The journal is dedicated to providing in-depth analysis of key mechanisms and principles in the field of agricultural environments, broadening multidimensional research perspectives across disciplines, and offering a high-level academic exchange platform for researchers in agricultural environments and related fields worldwide. Through these efforts, AES serves to guide profound innovation and frontier advancements within these domains.
Key thematic areas include, but are not limited to:
Agricultural Resource Conservation and Sustainable Utilization
(Monitoring, protection, and efficient/safe use of agricultural and rural resources such as water, soil, air, and biodiversity; resource recycling and high-value utilization of agricultural waste; nutrient management)
Agroecosystems and Biodiversity
(Stability and sustainability of agroecosystems; ecological security and biodiversity conservation; ecological agriculture; farmland and rural landscape ecology; ecological transformation of agricultural land)
Agricultural Environmental Pollution and Remediation
(Pollution, management, and remediation of agricultural and rural environments; non-point source pollution control and emissions mitigation; water pollution mitigation in agricultural systems)
Climate Change and Agricultural Adaptation
(Agricultural system responses to global climate change; climate-resilient agriculture; innovative models such as climate-smart agriculture, controlled-environment agriculture, urban/peri-urban agriculture, and low-carbon agriculture)
Environmental Health and Food Security
(Soil health; biosafety; risk assessment of farmland environments; ecosystem services in agroecosystems; synergies between environmental health and food security)
Artificial Intelligence and Big Data Applications
(AI-driven identification of agricultural pollution sources; dynamic monitoring and assessment of agroecosystems; precision agriculture systems, precision livestock farming)

(Policy design for sustainable resource governance; decision support systems; rural livelihood transitions; climate adaptation strategies; circular economy frameworks)
Article types
Agricultural Environment and Sustainability (AES) accepts various types of manuscripts, including original research articles, reviews, commentaries, letters, and perspectives. The description of each manuscript type in detail is shown as below:
1. Original Research Article
• Length Limit: 8,000 words
• Figures/Tables: Up to 6
• Description: Original Research Articles report significant, novel findings that advance fundamental understanding or practical innovation in agricultural environments, agroecosystems, or sustainable agricultural development. Manuscripts should demonstrate methodological rigor and clear scientific contribution.
2. Review
• Length Limit: 10,000 words (excluding references)
• Figures/Tables: Up to 8
• Description: Review Articles provide comprehensive, critical analyses of published literature on topics relevant to agricultural resource utilization, environmental protection, or sustainability. Authors are expected to synthesize current knowledge, identify research gaps, and propose future directions. Reviews should follow systematic, transparent literature review methods (e.g., defined search strategies and inclusion criteria) to ensure balanced coverage of the field.
3. Commentary
• Length Limit: 2,000 words
• Figures/Tables: Up to 2
• Description: Commentaries offer expert insights on timely issues of scientific, technical, or policy relevance to AES readers. This may include policy forums, scientific opinions, or responses to published articles. Commentaries should be topical, accessible, and thought-provoking, introducing new ideas or perspectives in a concise format. These manuscripts may be peer-reviewed at the editors’ discretion.
4. Letter
• Length Limit: 2,500 words
• Figures/Tables: Up to 3
• Description: Letters (also referred to as Short Communications) present concise reports of original research. They focus on specific, impactful advances in areas such as agricultural environmental monitoring, remediation technologies, or climate-resilient practices. Letters should emphasize clarity and significance, particularly for studies with immediate relevance.
5. Perspective
• Length Limit: 2,500 words
• Figures/Tables: Up to 3
• Description: Perspectives are forward-looking scholarly essays that offer personal viewpoints or critical reflections on emerging trends, future challenges, or conceptual developments in agricultural environmental research. These articles may have a narrower focus than Reviews and are encouraged to stimulate discussion or propose new research agendas.
