Instructions for Authors
Submission
Authors should submit manuscripts by e-mail to the Managing Editor, Dr. Harriet Zurndorfer at:
h.t.zurndorfer@hum.leidenuniv.nl.
Format
The entire text, including the abstract, notes, references, tables, extracts, and quotations must be double spaced, and saved in a single file.
To assure anonymity, there should be no references to the author anywhere in the text or the notes.
Please include a separate file to serve as the ‘cover sheet’ with the manuscript title, author’s name, professional affiliation, complete mailing address, e-mail address, and telephone number.
Language
Manuscripts should be written in English. Spelling (British or American) should be consistent throughout.
Submission Requirements
Transliteration
Authors should italicize the names of books and journals, and the transliteration of Chinese/Japanese words (and thus, NOT underline nor use bold). Characters should NOT be in simplified form.
Archaic (or non-standard) Chinese characters should be supplied by the author in camera-ready form(minimum 600 dpi printout).
Non-Roman Scripts
Authors are requested to utilize the Hanyu pinyin Romanization system for Chinese (please remember that this system does not use hyphenation) and the Hepburn system for Japanese.
At first mention, Romanization of Chinese or Japanese terms in italics should be followed by the appropriate characters and, in parentheses, the English translation. Neither characters nor translations need be supplied for well-known titles or terms with which the Nan Nü reader would be expected to be familiar, or for the names of Asian publishers.
Figures
Authors are welcome to make use of black and white photos, maps, and other graphics to illustrate their articles.
Figures should be submitted as separate source files in .eps, .tif, or .jpg format, in a size suitable for the
typesetting area of the journal. The resolution of these files should be at least 300 dpi for half-tone figures, and 600 dpi for line drawings. Number the files, and indicate in the manuscript where they are to appear (Fig. 1 here).
The text in a figure must be legible, and should not be smaller than corps 7. The size of this lettering for any text in a figure should be the same for all figures in the manuscript.
Endnotes
When citing materials, authors are requested to adhere as much as possible to the following models.
