Information For Authors
Submitting Your Manuscript
Target Audience and Scope
The target audience for Foodborne Pathogens and Disease is the medical, veterinary, agricultural and research communities. The Journal will bridge the gap between these diverse groups. The scope of Foodborne Pathogens and Disease is comprehensive and includes topics such as: emerging foodborne pathogens; health problems/disease caused by foodborne pathogens; emergence of drug resistance in foodborne pathogens; methods and technology for rapid and accurate detection of foodborne pathogens; strategies to destroy or control foodborne pathogens in food production and processing environments; development of novel strategies for the prevention and control of plant and animal diseases that impact food safety; and dissemination of innovative foodborne pathogen/food safety educational materials. Several of the articles/topics will likely have political appeal as well. Foodborne Pathogens and Disease is a monthly peer-reviewed international journal that publishes original research articles and short communications on important new information on foodborne pathogens research and diseases caused by foodborne pathogens.
Foodborne Pathogens and Disease invites scientists from all countries to submit manuscripts to the Journal. Timely review articles and special reports on topics such as agroterrorism, food allergies, and the safety of organically grown and genetically modified foods are also within the Journal’s purview. The Editor-in-Chief will invite authors to write review articles.
Foodborne Pathogens and Disease carries a manuscript submission fee* of $49.00 USD upon submission of each new manuscript. Upon payment, you will be provided with a Manuscript Submission Code, and will be prompted to enter this information when uploading your files to our peer-review system. Please note: Securing a token does not automatically create an account in our peer-review system. If you do not already have an account, you will be asked to create one before you can begin your submission.
Submissions do not need to be completed at once. Submitting authors/agents may begin the submission process, save their work, and return to the site to complete the upload(s) at a later time. There is no limit on the number of times one can save their work and subsequently resume the submission. Doing so will not incur additional charges.
*The manuscript processing charge is independent of editorial decision and is non-refundable.
ORCID IDs
The submitting author is required to complete the submission using an ORCID identifier. Please visit the ORCID website for more information, or to register. You must have an account in ScholarOne before logging in with an ORCID identifier.

Create an Effective Title
Manuscript titles should be brief, contain key terms, and clearly identify the purpose of the work conducted
Manuscript titles should not exceed 15 -18 words. Exceptions can be made with the Editor’s approval
Manuscript titles should be direct and to the point. Remember that the journal has a global readership, so clear and concise non-vernacular language is most effective
Avoid the use of specific locations in the title

All file names should be in English and contain only alphanumeric characters. Do not include spaces, symbols, special characters, dashes, dots, or underscores. Label each file with the first author's last name, followed by the content of the file (i.e.: SmithText; SmithTables; SmithFigureLegends; SmithFig1, etc.)
Important: Please upload individual files of all manuscript material as described herein — please do NOT upload a combined PDF file containing all material in your submission.
Preparation of Manuscript
Prepare text of manuscripts, figure legends, and tables in Microsoft Word, double spaced. The order of elements in each manuscript should be:

Supplemental Information (if applicable); NOTE: Supplemental Information will not be copyedited or typeset; it will be posted online as supplied.)
Manuscript Text
Maximum word count for original articles should not exceed 3,000 words. In general, the text should be organized under the headings: Introduction (questions, objectives, reasons for research, and related literature), Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, and Conclusions. Use only standard abbreviations, which can be found in the AMA’s Manual of Style for Authors & Editors or the Council of Biology Editors Style Manual, 10/e. At first usage, spell out terms and provide abbreviations in parentheses. Thereafter, use only the abbreviations. It is not necessary to spell out standard units of measure. Use generic names for drugs if possible. If you wish to use a proprietary drug name the first time it appears, use the generic name followed by the proprietary name, manufacturer, and location in parentheses. If proprietary names must be used, include trademark information. Scientific names for species must appear with genus spelled in full on the first occurrence and abbreviated thereafter. Family names should appear on first occurrence of uncommon species. All microorganisms must be named by genus and species in accordance with the latest edition of Bergey’s Manual of Determinative Bacteriology, Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 9th ed., 1994.
Bacteriology
The name of the genus must appear in full the first time that the microorganism is cited in the abstract, in the body of the article, and in each table and figure legend. Thereafter, the genus can be abbreviated by its first initial unless it will be confused with other microorganisms cited in the manuscript, in which case each genus should be abbreviated to use enough letters to avoid confusion. The names of all microorganisms should be in italics. Specific strain designations and numbers should be used when appropriate. Viruses are to be given the classification and names recommended by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.
References
The references should be cited in the text using the name/date method [e.g., Keerthirathne et al. (2017)]. The reference list at the end of the manuscript should be organized alphabetically by name and year. Include the reference section as part of the main text file, not as a separate file. Use journal abbreviations as provided by PubMed/Medline. Provide the names of all authors for each reference. If references to personal communications or unpublished data are used, they are not to be in the list of references. They should be referred to in the text in parentheses: (AB Jones, personal communication). Include written permission from authors to cite unpublished data or articles still in press. Include among the references any articles that have been accepted but have not yet published; identify the name of publication and add "In Press." If the reference has been published online, provide the DOI number in place of the page range.
Sample style for references:

Figure Legends
Figure legends should be uploaded as a separate Word file and double spaced. In the legend, provide explanations for any abbreviations, arrows, etc. that appear in the figure. If the illustration is taken from a copyrighted publication, permission must be secured, appropriate credit must be given in the legend, and a corresponding reference must appear in the reference section.
Tables
All tables should be prepared in one single Word file. Provide a title for each table. Cite tables in sequence in the text. Explain abbreviations used in the body of the table in footnotes. Details of experimental conditions should be included in the table footnotes. If the table is taken from a copyrighted publication, permission must be secured, appropriate credit must be given in the legend, and a corresponding reference must appear in the reference section.
Figures
Submission of high resolution .TIFF or .EPS figure files is strongly recommended.
Figures should not be embedded within the manuscript file.
Cite figures consecutively in text within parentheses.
A legend should be supplied for each figure and all legends numbered consecutively.
Images should not show the name of a patient or a manufacturer.
Do not include any illustrations as part of your text file.
The submission of color figures is welcomed, but the author must pay a subsidy for color publication.
Correspondence Address
Following the references, provide the name and complete affiliation, mailing and/or street address, telephone and fax numbers, and institutional email address of the person to whom correspondence should be sent.
Manuscript Revisions
Processing charges and submission codes are NOT required for revisions to previously submitted manuscripts. To upload a revision of a manuscript, the submitting author should log in to their Author Center and click on “Revised Manuscripts in Draft.” All revised submissions will be required to meet all formatting conditions described herein. Submissions that do not satisfy these requirements will be un-submitted and returned to the submitting author for proper configuration.
Letters to the Editor
Foodborne Pathogens and Disease will consider Letters to the Editor commenting on the scientific content of an article published in the Journal. Letters should not exceed 500 words of text and 5 references. Letters submitted for publication must be original and must not be submitted to any other publication simultaneously.
