About the Journal

Journal of Hydraulic Research is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing high-quality, original research. Please see the journal's Aims & Scope for information about its focus and peer-review policy.

Please note that this journal only publishes manuscripts in English.

Journal of Hydraulic Research accepts the following types of article:

State-of-the-art papers

Research papers

Technical notes

Educational and Forum papers

Case studies

Discussions

Journal of Hydraulic Research considers all manuscripts on the strict condition that:

the manuscript is your own original work, and does not duplicate any other previously published work, including your own previously published work

the manuscript has been submitted only to  Journal of Hydraulic Research; it is not under consideration or peer review or accepted for publication or in press or published elsewhere

the manuscript contains nothing that is abusive, defamatory, libellous, obscene, fraudulent, or illegal.

Any author who fails to adhere to the above conditions will be charged with costs which  Journal of Hydraulic Research incurs for their manuscript at the discretion of  Journal of Hydraulic Research’s Editor and Taylor & Francis, and their manuscript will be rejected.

This journal is compliant with the Research Councils UK OA policy. Please see the licence options and embargo periods  here.

Open Access

You have the option to publish open access in this journal via our Open Select publishing program. Publishing open access means that your article will be free to access online immediately on publication, increasing the visibility, readership and impact of your research. Articles published Open Select with Taylor & Francis typically receive 95% more citations* and over 7 times as many downloads** compared to those that are not published Open Select.

Your research funder or your institution may require you to publish your article open access. Visit our Author Services website to find out more about open access policies and how you can comply with these.

You will be asked to pay an article publishing charge (APC) to make your article open access and this cost can often be covered by your institution or funder. Use our APC finder to view the APC for this journal.

Please visit our Author Services website if you would like more information about our Open Select Program.

Preparing Your Paper

Article Types

State-of-the-art papers

Should be written with the following elements in the following order: Paper Title; Authors names and their affiliations; Running head; Abstract; Keywords; Main text (appropriately structured); Acknowledgments; Funding; Supplemental data; Appendices (if relevant); Notation; and References. Table(s) with caption(s) and Figures with caption(s) should be included at the end of the main text, below the References.

Should contain an unstructured abstract of 150 words.

Should contain between 5 and 7 keywords. Read making your article more discoverable, including information on choosing a title and search engine optimization.

State-of-the-art papers assess and review particular areas of hydraulic and hydro-environment research and highlight important issues of general interest. Some papers of this type are directly solicited by the Editor and prepared by world-leading authorities in particular areas of hydraulics and fluid mechanics. These solicited ‘vision’ papers discuss key challenges to address in the next decade, emergence of new areas, and developments at the interfaces with other disciplines.

The following maximum length limits are applied for a free-of-charge publication: 8 printed pages (10 pages for IAHR members).

Longer papers may be accepted as an exception only and are subject to an excess page charge of  €100 per page. The length restrictions and excess page charge may be waived by the Editor for the solicited papers. Authors should include a total word-equivalent count (including text, figures, and tables) at a submission stage as an answer to a custom question. Note that one printed JHR page includes, approximately, 1000 word-equivalents. The total word-equivalent count is equal to the sum of (1) number of words; and (2) number of words that would fill the journal space occupied by the appropriately-scaled figures and tables.

Research papers report original results of theoretical, experimental, and numerical modelling studies, particularly those employing new conceptual approaches, unconventional data analyses, novel experimental methodologies, and uncharted application areas. All topics corresponding to the JHR remits will be considered.
