INFORMATION FOR AUTHORS

The Canadian Journal of Urology (CJU) is a peer reviewed bi-monthly journal with an international readership that is indexed and abstracted in Index Medicus/Medline, Current Contents/Clinical Medicine, Science Citation Index Expanded (SciSearch) and Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition.

The CJU publishes articles of interest to the field of urology and related specialties who treat urologic diseases in the following categories:

Original articles. This may include topics such as female urology, male sexual dysfunction and infertility, andrology, infectious diseases, prostate diseases, neurourology, voiding dysfunction, reconstruction, pediatric urology, endourology, urolithiasis, laparoscopic and robotic surgery, history of Urology, new technologies, outcomes research and urologic oncology (surgical, medical, radiation and minimally invasive topics).

Basic and Translational Science articles. These should focus on near term translational findings in the field of urology.

Review Articles. Reviews are accepted for peer review and should follow the format guidelines as outlined below. Authors of review articles are encouraged to contact the Editor-in-Chief to determine if there is a need for such a review, but this is not required. Review articles may also be invited by the Editor-in-Chief.

Editorial Comment and Author Reply. Based on a specific published article.

Resident's Corner. This section is a forum for Trainees to publish their articles. Total number of authors should not exceed 5 authors and a Resident must be the first author. When submitting to the Resident's Corner, the manuscript must be accompanied by a letter from the Residency Program Director and should identify the Resident and their level. Please note that Case Reports are no longer accepted unless it is being submitted to the Resident's Corner section of the journal. The format of the Case Report differs from a standard submission as follows:

1. Total page length must not exceed 10 pages.

2. "Abstract" Narrative form, less than 100 words total with 3-5 key words.

3. "Introduction" Section.

4. "Case Report" Section describing the clinical presentation and management.

5. "Discussion" Section.

6. References limited to less than 10 references.

7. Images should be limited to no more than three high quality photos, imaging studies or photomicrographs.

How I Do It. This section publishes articles describing unique and innovative techniques or devices for Urologists to use. Please contact the journal for the guidelines of this section.

Legends in Urology. This section is only by invitation from the CJU. This section honors those individuals in their own words who have made major contributions to the specialty of urology.

Supplements. Articles for supplements are only by invitation of the Editor in Chief.

Book Reviews. These are published only by invitation of the Editor in Chief.

SUBMISSION PROCESS

Manuscripts are considered with the understanding that neither the article nor any essential portion has been previously published and is not under consideration by any other publication. Accepted manuscripts become the property of the publisher and may not be re-printed elsewhere without the prior written consent of the publisher and author(s). All authors will be required to sign a Copyright Transfer Agreement for each manuscript submitted.

All manuscripts are to be submitted online at www.canjurol.com and then selecting the menu item "Article Submission" at the top of the page.

Review Process

All manuscripts received are subject to peer-review. Authors will receive the reviewers' comments if revisions are required or if the article is determined to be unsuitable for publication. Authors will be advised if their submissions are accepted for publication. Reviewers are assured anonymity throughout the review process.

Conflict of Interest/Disclosure

Authors must disclose any conflict of interest when submitting their articles.

Format

Manuscripts are to be submitted online through the journal's website www.canjurol.com -"Article Submissions"

Manuscripts must include all authors' full names, academic degrees, institutional affiliations and the corresponding author's full address, email address, telephone and fax number.

The manuscript must be submitted in a WORD document.

Please see format for figures below.

Measurements must be in Système International (SI) units. Text should ideally be organized with appropriate headings and sub-headings.

Use the generic name for drug agents OR use the generic name followed by the trade name and name of manufacturer.

Abbreviations should be spelled out in full preceding first use in the text, e.g. human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Papers regarding studies involving human experimentation or information extracted from data bases that contain protected health information (PHI) must indicate that informed consent was obtained and the study was approved by the Institutional Review Board or Ethics Committee.

Length and Content

Title. The main title should be 10 words maximum.

Abstract. A structured abstract between 150 to 250 words must accompany the manuscript and should include Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results and Conclusions.

Key Words (Medline indexing-appropriate terms) within the main text should be listed after the abstract. Do not use references or table/figure legends in the abstract.

Main text. Each submission should be a maximum of 25 typed pages, including abstract, references, tables, etc. The article should be in 12-point font, double-spaced with one-inch margins. All pages must be numbered consecutively with a running heading of no more than 15 characters.

References

In listed references, the names of all the authors should be given unless there are more than 6, in which case the names of the first 3 authors are used, followed by et al.

Journal papers:

Author(s). Title. Journal title as abbreviated in Medicus/MEDLINE: Year; Volume no. (Issue no.): pages. Ex: Klausner AP, Anderson BB, Espy PG, Despradel VM, Grob BM. Long term prostate-specific antigen trends following subcapsular prostatectomy. Can J Urol 2010;17(6):5442-5446.

Books:

Author(s). Book section. Book title. Editors. City of publication: Publisher; Year: pages. Ex: Krebs HA: Renal glucogenesis. In: Advances in Enzyme Regulation. London: Pergamon Press; 1963:385.

Web References:

References to articles in press or e-published on line:

State the authors, title, journal name and in press year or date of e-publication.

Personal Communications:

These should be limited and only used when absolutely necessary. Do not include these in the reference list but note in the text. Written confirmation from the source may be required if the article is accepted for publication.

Figures and Illustrations

Each figure must be numbered and cited in the text. Figure legends must accompany all submitted illustrations (max. 40 words). Figures should be submitted as high resolution 300 dpi graphic files. Black and white images are suggested; color images are subject to additional charges if the article is published. The following formats are acceptable: Adobe Photoshop PSD files (any version), EPS, TIFF and JPEG. If saving as JPEG, please use the Maximum Quality setting in the JPEG options. Signed release/permission forms must be provided to reproduce previously published material. Submission of photographs is encouraged. Magnification and stain should be provided for photomicrographs. Signed consent forms must accompany recognizable photographs of patients.

Tables

Tables must supplement, not duplicate, information in the text and be self-explanatory. Each table should have a title (max. 5 words).

Acknowledgements

All forms of support, including pharmaceutical companies and other institutional or corporate affiliations, must be acknowledged. Grant support must be acknowledged in a separate paragraph and should include the name of the granting agency and the grant number. Acknowledgment of individuals involved with the scientific study should not be more than 3-4 typed lines.

Video

When submitting a video to accompany your article, please note that the CJU will not edit the video. A figure should be provided for the printed version of the article and the video will be archived on the CJU website. A narrative video is required. Length of the video should be a maximum of 8 minutes. Videos files should be supplied in .AVI, .MOV, .WMV .MPEG or .MP4 formats.
