About the Project

Project Summary

Colloidal nanostructures have attracted increasing interest due to the simplicity of the wet-chemistry colloidal synthesis compared to epitaxially grown nanostructures fabricated on a substrate. Owing to the wide tunability by control of shape, size and chemical composition, colloidal nanostructures are relevant for applications, spanning from bio-imaging markers to solar energy harvesting materials, lighting, display, and single photon sources for quantum communication.

Colloidal quantum wells (CQW), quasi two-dimensional nanostructures with atomically precise thickness, have narrow absorption and emission spectra, a key property for applications. However, most of the research was focussed on Cadmium (Cd) based CQWs, which are not sustainable in consumer opto-electronic devices due to their carcinogenic toxicity.

Within this project, you will investigate the optical properties of CQWs moving away from heavy-metals. Firstly, Cd will be replaced by Pb, a less toxic alternative, and then heavy-metal-free compounds InP, ZnSeTe and CuInZnS, will be studied.

Research Environment

You will join a vibrant multi-disciplinary supervisory team and their groups, across the School of Biosciences and School of Physics and Astronomy. The group activities range from solid state physics to colloidal synthesis, bio-imaging and big data analysis, with applications, such as lighting, photovoltaics and biomedical imaging and sensing, offering cross-disciplinary training and development opportunities.

Eligibility

EPSRC DTP studentships are available to home students.

Cardiff University is committed to support students from a range of backgrounds and circumstances. Where needed, we will work with you to take into consideration reasonable project adaptations (for example to support caring responsibilities, disabilities, other significant personal circumstances) as well as flexible working and parttime study requests, to enable greater access to a PhD. All our supervisors support us with this aim, so please feel comfortable in discussing further with the listed PhD project supervisor to see what is feasible.

Cardiff University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity and to creating an inclusive environment for all. We welcome applications from all members of the global community irrespective of age, disability, sex, gender identity, gender reassignment, marital or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief and sexual orientation.

We welcome applications for both full and part-time study and from candidates with non-traditional academic backgrounds. For further information about modes of study, please contact us.

Assessment

Applicants are reminded to submit all relevant documents (transcripts, supporting statement, etc) by the deadline. Due to the volume of applications received, incomplete applications will not be considered. Short-listed applicants will be invited to interview. As part of the interview process, applicants will be asked to give a short presentation and answer a series of panel questions.

Interviews are expected to take place remotely via Zoom/Teams. Applicants can expect to hear the outcome of their interview within 1 week.
