费拉拉大学招收人机交互博士

Project description

At the Center for Translational Neurophysiology of Speech and Communication (CTNSC), at the Italian Institute of Technology (IIT), we focus our efforts in two integrated directions. On one side we are studying how the brain builds communicative representations. On the other side we are designing new brain interfaces, specifically conceived for human use, to record and computationally decode neural signals.

Sensorimotor communication is of central importance for us, because we believe that many paralyzing pathologies require, at first, the restoring of an efficient information flow between the patient and the environment. Therefore, our research goal is to advance knowledge on brain functioning to help building the next generation of brain-computer interfaces.

The PhD project will focus on advanced neural signal processing and machine learning to develop a new understanding of how multiple brains generate effective informational coupling during motor tasks.

The nervous system is sensitive to the statistical regularities of the external world and forms internal models of these regularities in order to predict environmental dynamics. Given the inherently social nature of human behavior, being capable of building reliable predictive models of othersactions may be essential for successful interaction. While social prediction might seem a daunting task, the study of human motor control has accumulated ample evidence that our movements follow a series of kinematic invariants, which can be used by observers to reduce their uncertainty during social exchanges.

The goals of the proposed project are (i) to quantify information transfer based on the analyses of multi-agent movement capture and (ii) map interpersonal sensorimotor transfer of information into electrophysiological patterns recorded via dual electroencephalography or electrocorticography in patients.

Techniques: electrophysiology, multimodal signal processing, machine learning.

Requirements: The successful candidate will have a degree in computer science, bioengineering, physics, neuroscience or related disciplines and a background in signal processing and/or machine learning.
