastic when the water content was low and became adhesive and could instantly self-heal with more absorbed water. Moreover, the material was reusable and fully recyclable.
The formation of the material was operated in closed systems in other words under equilibrium. To discover more interesting and living property of the materials, the selected researcher will investigate the above materials out of equilibrium. This may lead to capability to dynamically control the mechanical property of the materials and even control their movement precisely.
Applicant
Successful applicants should have a PhD/MSc or equivalent degree in a relevant field (organic chemistry, physical chemistry, materials science, supramolecular chemistry or soft matter in general and systems chemistry in specific). Excellent academic performance and knowledge of written and spoken English are required. Prior experience on research methods in the field in question is desired.
The applicant should familiarize with pension insurance and taxation regulations for recipients of scientific grants and scholarships. The doctoral candidate is expected to enrol in a PhD program in the next possible call.
Grant
The research of selected applicant will be funded for a period of two years for the postdoctoral researcher and four years for the doctoral candidate by monthly personal grants. Amount of the grant is 2700 € for postdoctoral level researcher and 1700 € for PhD level. Grant period starts on September 2022 at the earliest.
How to apply
Please apply on 31 March 2022 at the latest.
CV, a list of publications (if applicable), and a motivation letter should be sent to Jianwei Li (jianwei.li@utu.fi).
