Submission guidelines

Instructions for Authors

Please check author names and affiliations carefully, as we cannot amend or correct these sections after publication.

Any correction in the authorship after the publication will require an Erratum.

Types of Papers

Genetic Association studies

The Journal of Endocrinological Investigation is interested in publishing genetic association papers in Endocrine and Metabolic disorders that present results that are novel, statistically valid, and that add significantly to the field. We have followed the reporting guidelines outlined in the STREGA (STrengthening the REporting of Genetic Association studies) Statement (cf. below) [1], and the subsequent criteria should be met for any genetic study submitted to the journal.

1)The authors must present a power calculationbased on sample size and minor allele frequency of the included SNP, in order to estimate if the size of the study has the power to detect the association. We suggest authors may consult the "Genetic Power Calculator" [2] as a possible program to perform power and/or sample size calculations for genetic association studies.

2) Test on Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium must be carried out and the p-value reported

3) If multiple SNPs in a single gene are tested, the LD (linkage disequilibrium) structure must be reported

4)Appropriate correction for multiple testing (if multiple independent SNPs are reported) must be included.

5) If the study describes a novel association, a replication study must be included in the submitted manuscript. However, if the first study has already an appropriate sample size and if the results show a strong association, it might not be necessary to provide a replication. Also, if the study population has specific characteristics that make it difficult to find a second cohort, the replication study may not be required.

6) If the submitted study replicates previously published findings, there should be sufficient novelty to add significantly to the literature (for example, extending the observed association to additional intermediate traits or disease groups).

Review ArticlesOverview papers on selected topics. Both Reviews and Short Reviews articles are in general invited by the editors but suggestions by interested individuals may also be considered. Prospective authors should submit a formal and detailed proposal to the Editor, indicating the title and a brief outline of the content.Manuscripts should provide an up-to-date and authoritative review of a topic in any area of experimental and clinical endocrinology, metabolism and andrology.Review Articles should not exceed 7.500 words including an abstract of no more than 250 words, references, tables and figures. Keywords are requested.

Short Review articlesShort Review Articles should not exceed 4.000 words including an abstract of no more than 250 words, references, tables and figures. Keywords are requested.

Original ArticlesAccounts of research or clinical practice that should be based on original rather than confirmatory data. Typically, Original Articles will present new data derived from a sizable series of subjects or patients. Original Articles should not exceed 5.000 words including an abstract of no more than 250 words, references, tables and figures. Keywords are requested.

Rapid CommunicationsRapid Communications are reserved to novel findings that require fast publication, while confirmatory or negative data will not be considered for this kind of publication. They should not exceed 2.000 words, including an abstract of no more than 150 words, 1-2 illustrations and up to 10 references are permitted. Keywords are requested.

Brief ReportsBrief Reports are reserved to concise articles that are primarily based on essentially negative or confirmatory data or are of a relatively minor relevance. They can contain data from original research that editors believe will be interesting to many researchers, and that will likely stimulate further research in the field. They should not exceed 1.000 words, 1-2 illustrations and up to 5 references are permitted. Brief Reports should not have an abstract, keywords are requested.

OpinionsOpinions written by recognized authorities in their own field of research will be published only under direct invitation by the Editorial Board. They should not exceed 1.500 words, 1-2 illustrations and up to 10 references are permitted. Opinions should not have an abstract, keywords are requested.

CommentsComments are short, narrowly focused articles of contemporary interest. They can include a discussion of an article or study that was recently published (including in the Journal of Endocrinological Investigation), and that is interesting enough to warrant further comment or explanation. This type of comment discusses specific issues within a subject area rather than the whole field, explains the implications of the article and puts it in context. A Comment can also be more editorial in nature and covers an aspect of an issue that is relevant to the journal's scope, for example discussion of the impact of new technology on research and treatment. They should not exceed 1.500 words, 1-2 illustrations and up to 10 references are permitted. Opinions should not have an abstract, keywords are requested.

Letter to the EditorPublication of correspondence is at the discretion of the Editorial Board.Brief letters providing pertinent comments on published articles will be considered and the authors concerned will be given a right to reply. Letters raising problems of general interest will also be considered. They must not exceed 500 words, 3 references and 3 authors. They should not have an abstract. No figures or tables are allowed. They should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief. Submitted letters will be subject to shortening and editorial revision.

EditorialsInvited Editorials linked to recent high-quality papers are also published at the discretion of the Editorial Board. They should not exceed 750 words, not include illustrations, and references should be limited to 3.

Endocrinology and artDescriptions of paintings and sculptures showing subjects with identifiable endocrine problems are published occasionally. They should not exceed 200 words, references should be no more than 2."Endocrinology and art" are usually invited, although unsolicited "Endocrinology and art" may be considered for publication.Authors hoping to submit an unsolicited "Endocrinology and art" should first consult the Editors-in-Chief and the section editor at shivani.gore@springernature.com .Proposals should include the paper and a full author list with affiliations and areas of expertise.

Guidelines, position statements, consensus statements on relevant clinical and therapeutic problems are regularly published. They are mostly generated by the Italian Society of Endocrinology, but may be submitted by well established national or international societies. They should not exceed 3500 words, 3-4 illustrations, references should in principle be limited to 50-60. An abstract is not requested.

Clinical Symposia from invited contributors are published occasionally.

Manuscript Submission

The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Please follow the hyperlink “Submit manuscript” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Please ensure you provide all relevant editable source files. Failing to submit these source files might cause unnecessary delays in the review and production process.

Language

The article must be written in standard English.

Journal of Endocrinological Investigation does not copyedit accepted manuscripts, so the language in submitted articles must be clear, correct, and unambiguous. We may reject papers that do not meet these standards.

Hence we strongly encourage authors for whom English is not their native language to seek assistance from a colleague experienced in medical terminology and translation or a technical manuscript editor/service to ensure that the words used both accurately and clearly convey the intended meaning.

English Language Support

For editors and reviewers to accurately assess the work presented in your manuscript you need to ensure the English language is of sufficient quality to be understood. If you need help with writing in English you should consider:

Getting a fast, free online grammar check.

Asking a colleague who is proficient in English to review your manuscript for clarity.

Visiting the English language tutorial which covers the common mistakes when writing in English.

Using a professional language editing service where editors will improve the English to ensure that your meaning is clear and identify problems that require your review. Two such services are provided by our affiliates Nature Research Editing Service and American Journal Experts. Springer authors are entitled to a 10% discount on their first submission to either of these services, simply follow the links below.
