Author Guidelines
1. ABOUT JDDG
Aims & Scope
The Journal der Deutschen Dermatologischen Gesellschaft (JDDG) strives to publish dermatologic papers of the highest quality. JDDG is published in English online and in a printed German version.
JDDG invites submissions under a broad scope of topics relevant to clinical dermatology and research, including CME articles, reviews, mini-reviews, original articles, guidelines and correspondence. JDDG is the official journal of the German Society of Dermatology (DDG) and the Austrian Society of Dermatology and Venereology (ÖGDV), as well as other professional societies, but attracts contributions from dermatologists and many other sources worldwide and has an international circulation. The overriding criteria for publication are scientific merit, originality and interest to a multidisciplinary audience.
JDDG prefers to receive submissions in English (excluding CME articles).
2. MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES
JDDG invites the following types of submission:
Continuing Medical Education (CME) Articles (Section Editor: Prof. Dr. Franz Trautinger, Prof. Dr. Amir Yazdi)
The Journal aims to publish in-depth, substantiated, educational articles presenting core information for the continuing professional development of the practicing dermatologist. CME articles should not be simply reviews, but should present new information not readily available in textbooks. CME Articles will usually be solicited by the CME Planning Workgroup and the CME Section Editors. To have unsolicited manuscripts considered for publication in the JDDG as certified CME activities, authors must first submit proposal manuscript outlines for approval by the CME Planning Workgroup and the CME Section Editor.
Reviews (Section Editors: Prof. Dr. Kilian Eyerich, Prof. Dr. med. C. Géraud)
The Journal aims to publish high-quality reviews about any relevant topic of high interest to a broad dermatological readership. Reviews may be solicited by the Editor or may be submitted unsolicited by authors for publication. All reviews will be subject to peer review. Reviews must include an unstructured abstract (maximum 200 words), and should not exceed 3000 words of body text and 50 references. Use of illustrations and figures is encouraged.
Mini-reviews (Section Editors: Prof. Dr. med. J. Utikal, Prof. Dr. med, C. Géraud)
The Journal aims to publish concise, high-quality mini-reviews about recent advances in clinical or laboratory research. Mini-reviews may be solicited by the Editor or may be submitted by authors for publication subject to peer review. Mini-reviews must include an unstructured abstract (maximum 200 words) and should not exceed 1500 words of body text, 25 references, and 3 figures/tables.

Original articles are the Journal's primary mode of communication. Original articles must include a structured abstract (maximum 200 words; see Manuscript requirements), and should not exceed 3000 words of body text and 50 references. If the list exceeds 50 references, an exception is possible: Selected references appear in the print version; the full reference list appears in the English online version.
Guidelines (Section Editor: Prof. Dr. A. Nast)
Selected guidelines will be published in this section. The guidelines must be submitted via the JDDG ScholarOne manuscript submission site. They must follow the methods of the AWMF (www.awmf.org) as well as the AGREE-Instruments (http://www.agreetrust.org). Guidelines up to 5000 words will usually be published in their entirety. Longer guidelines must either be published as a supplement or online with a summary – not exceeding eight print pages or 5000 words – published in the journal.

JDDG publishes Clinical Letters describing patient cases and Scientific Letters (concise communications). Items of correspondence should be formatted in one continuous section and should not exceed 750 words, 10 references and 3 figures/tables. All letters are subject to review.
Comments
These contributions will most often relate to articles published in JDDG within the last 3 months and will be handled by the editor-in-chief. In addition, comments may be views and assessments of professional, society or scientific topics, which reflect the subjective opinions of the authors. Comments related to previously published articles may be accompanied by a second comment by the authors of the primary JDDG article.
Clinical Letters
Clinical Letters will only be published if they describe patient cases of novel and extraordinary significance.
Scientific Letters
Scientific Letters usually describe completed laboratory or clinical work not suitable for Original Articles, briefly describe new therapeutic approaches or attempt in other ways to improve communication between clinicians and researchers.
Quiz Cases
Quiz Cases containing instructive clinical and/or, occasionally, dermatopathological clues should follow the established pattern of the quiz case report and should not exceed 750 words, 3 figures/tables and 10 references. The diagnosis must not appear in the quiz section of the case report.
Dermatological Surgery – Tricks of the Trade (Section Editor: Dr. R. Löser)
This manuscript category contains brief details of surgical or other technical procedures. Tricks of the Trade should not exceed 750 words, 3 figures/tables and 10 references.
Editorials / Commentaries
Editorials and commentaries are typically commissioned by the Editors. However, suggestions for such articles are welcome and should be directed to the Editorial Office (jddg@derma.de).
Forum
The Forum appears only in the German print version, so articles must be submitted in German. The Forum publishes Society and Meeting Reports, as well as Perspectives (views and assessments of professional, society or scientific topics which reflect the subjective opinions of the authors), and papers on the History of Dermatology. The latter two submissions should not exceed 1500 words, 3 figures or tables and 25 references.
3. SECTIONS
JDDG especially encourages submissions in the fields of Cutaneous Biology and Experimental Dermatology, as well as of Health Services Research / Evidence-based Dermatology, and Dermatopathology.
Cutaneous Biology and Experimental Dermatology (Section Editor: PD. Dr. E. Gaffal)a
JDDG strives to publish papers describing original research on all aspects of cutaneous biology and all fields of experimental dermatology. Topics include, but are not limited to biochemistry, biophysics, carcinogenesis, cell regulation, development, extracellular matrix, genetics, immunology, microbiology, molecular and cell biology, physiology, pharmacology, and photobiology. Manuscripts may be submitted as original articles, reviews, mini-reviews or scientific letters. Authors are requested to indicate on the title page and in the cover letter that their contribution is intended for this section.
Health Services Research (Section Editor: PD Dr. med. T. Weberschock)
This section covers qualitative and quantitative studies on health services research, comparative effectiveness research, secondary data analyses, and epidemiological studies with relevance for routine medical care. Manuscripts may be submitted as original articles, reviews, or mini-reviews. Authors are requested to indicate on the title page and in the cover letter that their contribution is intended for this section.
Evidence-based Dermatology (Section Editor: Prof. Dr. med. A. Nast)
The section includes methodologically sound summaries of published data by means of systematic reviews, meta-analysis or evidence-based guidelines. Publications focusing on methodology or on the implementation of evidence-based medicine can also be submitted to this section. Manuscripts may be submitted as original articles, reviews, or mini-reviews. Authors are requested to indicate on the title page and in the cover letter that their contribution is intended for this section.
Dermatopathology (Section Editor: Prof. Dr. D. Metze)
The Journal strongly invites submission of articles emphasizing histopathology of cutaneous disease. This section includes clinical and experimental studies on dermatopathology. Manuscripts may be submitted as original articles, reviews, mini-reviews, scientific letters or quizzes. Authors are requested to indicate on the title page and in the cover letter that their contribution is intended for this section

