Author Guidelines
1. SUBMISSION
Authors should kindly note that submission implies that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in the proceedings of a scientific meeting or symposium.
Once the submission materials have been prepared in accordance with the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted online at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/faf.
The submission system will prompt authors to use an ORCID iD (a unique author identifier) to help distinguish their work from that of other researchers. Click here to find out more.

2. AIMS AND SCOPE
Fish and Fisheries adopts a broad, interdisciplinary approach to the subject of fish biology and fisheries. It draws contributions in the form of major synoptic papers and syntheses or meta-analyses that lay out new approaches, re-examine existing findings, methods or theory, and critically discuss papers and commentaries from diverse areas. Focal areas include fish palaeontology, molecular biology and ecology, genetics, biochemistry, physiology, ecology, behaviour, evolutionary studies, conservation, assessment, population dynamics, mathematical modelling, ecosystem analysis and the social, economic and policy aspects of fisheries where they are grounded in a scientific approach. A paper in Fish and Fisheries must draw upon all key elements of the existing literature on a topic, normally have a broad geographic and/or taxonomic scope, and provide points of generic value, which make it compelling to a wide range of readers whatever their geographical location. So, in short, we aim to publish articles that make syntheses of old or synoptic, long-term or spatially widespread data, introduce or consolidate fresh concepts or theory, or, in the Ghoti section, briefly justify preliminary, new synoptic ideas. Please note that authors of submissions not meeting this mandate will be directed to the appropriate primary literature.
3. MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Contributions should not ordinarily exceed 40 double spaced pages (8,000 words in total). We are happy to consider longer articles, but shorter articles are easier to schedule and will ordinarily be published faster.
'Ghoti' forum contributions
'Ghoti' is a forum section for publishing stimulating commentary and opinion. (The name derives from George Bernard Shaw's joke spelling of 'fish' - 'gh' as in 'rough', 'o' as in 'women' and 'ti' as in 'palatial'.)
Ghoti articles are generally shorter than regular submissions and will be selected, edited and subject to the normal peer review.
Book reviews and conference reports
Book reviews are commissioned by Paul Hart, to whom books for review should be sent. If you are interested in writing a conference report, please contact Tony Pitcher.
4. PREPARING THE SUBMISSION

Cover Letters
Cover letters are required and should outline the author’s main rationale for submission.
Parts of the Manuscript
The manuscript should be submitted in separate files: a main text file (including title page); and figures.
Main documents will not be accepted in PDF format unless prepared in LaTex.
Title Page
The title page should be included at the start of the Main Text File:
i. A short informative title containing the major key words, with two alternatives. The title should not contain abbreviations (see Wiley's best practice SEO tips);
ii. A short running title of less than 40 characters;
iii. The full names of the authors;
iv. The name, address and e-mail contact of the author to whom all correspondence and proofs should be sent;
v. The author's institutional affiliations.
The present address of any author, if different from where the work was carried out, should be supplied in a footnote.
Authorship
Please refer to the journal’s Authorship policy in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section for details on author listing eligibility. See also the Vancouver authorship rules.
Conflict of Interest Statement
Authors will be asked to provide a conflict of interest statement during the submission process. For details on what to include in this section, see the ‘Conflict of Interest’ section in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section below. Authors should ensure they liaise with all co-authors to confirm agreement with the final statement.
Main Text File
The main text file should be presented in the following order:
i. Abstract
ii. Table of contents, only applicable to original articles (not including Ghoti articles), with page numbers omitted;
iii. Main text (including line numbers);
iv. Acknowledgements;
v. Data Availability Statement
vi. References;
vii. Tables (each table complete with title and footnotes);
viii. Figure legends;
Figures and supporting information should be supplied as separate files.
Abstract
Please provide an abstract of no more than 250 words containing the major keywords.
Keywords
Please provide six keywords arranged in alphabetical order. These keywords should not include words in the title.
Main Text
The journal uses British spelling; however, authors may submit using either option, as spelling of accepted papers is converted during the production process.
Footnotes to the text are not allowed and any such material should be incorporated into the text as parenthetical matter.
Acknowledgements
Contributions from anyone who does not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed, with permission from the contributor, in an Acknowledgements section. Financial and material support should also be mentioned.
Data Availability Statement
Authors are required to provide a data availability statement to describe the availability or the absence of shared data. When data have been shared, authors are required to include in their data availability statement a link to the repository they have used, and to cite the data they have shared.
References
References should be prepared according to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition). This means in text citations should follow the author-date method whereby the author's last name and the year of publication for the source should appear in the text, for example, (Jones, 1998). The complete reference list should appear alphabetically by name at the end of the paper.
A sample of the most common entries in reference lists appears below. Please note that a DOI should be provided for all references where available. For more information about APA referencing style, please refer to the APA FAQ. Please note that for journal articles, issue numbers are not included unless each issue in the volume begins with page one.

