Structural mechanics research group at the Faculty of Built Environment is led by Prof. Reijo Kouhia. The research themes cover broadly many areas of applied mechanics, especially materials and fatigue modelling. In addition development of numerical methods to solve these problems is a part of our research themes.
Tribology and Machine Elements group at the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences is led by Prof. Arto Lehtovaara and is part of the Unit of Materials Science and Environmental Engineering. Our research group concentrates on dry and lubricated contacts (friction, wear and lubrication), performance and service life of machine elements as well as monitoring and diagnostics of machine systems. Research is mainly focusing on components of mechanical power transmissions, such as frictional joints (fretting).
Job description
We are looking for a doctoral researcher for working in the extensive EU-funded project ENGINE to develop a multiscale time-continuous evolution equation based fatigue model for plain- and fretting fatigue. The researcher is positioned in the Structural Mechanics -research group, but is working in close collaboration with researchers in the Tribology and Machine Elements group as well as the other researchers in the ENGINE-consortium.
Requirements
You need to have a master’s degree in an applicable field and have demonstrated (during your studies towards the master’s degree or otherwise) the competence and motivation to pursue postgraduate studies.
High motivation to the topic of engineering mechanics and relevant studies are required. The applicant should be able to communicate and collaborate with the members of the research group and related third parties.
Successful candidates must be pursuing or will be accepted to study towards a doctoral degree in the doctoral programme of the discipline. Please visit the admissions webpage for more information on eligibility requirements.

The positions will be filled for a fixed-term period ending on 31st of May, 2025. The starting date is negotiable but we hope to fill the position as soon as possible. The position is located at the Tampere University Hervanta Campus.
The salary will be based on both the job requirements and the employee's personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System. According to the criteria applied to teaching and research staff, the position of a doctoral researcher is placed on level 2-4 of the job requirements scale. In addition to the basic salary, supplementary salary will be paid according to the personal performance, depending on the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. A trial period of six months applies to all our new employees.
