SCOPE
Diseases of the Colon & Rectum is the Journal of The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. The mission of the Journal is to advance knowledge of disorders of the small intestine, colon, rectum, and anus. It publishes original articles, review papers, editorials, practice parameters, and letters to the editor. Major areas of interest include colorectal and anal cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, benign colonic conditions, anorectal disorders, and pelvic floor disorders. The Journal's main focus is on surgical issues, though other material directly related to these topics is also published. All submitted material is subject to a peer-review process.

FORMS REQUIRED WITH SUBMISSION
Copyright Transfer Statement:
Each author must complete the Journal's copyright transfer agreement. A copy of the form is made available to the submitting author within the Editorial Manager submission process. Co-authors will automatically receive an Email with instructions on completing the form upon submission.
Disclosure Statement:
Conflicts of interest: Authors must state all possible conflicts of interest in the manuscript, including financial, consultant, institutional and other relationships that might lead to bias or a conflict of interest. If there is no conflict of interest, this should also be explicitly stated as none declared. All sources of funding should be acknowledged in the manuscript. All relevant conflicts of interest and sources of funding should be included on the title page of the manuscript with the heading “Conflicts of Interest and Source of Funding:”. For example:
Conflicts of Interest and Source of Funding: A has received honoraria from Company Z. B is currently receiving a grant (#12345) from Organization Y, and is on the speaker’s bureau for Organization X – the CME organizers for Company A. For the remaining authors none were declared.
Each author must complete and submit the journal's copyright transfer agreement, which includes a section on the disclosure of potential conflicts of interest based on the recommendations of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors, "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" (www.icmje.org/update.html).
A copy of the form is made available to the submitting author within the Editorial Manager submission process. Co-authors will automatically receive an Email with instructions on completing the form upon submission.
Open access process
While the submission and review process follows the traditional process, there are additional forms and steps that need to be taken to publish your work as open access. If authors of accepted manuscripts wish to continue with OPEN ACCESS, you will need to complete a License to Publish (LTP) form and make a payment for the article through qconnect: http://wolterskluwer.qconnect.com. To complete an LTP form and make a payment for the article through qconnect, follow these steps:
Step 1: LTP (required). Wolters Kluwer's License to Publish (LTP) form must be completed, in full, by the corresponding author on behalf of all the authors before an article can be made OPEN ACCESS. This form may be uploaded with the manuscript, which routes it to the publisher for the first step in the paperwork. Go here for the form: https://download.lww.com/wolterskluwer_vitalstream_com/PermaLink/LWW-ES/A/LWW-ES_2017_03_27_LTP_1_SDC1.pdf
Step 2: Payment (required). Payment for OPEN ACCESS is the last step. First-time authors will have to create an account/log in. Please note: this account is separate from any other accounts you may have for the Journal. You will be asked for the following information. Please enter exactly as shown:
- Article Title - %ARTICLE_TITLE%
- Manuscript Number - %MS_NUMBER%

MANUSCRIPT SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
NEW The Diseases of the Colon & Rectum is pleased to offer authors a free rapid manuscript checking tool. Penelope.ai is an online tool that automatically checks manuscripts. It helps authors double check that their work meets journal requirements before submitting. The tool is free, fast, and may help spot mistakes that could otherwise delay a submission. Link: https://app.penelope.ai/manuscript-check/q/dcr Manuscripts may also be submitted on-line through the web site at https://www.editorialmanager.com/dcr/.
First-time users: Please click the Register button from the menu above and enter the requested information. On successful registration, you will be sent an e-mail indicating your user name and password. Once you have an assigned ID and password, you do not have to re-register, even if your status changes (that is, author, reviewer, or editor). NOTE: If you have received an e-mail from us with an assigned user ID and password, or if you are a repeat user, do not register again. Just log in.