Tables
Tables should be self-contained and complement, not duplicate, information contained in the text. They should be supplied as editable files, not pasted as images. Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the table, legend, and footnotes must be understandable without reference to the text. All abbreviations must be defined in footnotes. Footnote symbols: †, ‡, §, ¶, should be used (in that order) and *, **, *** should be reserved for P-values. Statistical measures such as SD or SEM should be identified in the headings.
Figure Legends
Legends should be concise but comprehensive – the figure and its legend must be understandable without reference to the text. Include definitions of any symbols used and define/explain all abbreviations and units of measurement.
Figures
It is important that figures are supplied in accepted file formats and meet basic resolution requirements. Click here for the basic figure requirements for figures submitted with manuscripts for initial peer review, as well as the more detailed post-acceptance figure requirements.
Figures submitted in colour may be reproduced in colour online free of charge. Please note, however, that it is preferable that line figures (e.g. graphs and charts) are supplied in black and white so that they are legible if printed by a reader in black and white. If an author would prefer to have figures printed in colour in hard copies of the journal, a fee will be charged by the Publisher.

Supporting Information / Supplementary Information
Supporting information is information that is not essential to the article, but provides greater depth and background. It is hosted online and appears without editing or typesetting. It may include tables, figures, videos, datasets, etc. Click here for Wiley’s FAQs on supporting information.
Note: if data, scripts, or other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper are available via a publicly available data repository, authors should include a reference to the location of the material within their paper.
General Style Points
The following points provide general advice on formatting and style.
Species Names: upon its first use in the title, abstract, and text, the common name of a species should be followed by the scientific name (genus, species, and family name) in parentheses e.g. Atlantic cod (Gadus morhua, Gadidae). For well-known species, however, scientific names may be omitted from article titles. If no common name exists in English, only the scientific name should be used.
Acronyms and Abbreviations: In general, terms should not be abbreviated unless they are used repeatedly and the abbreviation is helpful to the reader. Initially, use the word in full, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter use the abbreviation only.
Units of measurement: Measurements should be given in SI or SI-derived units. Visit the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM) website at www.bipm.fr for more information about SI units.
Numbers: numbers under 10 are spelt out, except for: measurements with a unit (8mmol/l); age (6 weeks old), or lists with other numbers (11 dogs, 9 cats, 4 gerbils).
Trade Names: Chemical substances should be referred to by the generic name only. Trade names should not be used. Drugs should be referred to by their generic names.

5. EDITORIAL POLICIES AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Editorial Review and Acceptance
The acceptance criteria for all papers are the quality and originality of the research and its significance to journal readership. Papers will only be sent to review if the Editors determine that the paper fits with the aims and objectives of the journal.

Data Storage and Documentation
Fish and Fisheries expects that data supporting the results in the paper will be archived in an appropriate public repository. Authors are required to provide a data availability statement to describe the availability or the absence of shared data. When data have been shared, authors are required to include in their data availability statement a link to the repository they have used, and to cite the data they have shared. Whenever possible the scripts and other artefacts used to generate the analyses presented in the paper should also be publicly archived. If sharing data compromises ethical standards or legal requirements then authors are not expected to share it.
Preprint
Fish and Fisheries will consider for review articles previously available as preprints on non-commercial servers. Authors may also post the submitted version of a manuscript to non-commercial servers at any time. Authors are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article.
Adherence to Ethical Guidelines
All studies derived from human or animal studies should adhere to the appropriate ethical guidelines obtained from the home institution or government.
