PhD Project
Recognising and appreciating stakeholder needs and values is a crucial component for effective planning and management, especially in highly contested coastal areas. Knowledge about social values becomes even more crucial when we consider assets like marine parks that are shared by and benefit the community at large. The Kimberley coast and its adjoining waters are predominantly encompassed within existing or proposed marine parks. However, there is limited recognition of the social values of marine parks. These values aren't just about the tangible benefits these parks provide but also about the intangible connections people form with these places. Social values can be described as the significance attributed to specific places, landscapes, and the resources they offer, shaped by individual or collective perceptions and attitudes.
It's essential to delve deeper into these social values because they are pivotal in shaping conservation strategies and ensuring sustainable use. By understanding how people perceive and value marine parks, policy makers and managers can make informed decisions that resonate with the public's sentiments. Furthermore, acknowledging these values can foster a sense of shared responsibility in the community, leading to more collaborative and effective conservation efforts. This research, therefore, aims to bridge this knowledge gap and shed light on the intricate web of social values associated with marine parks.
