INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS

Why submit to the Journal of Cataract & Refractive Surgery® (JCRS)?

2019 Impact Factor: 2.689

In publication for over 25 years.

Cited in MEDLINE/PubMed, Current Contents, Science Citation Index, and EMBASE.

Official journal of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery and the European Society of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons.

Preeminent peer-reviewed monthly ophthalmology journal that publishes high-quality articles on all aspects of anterior segment surgery.

MISSION STATEMENT

The aim of JCRS is to publish manuscripts of a guaranteed high academic and scientific standard of broad international relevance to the field of cataract and refractive surgery. Our accepted manuscripts will advance the science in the field by challenging and/or improving current and emerging techniques and practices and adding to the general knowledge of cataract and refractive surgery.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Manuscripts submitted to the JCRS must be original material that has not been submitted, published, or accepted for publication elsewhere, in whole or in part, in English or in another language. All manuscripts are submitted to an international panel for peer review. Criteria for editorial review include suitability of subject matter, originality of content, contribution to the field, and timeliness.

The JCRS uses a single-blind review process. All contributions will be initially assessed by the Editor for suitability for the journal. Manuscripts deemed suitable are then typically sent to a minimum of two independent expert reviewers to assess the scientific quality of the paper. The Editor is responsible for the final decision regarding acceptance or rejection of articles.

The Editor's decision is final. The JCRS does not consider appeals to Reject decisions.

ARTICLE TYPES

The JCRS publishes Full-length articles, Laboratory Science articles, Review/Updates, Correspondence, Techniques, and Letters to the Editor. Guest Editorials and Special Reports are at the discretion/invitation of the Editors. The Consultation Section is by invitation of the Consultation Editors only. Case Reports are no longer published in the JCRS and should instead be submitted directly to our companion publication, JCRS Online Case Reports (JCRO).

See Instructions for Authors for submission guidelines and requirements.

Full-length articles are reports of completed clinical research. Articles comprised solely of 1 to 3 case reports should be submitted to JCRO.

Laboratory Science articles are reports of completed laboratory studies.

Review/Update articles are focused reviews that explore current literature and are useful to practicing cataract and refractive surgeons, or systematic reviews that are an in-depth analysis of a clinically relevant topic that may also contain a meta-analysis.

Review/Update articles must be approved by the Editors prior to submission to assess the appropriateness of the topic and to prevent duplication of similar topics already in preparation. Send approval requests to Managing Editor Genie Bailey at gbailey@ascrs.org and include:

A detailed outline: an abstract or list of subheads is not sufficient.

Reference list. It does not need to be the final list but should be as complete as possible.

Title page to include the author list and institutional affiliations.

Approval of a proposed review outline by the Editors is approval of the topic only. The review manuscript will be assigned an Editor and sent for peer review, with no guarantee of acceptance in advance.

Correspondence are short reports of completed clinical research.

Technique articles describe innovative surgical approaches to cataract and refractive surgery. This article type is free to the public upon publication.

Emphasis should be on the technique, not on clinical results.

Videos are strongly encouraged and should supplement, not replace, the description of the technique in the main text.

Letters to the Editors are correspondence about recent articles published in the JCRS. Replies are at the invitation of the Editors only. Letters/Replies are subject to peer review and editing. The JCRS will consider only one round of a Letter/Reply.

Letters about recently published JCRS articles should be submitted within 8 weeks of the article's publication in print.

Letters will publish without Replies if no response is received to an invitation to Reply, at the Editors’ discretion.

Consultation Section presents an interesting case study with discussion regarding treatment options. Contribution is by invitation of the Consultation Editors only.

Guest Editorials and  Special Reports are at the discretion/invitation of the Editors. For submission queries about this article type contact Managing Editor Genie Bailey at gbailey@ascrs.org.

AUTHORSHIP

The JCRS follows the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors uniform requirements for authorship:

Each author must make a substantial contribution to the intellectual content of the manuscript in each of the following categories:

Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work; AND

Drafting the work or revising it critically for important intellectual content; AND

Final approval of the version to be published; AND

Each author must:

Agree to be accountable for all aspects of the work in ensuring that questions related to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are appropriately investigated and resolved.

Sign the electronic authorship form and confirm which contributions they made to the submitted manuscript.

In submitting the manuscript, each author indicates that they have full access to all data in the study and take complete and public responsibility for the integrity of the data and the accuracy of the data analysis.

Corresponding Author

The corresponding author is responsible for ensuring that all co-authors meet the above authorship requirements. Each author agrees that the corresponding author will be responsible for the submission of the manuscript to the JCRS and any associated activities.

Groups as Authors

When a large, multicenter group has conducted the work, the group should identify as authors the individuals who accept direct responsibility for the manuscript. These individuals should fully meet the criteria for authorship defined above. When submitting a group-authored manuscript, the Corresponding Author should clearly identify all individual authors as well as the group name. Other members of the group may be listed under the group name in the Acknowledgments section of the manuscript. The group member names and the names of individuals whom the group has identified as being directly responsible for the manuscript are indexed by MEDLINE/PubMed.

