JOURNAL OF THE TORREY BOTANICAL SOCIETY
I. Manuscript Submission, Reviewing, and Processing
The Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society is published in two peer-reviewed sections. The first consists of original research papers of five or more printed pages (2.5 double-spaced typed pages = ca. 1 printed page). The second part, TORREYA (once a separate journal), contains original research papers of less than five printed pages, on topics related to local floristics, distribution, conservation, and environmental concerns; field trip reports; and obituaries. Announcements and book reviews are included irregularly.
A. Submission to the Journal
Publication in the Journal is not restricted to members of the Society; submission is open to all contributors. However, we encourage you to enjoy the benefits of membership in the Torrey Botanical Society. There are no page charges except for printed color plates (see below) and Open Access, which is available for $25 per page for a limited number of articles. Please contact the Editor-in-Chief (EIC) for more information.
All manuscripts must be submitted through the PeerTrackTM submission and peer review management system.
Detailed instructions for manuscript style are provided below. Submissions not in the style and format of the journal, sloppily prepared, or not consistent with the goals of the journal, will be summarily returned to the authors without review.

C. Peer Review Process
Manuscripts will be examined by at least two referees and returned to the assigned Associate Editor. The Associate Editor will in turn provide a third independent review and provide additional comments to the EIC, who will then make recommendations to the authors regarding revision or rejection. The decision to accept or decline a manuscript is the sole responsibility of the EIC. We attempt to complete the review process within 8-12 weeks.
D. Revised Manuscript Submission
Revised manuscripts should be returned directly to the EIC via PeerTrack. The Editor may choose to solicit an additional review (e.g. when major revisions are requested).
E. Copyright Assignment Form
With notification of manuscript acceptance the author will receive a Copyright Assignment Form (CAF). The corresponding author must forward this to all co-authors. CAFs must be printed, signed, and returned immediately to the EIC. To comply with the U.S. Copyright Law the manuscript cannot proceed to publication until all CAFs have been received.
F. Final Manuscript Submission
Having been notified of acceptance, the author will also be asked to provide an electronic copy of the final version of the manuscript to the Editor-in-Chief via PeerTrackTM. The file should be in Word (.doc) format; PDF’s are not acceptable.
All figures must be checked for minimum resolution by authors prior to submission. Using the Allen Press veriFig website, login using your email address and the password “figcheck” and follow directions on the screen (note that this application requires Java). You will be sent an email verifying the reproducibility of each figure.
G. Page Proofs
The corresponding author should receive page proofs (not galley) about one month after acceptance of the paper. Page proofs (as a PDF) will be sent via email to the corresponding author. Please note the options on the Author Main Page in PeerTrackTM to update alternate e-mail addresses and availability dates. Changes or rectification of errors not attributable to the printer may be charged to the author. Failure to return Authors’ proof promptly may delay publication.
H. Color Plates
Color figures are encouraged and all will appear as such in the electronic version of the Journal free of charge. Inclusion of color plates in the print version is available at charge—the actual printing cost is billed, which usually ranges from $200 to $400 per page. The Journal provides authors with one color page gratis, and the charge for printing multiple pages may be waived if color is deemed necessary by the EIC. The Managing Editor will bill authors directly for costs associated with color plate printing; payments should be submitted to the Treasurer.
I. Final Copy of Paper
The EIC will send authors a PDF of their published paper.
II. Manuscript Preparation (please follow directions carefully)
In general, the Journal conforms to the standards as posted by CSE Manual for Authors, Editors, and Publishers, 8th ed. (2014). Refer to recently published papers in the Journal to understand basic structure and formatting.
A. Style
Write in simple declarative sentences and be consistent. One of the most common mistakes is to shift between past and present tense.
B. Scientific Names
In general, Latin botanical names should be used throughout the text (not common names), formatted with Latin and Greek words in italics. With the first usage, provide the full name and authority. Check spelling and standardized author abbreviations in the International Plant Names Index (IPNI). As appropriate, specify the flora or taxonomic reference used in the study in the Materials and Methods section.