Authors: Please click the log-in button from the menu at the top of the page and log in to the system as an Author. Submit your manuscript according to the author instructions. You will be able to track the progress of your manuscript through the system. If you experience any problems, please contact tarisashton@gmail.com or dcrjournalmanagingeditor@gmail.com.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
System requirements can be found at http://www.editorialmanager.com/homepage/faq.html#faq11
AUTHORSHIP
DCR uses the CRediT taxonomy to define author contributions and requires that the independent contributions of each author be provided during online submission. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to ensure that contributions are agreed on by ALL co-authors prior to manuscript submission. DCR also requires that the corresponding author provide an ORCID ID at online submission. The registration process is quick and simple. Please go here to register if you do not have an ORCID ID https://orcid.org/. See video from Editor-in-Chief Susan Galandiuk on "Surnames and ORCID ID" at https://journals.lww.com/dcrjournal/pages/videogallery.aspx?videoId=45&autoPlay=true.
The Diseases of the Colon and Rectum considers group or collaborative authorship. Authors are asked to comply with the instructions below when considering such a submission. The corresponding author may choose one of the following options.
Option 1. The corresponding author may choose to list all members of the group collaborative to be authors. If this option is chosen, then all should meet the four criteria for authors and all must sign the copyright form. They will also be expected as individuals to complete conflict-of-interest disclosure forms.
Option 2. The corresponding author of a group collaborative submission has the option to specify lead "writing" authors who take public responsibility for the work and should have full confidence in the accuracy and integrity of the work on behalf of the collaborative. These lead authors are listed as authors on the title page of the manuscript. These authors must sign copyright forms and meet authorship criteria. The corresponding author must also specify on the title page the group name of the collaborative. The phrasing may be: "On behalf of ___ Collaborative." Members of the group collaborative who are not lead authors are to be listed by full name in alphabetic order in the Acknowledgment section of the manuscript. All names provided will then appear in PubMed as "Collaborators." See the example in the publication Dis Colon Rectum 2019;62:794-801.
Our policy regarding group authorship is based upon the "Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals" statement of the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors at http://www.icmje.org/recommendations/browse/roles-and-responsibilities/defining-the-role-of-authors-and-contributors.html. ICMJE policy states: "When a large multi-author group has conducted the work, the group ideally should decide who will be an author before the work is started and confirm who is an author before submitting the manuscript for publication." This is in compliance with the ICMJE policy: "All members of the group named as authors should meet all four criteria for authorship, including approval of the final manuscript, and they should be able to take public responsibility for the work and should have full confidence in the accuracy and integrity of the work of other group authors."
ARTICLE TYPES
ORIGINAL CONTRIBUTIONS:
This category includes original research including both clinical and basic science submissions. The work must be original and neither published, accepted, or submitted for publication elsewhere. Any related work, either SUBMITTED, in press, or published from any of the authors should be clearly cited and referenced.
All clinical trials must be registered in a public trials registry that is acceptable to the International Committee of Medical Journals Editors (ICMJE). Go to (http://www.icmje.org/faq.html). Authors of randomized controlled trials must adhere to the CONSORT guidelines, available at: www.consort-statement.org, and provide both a CONSORT checklist and flow diagram. We require that you choose the MS Word template at www.consort-statement.org for the flow chart and cite/upload it in the manuscript as a figure. In addition, submitted manuscripts must include the unique registration number in the Abstract as evidence of registration.
All authors are expected to abide by accepted ethical standards for human and animal investigation. In studies that involve human subjects or laboratory animals, authors must provide an explicit statement in Materials and Methods that the experimental protocol was approved by the appropriate institutional review committee and meets the guidelines of their responsible governmental agency. In the case of human subjects, informed consent, in addition to institutional review board approval, is required.
The Journal will consider and occasionally publishes ANIMAL STUDIES. However, as our focus is on clinical aspects of colorectal disease, these papers are of low priority and are generally limited to those that provide particular biological insight or have direct and usually near-term therapeutic implications. In studies that involve laboratory animals authors must adhere to the ARRIVE guidelines and provide an ARRIVE checklist. Cite and upload same in the manuscript as a figure. We refer you to the following links:
Article - http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3043335/
Guidelines with link to Checklist: http://www.nc3rs.org.uk/ARRIVE
Only a limited number of BASIC SCIENCE PAPERS are considered for publication. These are selected at the discretion of the editor(s) based upon novelty, relevance, and the quality of the research.
Original contributions comprising survey data of surgeon practice and attitudes are considered to be of low publication priority and their submission is discouraged. Our Journal does not publish results of surveys.
