Author Guidelines
The Journal of Bone and Mineral Research (JBMR®) is the flagship peer-reviewed publication of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR). The journal publishes highly impactful original manuscripts, reviews, and special articles on basic, translational and clinical investigations relevant to the musculoskeletal system and mineral metabolism. Specifically, the journal is interested in original research on the biology and physiology of skeletal tissues, interdisciplinary research spanning the musculoskeletal and other systems, including but not limited to immunology, hematology, energy metabolism, cancer biology, and neurology, and systems biology topics using large scale “-omics” approaches. The journal welcomes clinical research on the pathophysiology, treatment and prevention of osteoporosis and fractures, as well as sarcopenia, disorders of bone and mineral metabolism, and rare or genetically determined bone diseases.

TYPES OF MANUSCRIPTS PUBLISHED
The JBMR® will consider for peer-review and publication a few manuscript types. Please see a recent Editorial by the JBMR® Editorial team Focusing on the Science - JBMR® Manuscript Types for further details.
Original Research. This category represents the main type of articles published by JBMR® and report results of original research studies that fall within the scope of the journal. Experimental work reported in Original Research manuscripts should be of sufficient novelty and represent a tangible advance in the field to have an impact on future research or clinical practice. In general, confirmatory or purely descriptive studies, including case or case-series reports, are declined, even though they may be well conducted and written. Manuscripts that offer incremental advances to current knowledge are given lesser priority, though in some cases and depending on the degree of advancement, the results may be judged of sufficient merit to warrant publication in JBMR®. Manuscripts reporting results of human observational case-control, cohort, or cross-sectional studies fall into this category, as do studies reporting results of systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Original Articles should be kept to within approximately 30 double-spaced pages of 12-point Times Roman text, including the text of the manuscript, references, figures, figure legends, tables, and table footnotes.
Clinical Trials. Manuscripts reporting on Clinical Trials follow the same guidelines as Original Research articles, except that they describe results of interventional controlled studies on human subjects. Clinical Trials should be registered in ClinicalTrials.gov, or (outside the United States) in any one of the primary registries in the WHO Registry Network, or an International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) approved registry. Manuscripts reporting clinical trials should be kept to within approximately 30 double-spaced pages of 12-point Times Roman text, including the text of the manuscript, references, figures, figure legends, tables, and table footnotes.
Letters to the Editor. The JBMR® welcomes Letters to the Editor that contribute constructively and substantively to scientific dialogue. Letters should address timely and important issues raised in articles recently published in the JBMR® and should be no more than 900 words. Note that the JBMR® only considers Letters to the Editor that comment on papers previously published in the Journal. Letters may not contain unpublished data and the number of references should not exceed 10.
Reviews and Perspectives. The JBMR® publishes Reviews and Perspectives on topics selected by the editors. Reviews summarize the current status of an area of investigation, or critically discuss the evidence on a controversial topic, providing some interpretative models that may be useful to inform future research. Perspectives look at the future and contextualize a particular topic, or a controversial or challenging issue, providing ideas or possible new directions. To minimize personal biases and improve balance, Reviews and Perspectives are commissioned to two (or more) co-authors from different institutions. Reviews are approximately 6,000 words in length and Perspectives are approximately 2,800 words. Please, note that the Journal does not accept unsolicited review or perspective manuscripts. Nonetheless, authors and readers are welcome to submit ideas on topics for review to the JBMR® Editorial Office.
Editorials. Editorials can be short articles written by the editors to provide information about the journal and its policies, and for other communications of relevance to the readership. The Editorial format is also used to highlight an article judged of particular impact and relevance published in the same issue of the journal. This type of manuscript has so far been called Commentaries. Editorials are invited by the editors and unsolicited Editorials are rarely published. Authors should not submit Editorials without first contacting the JBMR® Editorial Office.
MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION AND SUBMISSION
Please, carefully follow the guidelines detailed here for preparing the different sections of your manuscript for submission to JBMR®. Manuscripts that do not conform to the JBMR®’s policies or requirements, including manuscript organization, format, figure and image size and quality will be returned to the authors without review. Questions may be addressed to the JBMR® Editorial Office.
COVER LETTER
The cover letter, submitted by the corresponding author, should briefly outline the major findings of the study and their potential significance and impact for future research or clinical practice. The letter should also explicitly state that the manuscript — including all data, figures, tables, and supplementary materials — has not been previously reported or published, and that it has not been, and will not be submitted to another journal while under review by the JBMR®. The letter should also disclose whether data from studies that have been the subject of previous publications are used in the submitted manuscript and provide information on all relevant publications. To facilitate the review process, the authors are asked to indicate potential reviewers in their letter, along with any reviewers to whom they might be opposed.
Reuse of Published Data. The journal will not accept material that has been previously published in peer-reviewed journals. (see policies on duplicate/redundant publications under under Integrity of Published Research). However, it is understood that in some circumstances, new research studies can use source data from databases of large clinical trials, cohort studies or genetic or -omics databases that have been the subject of previous publications. In such cases, manuscripts must avoid overlap in the data reporting and cite all relevant publications. Importantly, the corresponding author must explicitly disclose reuse of such source data and any potential overlap with published material in their cover letter.
Preprint Servers. This journal will consider for review manuscripts previously available as preprints on non-commercial servers such as ArXiv, bioRxiv, medRxiv, psyArXiv, engrXiv, Research Square, etc. If your manuscript appears on a non-commercial preprint server, please indicate this in your cover letter.
FACE PAGE
The Face Page must include the title, names of the authors (in the same order as entered in the on-line submission page) and their major degrees and affiliations. This should be followed by a running title of no more than five words. The address, telephone number, and email address of the corresponding author must also be provided in the face page.
The title is the most important criterion for search engines and PubMed. The title must be concise (aim for no more than 15 words) and should accurately reflect the findings, including the species investigated. Editors reserve the right to edit titles that are not clear and succinct. In order to create a search engine friendly title, we suggest you follow these guidelines:
State the essence of the findings, not just the topic of investigation
Include 1-2 keywords related to your topic
Place your keywords within the first 65 characters of your title
Keep your title short, as a newspaper headline
Consider moving a phrase from your title to the first or second sentence of your abstract
Mention species in which study is conducted
For clinical studies, include the study design
Authors. The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all contributors in the authors’ list meet the authorship criteria detailed here. The name of each individual author listed in the Face Page must be entered in the online manuscript management system during submission, in the same order as shown in the manuscript file. In the case of discrepancy, the electronic record prevails.
JBMR® endorses CRediT, a high-level Contributor Roles Taxonomy including 14 defined types of author contributions suitable for all subject areas. The roles describe each contributor’s specific contribution to the scholarly output. Project CRediT aims to provide more clarity into the role/contribution of each author on a paper.
The corresponding author will be required to select the independent CRediT contributions of each author during online submission. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to ensure that contributions are agreed on by ALL co-authors before manuscript submission.
To improve transparency, JBMR® now requires an ORCiD for the corresponding author of submitted manuscripts. Group of contributors, such as participants to large consortia, cannot be entered as a single author. To register an ORCiD, please click here.
