The research topic is "The particle breakage mechanism and grouting techniques to improve calcareous sand strength".
Different from silicon sands, calcareous sands mainly comprise calcium carbonate and skeletal residue of marine organisms.
They are widely distributed in a shallow and tropical continental shelf sea.
In offshore engineering such as piling, the calcareous stratum provides low bearing capacity due to volume contraction and particle breakage.
This causes significant challenges and economic implications for engineering practices.
This project aims to understand the particle breakage mechanism and how grouting can improve strength.

Essential:
Masters of Civil (Geotechnical/Structure) Engineering or closely related discipline (equivalent score > 80%)
❖ Meet all relevant criteria to gain entry to the University of Melbourne PhD program
Desirable:
❖ Track-record of high-quality journal publications.
Excellent communication skills in both spoken and written English.
❖ Numerical simulation skills such as DEM, FEM and FVM.
❖ Imaging and image processing skills related to X-ray computed tomography.
