About the Programme

Central to this is our large body of postgraduate research students, over 2000 across our departments and over 600 in the Faculty of Social Sciences. As part of The Faculty of Social Sciences, the Doctoral Training Centre (DTC@Sheffield) offers research training to support postgraduate research students at all stages of their work. Opportunities to access training at the University of Leeds and the University of York are also available as part of the White Rose Doctoral Training Centre (WRDTC) provision. The DTC facilitates networking between students and provides training in generic, advanced and transferable skills. There is a vibrant and expansive research community which produces doctoral graduates with outstanding skills and flexibility.
The School of Education.
Driven by cutting edge research that impacts on policy and practice, the University of Sheffield's School of Education is a world leader in its field, with a 100% of research conducted recognised as world leading for its impact by the Research Excellence Framework. Underpinning the work of the school is research centred on social justice and civic engagement. With topics ranging from preschool to higher education, from policy to practice the research expertise of the school is diverse and extensive, with doctoral study offered in two forms; either through the 4 year part time EdD or the PhD, which can be completed either full time or part time.
As one of only a handful of EdD courses to be recognised by research institutes such as the ESRC, we offer a highly recognised qualification in the topics of: educational studies, early childhood education, higher education, language learning and teaching, literacy and language in education, and finally children, schools and families.
PhD supervision in the school is focussed on a diverse range of cutting edge research areas, these strengths fall broadly under the following: educational development and professional lives, higher education, as well as, children, families and learning communities and finally the study of literacies. On top of this vast expertise, the school is keen to encourage those with innovative proposals in a range of areas to apply; to see a full list of our research activities please check our webpages. You are welcome to contact staff directly to discuss your research ideas, though we recommend that you acquaint yourself first with their research work and demonstrate a good understanding of how your research project might align with their expertise.
With a vibrant community of research students, there is a very friendly and inclusive atmosphere in the school. Valued greatly by our team of academics, who invest heavily in their supervision, there is an excellent support network available for our researcher students, which is geared towards fostering the best of their abilities and work.
On top of this the school is successful in securing funding for PhD scholarships; these are competitive and subject to availability.
