Instructions for Authors
Journal of World Languages welcomes submissions of two types: Research Articles and Book reviews. All submissions must be original, neither submitted nor published elsewhere. A Research Article should be no less than 8,000 words. Review of a newly-published monograph or collection should normally be between 2,500 and 5,000 words in length.
1. Submission
Journal of World Languages uses an electronic editorial management system (available at https://www.editorialmanager.com/rwol). Authors are required to create an account and log in to enable them to submit their manuscripts electronically. Instructions on how to submit a paper are available once an author has logged in. The editorial management system permits authors to monitor the progress of their manuscripts.
Language and spelling: Submissions should be in English with American spelling and pages should be numbered. Contributors whose native language is not English should have their manuscripts carefully checked by a qualified native speaker (preferably a linguist familiar with the discourse of our discipline) before submission. Manuscripts that do not meet the standards of international publishing in terms of editorial quality will be rejected without reviewing.
Submitted files: The preferred format for your manuscript is Word.doc or Word.docx. If your manuscript contains special characters/figures, you are suggested to submit also a PDF version. Please check the converted PDF before submitting it to the journal. If applicable, make sure that all special characters (e.g. phonetic transcription or non-Latin alphabet) are converted properly.
Anonymization of submission: Journal of World Languages operates a double-blind peer review process. To facilitate this, authors are required to submit: (1) A version of the manuscript which has had any information that compromises the anonymity of the author(s) removed or anonymized. This version will be sent to the peer reviewers; (2) A version of the manuscript with a separate title page containing: 1) the title of the submitted manuscript, 2) authors’ names, 3) affiliations and their complete address information (the full postal address of each affiliation and the e-mail address of each author), and 4) corresponding author. The separate title page should also contain 5) Highlights, 6) Funding (if any) and 7) Acknowledgments (if any).
Note: Highlights are three to five bullet points (maximum 85 characters, including spaces) that help increase the discoverability of your article via search engines. These bullet points capture the novel results of your research as well as new methods that were used during the study. Think of them as the “elevator pitch” of your article. Don’t try to capture all ideas, concepts or conclusions as highlights.
Formatting and references: Authors are advised to adhere as closely as possible to the De Gruyter Mouton journal style sheet, especially regarding the form of Figures, Tables, Citations, and the References. For glossed Examples, authors should follow the Leipzig Glossing Rules. Authors should make sure to list all works in the references that have been cited in the text, and only those works. Manuscripts of articles and reviews must be prepared in accordance with the style sheet. Manuscripts not conforming with the style sheet will not be considered.
2. Peer Review
All submitted manuscripts will be first reviewed by the editors of Journal of World Languages to ensure thematic fit and sufficient quality. If a manuscript is considered appropriate for review, it will be sent out to a minimum of two reviewers. Usually, authors will receive an editorial decision within three months after submission. The review process is double blind: Reviewers are not disclosed to authors, and authors are not disclosed to reviewers.
3. Production Stage
Formatting of accepted manuscripts: Upon acceptance, the source files (e.g. Word) must be submitted along with a PDF file. Authors should be prepared to provide any special fonts (in TTF format) if necessary. Manuscripts should be free of Endnote and other similar coding. It is the author’s responsibility to ensure that the final version of their paper fully conforms to De Gruyter Mouton journal style sheet. Papers that have been accepted for publication but which still do not conform will be returned to the authors for revision before further processing.
Permissions for copyrighted material: Authors must obtain permission for any copyrighted material used in the submission.
Proofs: After final acceptance, authors will receive PDF page proofs for correction, which must be returned by dates given in the publication schedule.
Offprints: Upon publication, authors will receive electronic access to their contributions. Guest editors of special issues will receive complimentary print copies of the issue.
