AUTHOR GUIDELINES
1. SUBMISSION
Authors should kindly note that submission implies that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in the proceedings of a scientific meeting or symposium.
Once the submission materials have been prepared in accordance with the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted online via the journal online editorial system.
Data Protection
By submitting a manuscript to or reviewing for this publication, your name, email address, and affiliation, and other contact details the publication might require, will be used for the regular operations of the publication, including, when necessary, sharing with the publisher (Wiley) and partners for production and publication. 2. AIMS AND SCOPE
Geoarchaeology is an interdisciplinary journal published six times per year (in January, March, May, July, September and November). It presents the results of original research at the methodological and theoretical interface between archaeology and the geosciences and includes within its scope: interdisciplinary work focusing on understanding archaeological sites, their environmental context, and particularly site formation processes and how the analysis of sedimentary records can enhance our understanding of human activity in Quaternary environments. Manuscripts should examine the interrelationship between archaeology and the various disciplines within Quaternary science and the Earth Sciences more generally, including, for example: geology, geography, geomorphology, pedology, climatology, oceanography, geochemistry, geochronology, and geophysics. We also welcome papers that deal with the biological record of past human activity through the analysis of faunal and botanical remains and palaeoecological reconstructions that shed light on past human-environment interactions. The journal also welcomes manuscripts concerning the examination and geological context of human fossil remains as well as papers that employ analytical techniques to advance understanding of the composition and origin or material culture such as, for example, ceramics, metals, lithics, building stones, plasters, and cements. Such composition and provenance studies should be strongly grounded in their geological context through, for example, the systematic analysis of potential source materials.
3. MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Research Articles –These are the most common type of submission. Research articles present original, significant, and rigorous geoarchaeological research of relevance to an international scholarly community. Although exceptions will be considered, text should not exceed 30 double-spaced, typewritten pages.
Short Contributions–The journal will consider short contributions that are less than 15 manuscript pages in length (double-spaced text). They may include up to three figures. This option is designed to encourage authors to submit manuscripts that present new methodological developments or preliminary results from highly significant sites or field studies. Short contribution submissions will be fast-track peer-reviewed. They should also be original contributions that are of interest to the international geoarchaeological community.
Geoarchaeology Review Papers – A key objective of the journal is to publish a series of Geoarchaeology Review Papers (GRPs) that reflect the breadth and relevance of modern geoarchaeology with the widest possible international coverage. In the best traditions of this journal, GRPs will be important contributions to scholarship that integrate ideas and findings at the forefront of current geoarchaeological knowledge (see the editorial by Woodward and Huckleberry, 2010). GRPs follow a fast track peer review process and are published as soon as possible following acceptance. Each GRP can be prefaced by a brief introduction and author biography. We invite prospective authors of a GRP to submit a proposal to the Editors-in-Chief.

Special Issues: Requests for publishing proceedings from professional meetings as a special issue of Geoarchaeology will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Proposals should be submitted in writing to the Co-Editors of the journal.
Comments on Previously Published Articles: We welcome short discussions on papers that have already appeared in Geoarchaeology. Discussions should be concise (ideally about 1000 words) and written in an objective and scientific manner. Authors should consult the Co-Editors in the first instance and then submit the discussion online via ScholarOne. Discussions should make a significant contribution to the debate and not be just an additional observation. They may include one or two figures. Authors should ensure that they include all the cited references, even if they were in the original paper. The author(s) of the paper under discussion will be given an opportunity to respond and both discussion and response will be published together. Discussion papers will be fast-track peer-reviewed and the editors reserve the right to reject those that do not conform to the standards of the journal.
4. PREPARING THE SUBMISSION
Parts of the Manuscript
The manuscript should be submitted in separate files: title page; main text file; figures; tables.
Note: Line numbering should not be included in the submitted manuscript.
Title page
The title page should contain:
i. A short informative title that contains the major key words. The title should not contain abbreviations (see Wiley's best practice SEO tips);
ii. The full names of the authors;
iii. The author's institutional affiliations where the work was conducted, with a footnote for the author’s present address if different from where the work was conducted;name and e-mail address of the corresponding author;
iv. Abstract and keywords;
Authorship
Please refer to the journal’s authorship policy the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section for details on eligibility for author listing.
Acknowledgments
Contributions from anyone who does not meet the criteria for authorship should be listed, with permission from the contributor, in an Acknowledgments section. Financial and material support should also be mentioned.
Conflict of Interest Statement
Authors will be asked to provide a conflict of interest statement during the submission process. For details on what to include in this section, see the section ‘Conflict of Interest’ in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section below. Submitting authors should ensure they liaise with all co-authors to confirm agreement with the final statement.
Abstract
Please provide an abstract of up to 200 words containing the major keywords summarizing the article. The abstract should be included in the main text file that is submitted.
Graphical/Visual Abstracts
Graphical/Visual Abstract caption: This is a narrative sentence to convey the article's essence and wider implications to a non-specialist audience. The maximum length is 50 words, but consider using 280 characters or less to facilitate social media sharing, which can increase the discoverability of your article.
Keywords
Please provide up to six keywords.
Main Text File
i. Main text which should include the abstract, introduction, materials and methods, results, and discussion;
ii. Acknowledgments;
iii. References;
iv. Figure captions;
v. Appendices (if relevant).
Figures, tables, and supporting information should be supplied as separate files.
The journal uses US spelling; however, authors may submit using either option, as spelling of accepted papers is converted during the production process.
Please format your manuscript with numbered section headings. Your first level heading should begin with 1, and then follow with 1.1, 1.2…2, 2.1, 2.2...3, 3.1 and so on.
Materials and Methods
If a method or tool is introduced in the study, including software, questionnaires, and scales, the author should state the license that is available under and any requirement for permission for use. If an existing method or tool is used in the research, the authors are responsible for checking the license and obtaining the permission. If permission was required, a statement confirming permission should be included in the Materials and Methods section.
5. EDITORIAL POLICIES AND ETHICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Peer Review and Acceptance
The acceptance criteria for all papers are the quality and originality of the research and its significance to journal readership. Papers will only be sent to review if the Editor-in-Chief determines that the paper meets the appropriate quality and relevance requirements.