Conflict of Interest Disclosures

All authors must report all financial disclosures in medicine, whether or not the authors judge them to be related to the specific manuscript being submitted, or include a statement of none to disclose. Financial disclosures must include the entity (government, foundation, grant, commercial company, academic institution) and the type of support: personal fees (income from honoraria, consulting, lectures, speakers' bureaus, expert testimony, commercial employment, stock or equity interests), intellectual property rights (royalties, patents, licenses, copyright), and/or miscellaneous forms of support (drugs, equipment, travel expenses, writing assistance, administrative support).

The online submission form will collect disclosures information. However, a COI disclosures summary statement must also be listed on the title page of the manuscript.

Changes to Author List Post Acceptance

Once a manuscript is accepted, any change to the author list, including addition or deletion of a name, order of presentation, and equal contribution statements, requires the written consent of all authors. If an author is added to the list post acceptance, they must meet the requirements for authorship, sign the JCRS Authorship Form, and declare any conflict of interest. Contact the Editorial Office (jcrs@ascrs.org ) for information.

Electronic Authorship Form

When the manuscript is submitted, all authors will receive an email with a hyperlink to the Author Questionnaire to confirm their contribution, to declare/state none to declare Conflict of Interest disclosures, and to agree to copyright transfer; this is required for submission. The Corresponding Author should ensure they enter current email addresses for all co-authors during submission and make the co-authors aware to expect the email with the hyperlink. This applies to both New and Revised submissions of all article types.

CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION

JCRS requires that human clinical trials be registered before enrollment in order for the manuscript to be sent for peer review and considered for publication. The Methods section must state where the registration information is available to the public. Satisfactory public databases include the NIH Clinical Trials site and the ISRCTN registry.

JCRS supports the NIH Principles and Guidelines for Reporting Preclinical Research.

FINANCIAL SUPPORT

Financial support, or a statement of none, received for the work submitted must be listed on the title page of the manuscript. The full name and location (city/state/country) of the entity that provided funding/grants/other financial support, public and private, and the grant number(s) as applicable, must be provided. Briefly describe the role of the sponsor(s), if any, in study design; in the collection, analysis and interpretation of data; in the writing of the report; and in the decision to submit the article for publication. If the funding source(s) had no such involvement, then this should be stated.

IDENTIFYING PATIENT INFORMATION OR IMAGES

Authors should apply best practices for de-identifying patient-level data from the manuscript content.

Do not use patient names or initials, examination dates, birth dates, hospital name or ID number, or other personal identification data in the main text or in Figures, Tables, Supplemental Data, or Videos.

For photographs or videos that identify an individual (images exposing anything more than the eyes) authors must upload a signed statement from the parent or guardian, or relatives where the patient is deceased, granting permission to publish the image(s), at the time of manuscript submission. The JCRS provides a Patient Photo Permission Form for, available under “Files and Resources” on the JCRS Editorial Manager home page. Forms signed in a language other than English require a translated version to be uploaded with the original form.

An article that contains a case report within the main text requires explicit patient consent to publish, as per the CARE Case Report Guidelines. (Note: an article comprised solely of 1 to 3 case reports should be submitted to the JCRO). Include a consent statement in the Methods section of the manuscript: Specify who provided consent (patient or legal guardian; relatives where the patient is deceased) and that consent was obtained in writing. If the medical team/IRB take responsibility for the patient data, or if the need for informed consent was waived by the IRB, this must be stated.

A copy of a signed patient consent form must be uploaded with the manuscript files at submission. The JCRS provides a Case Report Patient Consent Form, available under “Files and Resources” on the JCRS Editorial Manager home page. Authors may use their own form as long as the same information is collected. Forms signed in a language other than English require a translated version to be uploaded with the original form.

INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD (IRB) APPROVAL

If human subjects were involved in the investigation, the authors must confirm, by statement in the Methods section, that IRB/Ethics Committee approval was obtained or that the IRB/Ethics Committee ruled that approval was not required, and the name of the ruling IRB/Ethics Committee.

Authors cannot make the decision as to whether IRB approval is needed; the IRB must make that decision and provide a waiver if approval is not required.

Authors must also confirm, by statement in the Methods section, that the research followed the tenets of the Declaration of Helsinki and that informed consent was obtained from the subjects after explanation of the nature and possible consequences of the study.

U.S. authors should follow HIPAA regulations for their patients and include a statement of same in the Methods section.

The JCRS does not accept for peer review human studies that did not have prior IRB review and approval/statement of waiver.

Use of Animals in Biomedical Research

If animals are used in the protocol or the study, the Methods section must include a description of the animal care protocol that was followed, the name of the institution that sponsored the study, and the relevant IRB approval information. Biomedical research involving animals must conform to generally accepted principles of animal maintenance and care, such as those of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. For Laboratory Science studies that used animal eyes, state from where, and the location, the eyes were obtained, in the Methods section.
