Israel Journal of Plant Sciences
Instructions for Authors
Scope
The Israel Journal of Plant Sciences (IJPS) is an international journal of extensive scope that publishes (special) issues dealing with all aspects of plant sciences, including but not limited to: physiology, cell biology, development, botany, genetics, ecology, evolution, ecophysiology, plant-microbe interaction, agronomy, and soil-plant-atmosphere continuum.
Ethical and Legal Conditions
The publication of a manuscript in a peer-reviewed work is expected to follow standards of ethical behavior for all parties involved in the act of publishing: authors, editors, and reviewers. Authors, editors, and reviewers should thoroughly acquaint themselves with Brill’s publication ethics, which may be downloaded here: brill.com/page/ethics/publication-ethics-cope-compliance.
Online Submission
IJPS uses online submission only. Authors should submit their manuscript online via the Editorial Manager (EM) online submission system at: editorialmanager.com/ijpsbrill.
First-time users of EM need to register first. Go to the website and click on the "Register Now" link in the login menu. Enter the information requested. During registration, you can fill in your username and password. If you should forget your Username and Password, click on the "send login details" link in the login section, and enter your e-mail address exactly as you entered it when you registered. Your access codes will then be e-mailed to you.
Prior to submission, authors are encouraged to read the ‘Instructions for Authors’. When submitting via the website, you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files.
A revised document is uploaded the same way as the initial submission. The system automatically generates an electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing purposes. All correspondence, including the editor’s request for revision and final decision, is sent by e-mail.
Single-blind Peer Review
IJPS uses a single-blind peer review system, which means that manuscript author(s) do not know who the reviewers are.
Contact Address
For any questions or problems relating to your manuscript, please contact the Editor-in-Chief, Haya Friedman (hayafr@volcani.agri.gov.il). For questions about Editorial Manager, authors can also contact the Brill EM Support Department: em@brill.com.
Submission Requirements
All manuscripts are initially screened for their topic suitability and linguistic quality.
Language
IJPS publishes articles in English. Contributions should be grammatically correct and in good literary style. All spelling should be consistent.
Font
For ordinary Roman style text Arial and Times New Roman that come with Microsoft Windows are fine.
For extended characters, authors should ensure that they use a Unicode friendly font such as the Brill font (brill.com/about/brill-fonts).
Unicode and Non-Roman Fonts
The Editors request the use of Unicode-friendly fonts only. Updated versions of Times New Roman in Microsoft Windows contain Greek Unicode fonts. If you have any questions about fonts or any other issue, please contact the editors.
Length
Articles should be between 6,000 and 9,000 words in length. Reviews should comprise between 6,000 and 12,000 words. Short communications should be of an appropriate length.
Manuscript Structure
Title Page
All manuscripts should begin with a title page that includes the manuscript type (e.g. full article, review or short communication), manuscript title, and author list complete with affiliations. Multiple authors should be labelled with superscript letters (a, b, c, not numbers) after the author's family name. The corresponding author should be marked with an asterisk and the full address, and e-mail should be added on the title page.
Abstract and Keywords
All manuscripts should be accompanied by an abstract in English of no more than 300 words and a list of no more than seven keywords
Headings
The First Level Heading
The Second Level Heading
Figures and Tables
Figures should be submitted as separate source files in .eps, .tiff, or .jpg format, in a size suitable for the typesetting area of the journal, or pasted at the end of the manuscript. The resolution of these files should be at least 300 dpi for half-tone figures, and 600 dpi for line drawings. Please number the files and ensure they are of sufficient resolution at submission, otherwise unnecessary delays in production may occur if we need to contact you for higher resolution figures. The text in a figure must be legible, and should not be smaller than 7 pt. The size of this lettering for any text in a figure should be the same for all figures in the manuscript. There should be a separate page in the manuscript file, following the references list, giving the full list of figure legends, which should include any necessary keys to symbols.
Scale bars on each figure or photograph should be included to indicate magnification/reduction. There is no charge for full color images or figures in either the print or electronic edition. Tables should be kept as simple as possible with at least 3 horizontal lines and additional lines if appropriate, data ordered in a convenient way. The title should give all details that are needed to understand the table except obvious footnotes. Figures should be labelled with consecutive Arabic numbers (e.g. Fig. 1, Fig. 2), and separate parts of figures with capital letters (e.g. Fig. 3A-B). Tables should be labelled with consecutive Roman numbers (e.g. Table I, Table II).
Supplementary Data Files
To support and enhance your manuscript, IJPS accepts electronic supplementary material, including supporting applications, high-resolution images, background datasets, large appendices, data tables and other items that cannot be included in the article PDF itself. Authors should ensure that supplementary material is mentioned in the main text of the manuscript, and submit the material in electronic format together with the other manuscript files and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. In order to ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of the broadly accepted file formats and limit the file size (e.g., max. 3 GB). Supplementary files supplied will be published online at FigShare (www.figshare.com), to which reference is made in the published article on Brill Online Books and Journals, and vice versa. All supplementary material should be referred to in the text (Fig. 1, supplementary, Table I, supplementary).
References
The reference list containing all the material cited in the body text is placed at the end of the article. All items cited in the text must be in this list, and if numerous references are grouped they should be ordered by the earliest date of publication (e.g. Bernstein, 2005; Smith et al., 2007; Bernstein and Shoresh, 2014;). All items in the reference list must be cited somewhere in the text. The list is alphabetical, based on the last name of the first author. If there are two or more works by the same author, they are arranged chronologically according to year of publication, with earliest date first (e.g. Bernstein, 2006a; 2006b; 2008).

Publication
Proofs
Upon acceptance, a PDF of the article proofs will be sent to authors by e-mail to check carefully for factual and typographic errors. Authors are responsible for checking these proofs and are strongly urged to make use of the Comment & Markup toolbar to note their corrections directly on the proofs. At this stage in the production process, only minor corrections are allowed. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage will result in considerable delay in publication and, therefore, are not accepted unless charged to the author. Proofs should be returned promptly.
E-offprints
A PDF file of the article will be supplied free of charge by the publisher to authors for personal use. Brill is a RoMEO yellow publisher. The Author retains the right to self-archive the submitted (pre-peer-review) version of the article at any time. The submitted version of an article is the author's version that has not been peer-reviewed, nor had any value added to it by Brill (such as formatting or copy editing). The Author retains the right to self-archive the accepted (peer-reviewed) version after an embargo period of 12 months. The accepted version means the version which has been accepted for publication and contains all revisions made after peer reviewing and copy editing, but has not yet been typeset in the publisher’s lay-out. The publisher’s lay-out must not be used in any repository or on any website (brill.com/resources/authors/publishing-books-brill/self-archiving-rights).
Consent to Publish
Transfer of Copyright
By submitting a manuscript, the author agrees that the copyright for the article is transferred to the publisher if and when the article is accepted for publication. For that purpose, the author needs to sign the Consent to Publish which will be sent with the first proofs of the manuscript.
Open Access
Should the author wish to publish the article in Open Access he/she can choose the Brill Open option.
This allows for non-exclusive Open Access publication under a Creative Commons license in exchange for an Article Publication Charge (APC), upon signing a special Brill Open Consent to Publish Form.
More information on Brill Open can be found on brill.com/brillopen.
