About Journal of Clinical Oncology
JCO is the primary forum of scientific discourse for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). Published thrice monthly, JCO is the foremost peer-reviewed journal focusing on clinical cancer research and the authoritative source for current information on the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancer.
If you need assistance, please contact the Editorial Office at 703-797-1900 or JCO@asco.org.
EZSubmit
JCO has adopted a format-free submission policy (EZSubmit). New submissions are not scrutinized for compliance with our formatting guidelines (reference style, word limits, order of components, etc). As long as the required information is present (cover letter, title page, abstract, references, CONSORT diagram for randomized studies, protocol for randomized and interventional trials, etc), the manuscript will be considered by the editors.
JCO is conscious of the time spent by authors on reformatting manuscripts to the specifications of journals. EZSubmit allows authors to submit their new manuscripts without having to adhere to such requirements. The addition of this policy will help authors and researchers save time and use their resources more efficiently.
Why Submit to JCO?
Highly Respected with International Reach
JCO is one of the most prestigious oncology journals in the world, with an Impact Factor of 44.544, placing it among the top 1% of all journals, and with an Eigenfactor of 0.24903, which is the highest among oncology publications. In addition, JCO has the highest h-index among oncology journals reported by Google Scholar Metrics.
With more than 30,000 individual subscribers and over 1,500 institutional subscribers spanning more than 100 countries, "JCO continues to dominate the list of influential and comprehensive resources in oncology and commands an impressive lead in readership reach as well as membership perception" (2014 Report by the Matalia Group).
Exceptionally Quick Review Process
All manuscripts submitted to JCO receive a timely review made possible by a large group of editors with national and international prominence, supported by an immense database of respected scientific reviewers and biostatisticians.
In addition to our usual review process, JCO offers two expedited review pathways for manuscripts that have immediate practice changing potential; 1) a Rapid Review process for newly submitted manuscripts, and 2) a Fast Track Presubmission pathway for selected manuscripts that have not yet been submitted to JCO.
1) The Rapid Review process is designed for submitted manuscripts that are deemed by the editors to represent timely and late breaking research that might have an immediate impact on patient care. For such manuscripts, initial peer review is typically completed within 72 hours of reviewer assignment, with a first editorial decision rendered shortly thereafter. If you believe that your manuscript is potentially suitable for the Rapid Review program based upon the practice changing nature of the work, please state this in your cover letter upon manuscript submission, and the editors will give your request careful consideration.
2) The Fast Track Presubmission process is a separate pathway for rapid decision making. This is reserved for practice changing manuscripts that may have undergone prior peer review by a highly regarded general medical journal, but were not accepted for publication for reasons of priority. Such papers may be more appropriate for an oncology specialty journal such as JCO. Authors who submit a presubmission inquiry to JCO (JCO@asco.org) involving previously reviewed papers will receive an editorial decision regarding suitability for the Fast Track program. Once submitted, such papers will then be evaluated in an expeditious manner, taking into account the previously performed peer reviews.
At the discretion of the editors, an article that has been accepted through the Rapid Review or Fast Track Presubmission pathways might also be considered for expedited publication as a Rapid Communication.
Innovative Article Types
Understanding the Pathway (UTP) – This unique article type provides a concise description of the underlying pathway or biological process, explaining its relevance to the original report, and highlighting future therapeutic or investigational directions pertaining to the pathway in cancer.
Oncology Grand Rounds (OGR) – Articles published in this category are case based, describing management approaches relevant to an original report published in the same issue.
Special Articles and Clinically Relevant Reviews – These highly prominent publications provide readers with clinically important guidelines that impact patient care, as well as timely reviews included in our Special Series issues as well as our Biology of Neoplasia reports.
Support Preparing your Submission
English Language Editing – Choose from the three options on offer. Whichever you select, we’ll ensure your manuscript meets international standards of scientific English and is free from common language errors.

Artwork Preparation – Every journal has specific guidelines for technical artwork. Our graphics experts will ensure your images meet JCO’s requirements.
Plagiarism Check – We can pinpoint passages in your manuscript that might be flagged by JCO for accidental plagiarism. Our assessment and expert assistance report will guide you through the revisions required.
Rapid Technical Review – Our expert reviewers swiftly identify any points that could lead to your manuscript being rejected, allowing you to address the issues before you submit.
