JOURNAL OF ORTHOPAEDIC & SPORTS PHYSICAL THERAPY
All submissions to JOSPT Cases must
adhere to the following:
• Written in English
• Include a cover letter
• Not previously published either in print or digitally, or widely disseminated in a form other than abstracts at scientific conferences and meetings
• Undergo exclusive review by JOSPT Cases
• Address scientific, clinical, or professional issues relevant to musculoskeletal or sports-related physical therapy practice
• Written in accordance with the “Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals” by the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), December 2018 (http://www.icmje. org/recommendations/)
• Formatted according to AMA style guidelines (American Medical Association Manual of Style, 10th Edition), except for references
• Number references consecutively in alphabetical order Authors without previous experience publishing in a peer-reviewed medical journal are encouraged to review Scientific Writing in Health and Medicine resources at https://swihm.com. Further, submissions should meet the following criteria:
• Demonstrate Knowledge Translation: A gap exists between what is known in sports and orthopaedic physical therapy research and the knowledge, skills, and behaviors of health care providers around the world. This “knowledge-care” gap may inhibit clinical outcomes for patients and limit advancement of the physical therapy profession. Submissions should demonstrate knowledge translation in at least one of the following elements in the patient/client management model: examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and outcomes.
• Describe Important Clinical Learning: The clinical setting offers unique and diverse learning opportunities as clinicians attempt to translate knowledge into practice. Submissions should describe what clinical lessons were learned and how they informed practice. Common pitfalls with didactic knowledge, psychomotor skills, professional attitudes, and behaviors may be particularly relevant to highAuthor Guidelines for JOSPT Cases light as authors reflect on clinical learning in their case.
• Encourage Reader/Peer Engagement: Submissions should use formats that increase reader understanding of tools, techniques, and thought processes employed in the case. Examples include videos, infographics, diagrams, simulations, etc, to bring material to life and enhance reader retention and application. A well-written, peer-reviewed case should invite discussion of compelling inquiry-based questions. CASE REPORTS Case Reports must follow the CARE guidelines: consensus-based clinical case reporting (see http://www.care-statement. org) and submit a completed CARE checklist (https://www.care-statement. org/resources/checklist). Article length must be 2000 words or less. Cases should be structured as follows:
Title: Keep the case title clinical and straightforward.
Abstract: Summarize the case presentation and outcome in a maximum of 150 words. Emphasize what clinicians can learn from the case. Structure to include 5 sections: Background, Case Presentation, Outcome and Follow-up, Discussion, and Key Words (up to 6).
Background: Why is this case important for rehabilitation clinicians? Introduce the key knowledge translation and clinical learning concepts that this case demonstrates. Case Presentation: Provide a concise account of the case, including relevant, diagnostically important patient medical/social/family history. Ensure that personal data provided are not identified unless consent is obtained. Chronological sequence provides logical structure.
CASE REPORT STRUCTURE
• Title
• Abstract
• Background
• Case Presentation
• Differential Diagnosis
• Treatment
• Outcome and Follow-up
• Discussion
• Learning Points
• References
Differential Diagnosis (Decision Tree
Used by Author): Describe in detail how the final physical therapy diagnosis was determined. Describe relevant findings from subjective and objective examination. Present a clear rationale for the diagnosis.
Treatment: Detail all aspects of the care provided, including pharmacological and nonpharmacological (eg, surgery, physical therapy, supportive care, etc).= Include parameters of physical therapy care when appropriate/relevant. Consider using multimedia, such as videos, to demonstrate care to learners in a more robust way. Outcome and Follow-up: Explain outcome measures/tools used to show results. If applicable, describe any shortand long-term follow-up provided.
Discussion: Describe mechanisms of pathology/injury, guidelines and their relevance, diagnostic pathways (using diagrams as appropriate), and the points of interest of the case.
• Literature review: Concisely compare the case to the literature and briefly describe the literature search, including databases, MeSH headings, and years searched. Select only those articles strictly relevant to the case reported and its discussion. Include a brief review of similar published cases, if relevant.