Data Sharing and Data Accessibility
Geoarchaeology recognizes the many benefits of archiving research data. Geoarchaeology expects you to archive all the data from which your published results are derived in a public repository. The repository that you choose should offer you guaranteed preservation (see the registry of research data repositories at https://www.re3data.org/) and should help you make it findable, accessible, interoperable, and re-useable, according to FAIR Data Principles (https://www.force11.org/group/fairgroup/fairprinciples).
All accepted manuscripts are required to publish a data availability statement to confirm the presence or absence of shared data. If you have shared data, this statement will describe how the data can be accessed, and include a persistent identifier (e.g., a DOI for the data, or an accession number) from the repository where you shared the data. Authors will be required to confirm adherence to the policy. If you cannot share the data described in your manuscript, for example for legal or ethical reasons, or do not intend to share the data then you must provide the appropriate data availability statement. Geoarchaeology notes that FAIR data sharing allows for access to shared data under restrictions (e.g., to protect confidential or proprietary information) but notes that the FAIR principles encourage you to share data in ways that are as open as possible (but that can be as closed as necessary).

6. AUTHOR LICENSING
If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author will receive an email prompting them to log in to Author Services, where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be required to complete a copyright license agreement on behalf of all authors of the paper.
For authors signing the copyright transfer agreement
If the OnlineOpen option is not selected the corresponding author will be presented with the copyright transfer agreement (CTA) to sign. The terms and conditions of the CTA can be previewed in the samples associated with the Copyright FAQs.
7. PUBLICATION PROCESS AFTER ACCEPTANCE
Accepted Articles
All accepted manuscripts are subject to editing. Authors have final approval of changes prior to publication.
Proofs
Authors will receive an e-mail notification with a link and instructions for accessing HTML page proofs online. Page proofs should be carefully proofread for any copyediting or typesetting errors. Online guidelines are provided within the system. No special software is required, all common browsers are supported. Authors should also make sure that any renumbered tables, figures, or references match text citations and that figure legends correspond with text citations and actual
figures. Proofs must be returned within 48 hours of receipt of the email. Return of proofs via e-mail is possible in the event that the online system cannot be used or accessed.
Early View
The journal offers rapid speed to publication via Wiley’s Early View service. Early View (Online Version of Record) articles are published on Wiley Online Library before inclusion in an issue. Note there may be a delay after corrections are received before the article appears online, as Editors also need to review proofs. Once the article is published on Early View, no further changes to the article are possible. The Early View article is fully citable and carries an online publication date and DOI for citations.

8. POST PUBLICATION
Access and sharing
When the article is published online:
• The author receives an email alert (if requested).
• The link to the published article can be shared through social media.
• The author will have free access to the paper (after accepting the Terms & Conditions of use, they can view the article).
• The corresponding author and co-authors can nominate up to ten colleagues to receive a publication alert and free online access to the article.
