明斯特大学招收物理学博士

About the Project

45,000 students and 8,000 employees in teaching, research and administration, all working together to shape perspectives for the future that is the University of Münster (WWU). Embedded in the vibrant atmosphere of Münster with its high standard of living, the Universitys diverse research profile and attractive study programmes draw students and researchers throughout Germany and from around the world.

The Institute of Physics in the Faculty of Physics at the University of Münster, Germany, is seeking to fill the position of a Doctoral Research Associate Wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in (salary level TV-L E 13, 65%) at the earliest possible date. We are offering a fixed-term part-time position (65%) for 3 years. Full-time employees are required to teach 4 hours per week during the semester.

Your tasks:

This position is tied to working towards a doctorate. The project involves the characterization of metaloxide surfaces and inherent defects by noncontact atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy (NC-AFM/STM) with a focus on the atomic-scale control of the probe tips in these experiments. This not only enables a drastic increase of the spatial resolution, it also provides a chemically selective contrast in the acquired data. Moreover, force spectroscopy experiments provide quantitative access to chemical interactions in atomically defined junctions with a force resolution in the piconewton regime. Funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG), the project sets out to establish a completely new level in the characterization of catalytically- and opto-electronically active defects, which is highly relevant for the development of corresponding functional (quantum-) materials. The NC-AFM/STM experiments are performed under ultrahigh vacuum conditions and at low temperatures (78 K, and 5 K) on different metal-oxide material systems and are complemented by photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS/UPS).

The successful candidate will have access to the state-of-the-art laboratories at the Center for Nanotechnology (CeNTech) in Münster. The international and interdisciplinary environment at the Physics Institute and CeNTech provides an excellent infrastructure that facilitates dynamic scientific exchange across the traditional disciplines.

Our expectations:

An excellent masters degree in physics or physical chemistry is required. Experience using ultrahigh vacuum techniques and/or methods of surface characterization (e.g. scanning probe microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy) would be an advantage.

The University of Münster strongly supports equal opportunity and diversity. We welcome all applicants regardless of sex, nationality, ethnic or social background, religion or worldview, disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity. We are committed to creating family-friendly working conditions.

We actively encourage applications by women. Women with equivalent qualifications and academic achievements will be preferentially considered unless these are outweighed by reasons which necessitate the selection of another candidate.
