QJM-AN INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MEDICINE
Instructions to authors
QJM welcomes contributions relevant to the science and practice of medicine.
Original articles, describing either clinical research or basic scientific work, should include a structured abstract of fewer than 250 words under the headings: background, aim, design, methods, results, and conclusions. The article should be 2,000-2,500 words in length, include no more than 35 references, and ideally no more than four figures.
QJM has launched a specific section within the Journal for translational science. We are inviting translational science submissions of high impact manuscripts of bench-based research that has a strong translational science focus and that potentially has direct relevance to specific diseases. Manuscript guidelines are similar to those for submission of "original articles".
Review articles on advances in clinical medicine or medical science should be up to 2,000 words in length, contain up to 25 references, and include one table, figure, or picture. Unsolicited review articles are not encouraged. It is recommended that ideas for review articles are discussed in advanced with the editorial team. Please contact the editorial office at qjm.editorialoffice@oup.com regarding review articles.
Commentaries expressing personal or controversial views on any medical topic should be no more than 1,000 words, include up to 10 references, and contain one figure, table, or picture. Unsolicited commentaries are not encouraged. It is recommended that ideas for commentaries are discussed in advanced with the editorial team. Please contact the editorial office at qjm.editorialoffice@oup.com regarding commentaries.
Letters to the Editor should be focused and succinct with fewer than 250 words.
Correspondence, an opportunity to communicate a specific focused point of view, or comment on matters arising from articles published in this journal. Consequently, it is recommended that correspondence be no more than 500 words in length with no more than x 6 references.
QJM also accepts case reports, a category intended for brief highly informative cases illustrated with a single table or critical image [selected figure may have x 2 illustrations labelled (a) and (b)]. Articles submitted as case reports should have six references or fewer, and be no more than 600 words. As part of QJM’s educational remit, we ask authors to enclose with the case report a ‘Learning Point for Clinicians’ paragraph of up to 50 words. Please refer to the ‘Consent for Case Reports’ paragraph below for information about patient consent forms.
Clinical pictures should be no more than 500 words. Ideally, we suggest 200-300 words. Only one figure file is allowed for the image. The selected figure file may contain two images (labelled figure 1a and 1b). Clinical pictures should have six references or fewer. The patient's consent is required for photographs of the patient. Consent should be in the form of a letter (written by author or patient) and must be signed by the patient.
Coda: provides an opportunity for authors to submit a personal view on matters relating to their experiences. The Coda can contain up to 750 words, up to 3 references and can include a single picture/table or graph. As per all submitted manuscripts they are subject to external review.
We aim to offer rapid review and publication of accepted articles and to aid this process, contributors are asked to follow these guidelines.
Invitation to submit photographs for QJM cover: We would like to invite our readers to submit photographs for consideration for the cover of the QJM. Photographs can be in black and white or colour and of high definition ( > 300 dpi, File size < 5MB). Please provide a brief caption and include a credit for the photographer or artist. Please email your images to qjmedj.oup@kwglobal.com.
Manuscript submission: QJM uses a web-based submission and review system. Detailed instructions on how to use this system can be found on this page. Once you have prepared your manuscript according to the instructions below, please visit the online submission system. Original papers should include a structured abstract of fewer than 250 words under the headings: background, aim, design, methods, results, and conclusions. We suggest that authors consult a recent issue of the journal to ensure that their manuscript corresponds to the usual QJM style.
