Doctoral Researcher, INNOCAP project

INNOCAP (Building public sector innovation capacity towards digital-driven NPA communities) is an EUs NPA (Norther Periphery and Arctic) funded transnational research and development project. INNOCAP has eight partners from Ireland, Iceland, Sweden, and Finland. The overall objective is to provide enhanced quality and sustainable public services by enabling public sector organisations to lead the adoption of digital technologies. A key output will be a capacity building programme that prepares public sector organisations from three NPA geographical zones to pilot and further adopt four novel public services in the areas of climate change action, environmental management, or the digital and green transition.

Ruralia Institute invites applications for a Doctoral Researcher in Spatial Modelling of the Twin Transition (Digital and Green) starting from January 2023, or as agreed. The doctoral researcher will be offered up to 3-year fully funded contract.

Position description

The doctoral researcher will focus on 1) mapping potential spatial and GIS-based tools and 2) identifying open spatial data sets usable in describing the potential of twin transition in the NPA regions. The work includes 3) piloting an easy-to-use solution that builds regional knowledge and public sector capabilities to advance the twin transition. The piloting starts in the South-Savo region in Finland and will be later extended to cover other NPA areas.

Overall, the doctoral researcher is encouraged to pursue their own vision in spatial modelling and conducting doctoral studies leading to a completed PhD thesis at the University of Helsinki. The detailed focus of the PhD project will be designed in collaboration to serve the objectives of the INNOCAP project and interests of the candidate. The doctoral researcher is invited to participate other research projects from the perspective of their expertise.
