About the Project

The emergence of Optical Ground Stations (OGS) for high throughput space-ground communications, together with the need for quantum-secure encryption provides a compelling opportunity for the deployment of quantum receiver backends to emerging OGS infrastructure. This interdisciplinary PhD will work across boundaries in business, operational and quantum optical engineering to evaluate the opportunities for supporting the rapid deployment and scaling up of UK and allied infrastructure.

The studentship is co-funded by Craft Prospect (https://craftprospect.com/), who have a funded CubeSat mission with the European Space Agency (https://www.ukspace.org/craft-prospect-leading-os2-volt-mission-for-esa/). Through that mission and other missions involving Craft Prospect and Heriot-Watt University, the candidate will have a truly unique experience in exploring the operation and development of OGS, which is hosted by Heriot-Watt University. The candidate will investigate and prototype designs, processes, and protocols. The student will also;

· Conduct hands-on support for the development and demonstration of quantum optical communications

· Conduct scientific measurements with the funded missions

· Work with engineers at Craft Prospect seek to prototype and evaluate value adding components

· Conduct scientific exploration of site measurements, and their application to other sites globally to support further roll out

· Optical ground station technology development

The candidate will be expected to come to Craft Prospect offices at least once every two weeks, for team meetings and potentially for longer periods during test campaigns if not carried out in-the-field at the Heriot-Watt Optical Ground Station. The student will join an experienced team in quantum communications, the Single-Photon Group (https://single-photon.com/), under the supervision of Dr Ross Donaldson (https://researchportal.hw.ac.uk/en/persons/ross-j-donaldson).
