Instructions for contributors
The journal encourages authors to complete their copyright license forms online.
All submissions will be peer reviewed.
As a general guideline, articles should be 6,000-10,000 words in length.
Initial submissions are made online via the Opera Quarterly online submission manager and should include the main text of the article (preferably as a Word file); illustrations/music examples (as JPEG, TIFF, or PDF files); captions for illustrations/music examples; and an abstract of 100-200 words (with up to 10 separate keywords). For the purposes of peer review, all these files should be anonymized; the author’s name should not appear anywhere in the submission, including in the footnotes, or in any supplementary files. A separate title page (designated as Title Page) should be uploaded with the author's details and any acknowledgements. The online submission software will automatically create a single .pdf file containing the main text, supplementary files, and reduced-resolution versions of any figures that have been submitted. This document will be used when the manuscript undergoes peer review. The submitted files will appear in this .pdf sequentially, as specified on the submission page. There will be an opportunity to enter figure/plate captions and to check the .pdf file prior to final submission. Book, CD, and DVD reviews should be submitted to the Reviews Editor, Dr. Wayne Heisler Jr, Department of Music, The College of New Jersey, P.O. Box 7718, Ewing, NJ 08628-0718, USA, or via email (wheisler@tcnj.edu). (Please do not send books for review to the Oxford University Press office in Cary, NC, as they will not be forwarded.)
We are happy to consider publishing photographs or other art you might submit with your article, but we require proper written permission for their publication (see below). (The author is responsible for any fees incurred in the acquiring of such permissions.) Before your article can enter production, we will need high-resolution files of all the images; both JPEGs and TIFFs are acceptable, providing the files are of at least 300 dpi. It is the author's responsibility to include acknowledgements as stipulated by particular institutions.
Musical examples may be included in articles. When submitting an article for peer review, please submit music examples as TIFF, JPEG, or PDF files. If your article is accepted, we will ask you to submit Sibelius or Finale files of your music examples. Our music setter will modify the layout where necessary to fit our format. Music examples are expensive to set and inconvenient to revise, so please check that the notation of examples is complete and clearly legible.
The Opera Quarterly's Web site can support downloadable audio files. We can accept up to 2 MB of supplementary data per example. To determine if the type(s) of file you are interested in uploading is supportable on our server, contact the production team (operaq@oup.com). The copying of a copyrighted musical work or sound recording onto the Oxford University Press Web server constitutes exploitation of its reproduction right, for which authorization is required. For information on obtaining rights, visit the Harry Fox Agency Inc. Web site or contact the copyright owner of the sound recording (usually the record label) for authorization to copy sound recordings. You can also contact the Recording Industry Association of America or ASCAP for more information. For further questions and information, please contact the OUP permissions department (journals.permissions@oxfordjournals.org).
All figures and tables will be printed in black and white. Videos and color figures can be posted online as supplementary material at no cost.
Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals, authors will be invited to complete an online copyright license to publish form.
By submitting an article for publication you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting authors and that Oxford University Press ("OUP") may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the article. You agree to notify OUP immediately if your details change. If your article is accepted for publication, OUP will contact you using the email address you have used in the registration process. Please note that OUP does not retain copies of rejected articles.