Electronic submission
All submissions - except articles for the Forum section - should be made online at the JDDG ScholarOne Manuscript submission.
JDDG employs a plagiarism detection system. By submitting your manuscript to JDDG you accept that your manuscript may be automatically screened for plagiarism against previously published works. Any breach of research or publication ethics including plagiarism, submission of fraudulent results/data, image/data manipulation, and false or incomplete attribution of authorship will be considered malpractice and the Journal will take action along the lines of the general principles outlined by COPE in the Guidelines of Good Publication Practice.
Cover letter
Please include a cover letter declaring that the paper has not been published previously or submitted for publication elsewhere and will not be submitted for publication elsewhere before a decision is reached concerning publication in the JDDG. Please state in the cover letter for which category the manuscript is intended.

5. MANUSCRIPT REQUIREMENTS
The manuscript (except for CME articles) should be written in English. JDDG will continue to accept submissions also in German, but discourages authors to submit their manuscripts in German. JDDG uses American English style.

External form
Please number pages consecutively in the bottom right corner. Any abbreviations must be explained in the text. Please number figures and tables consecutively in the order in which they occur in the text. The terms “Figure” and “Table” must not be abbreviated.
All figures must be supplied electronically (JPEG, TIFF) and must be numbered.
Authors are encouraged to visit the Wiley website for authors which details further information on the preparation and submission of articles and figures.
Manuscript sequence
Page 1: Title, authors with first names, name of institute or clinic, short title (55 characters at most) in the language of the manuscript (i.e. either English or German), corresponding author with postal address, phone and fax numbers and email address.
Page 2: The abstract should not exceed 200 words, should be easy to understand and not require reference to the text. The abstract should be written in the language of the manuscript (i.e. either English or German). Abbreviations and references should be avoided in the abstract. The information in the abstract must correspond with that in the text. For original contributions the abstract must be structured.
Structured abstract: For Original Articles, the summary must have four sections: background and objectives, patients and methods, results, and conclusions.
Page 3 and following: The proper text, structured according to the requirements of the category (Original contributions: introduction, patients/ material and methods, results, discussion, conflict of interest) and lists of references, figures and tables.
Quality of Photographs
In a very visual specialty, high quality medical photographs can greatly enhance the understanding of dermatologic manuscripts. To ensure that your photographs meet minimal standards for publication in JDDG, please keep the following tips in mind. The submission of low-quality photographs alone may lead to the rejection of an article.
Technical considerations:
Set your camera to 3 megapixels or greater. If you plan to crop extensively, an even higher resolution is desirable. If using .JPG file type, use the highest quality. When sending a photograph to a journal, send the original or cropped image file (with .JPG or .TIF extension) with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Do not send an image pasted into a Microsoft Word or Microsoft PowerPoint document.
Legal considerations:
Obtain proper written consent to publish the image if there is any identifiable patient information in the picture. If in doubt, obtain consent. Use of black bars over the eyes of a patient is not acceptable to mask the identity of a patient.
Electronic Artwork
Vector graphics (e.g. line artwork) should be saved in Encapsulated Postscript Format (EPS), and bitmap files (e.g. photographs) in Tagged Image File Format (TIFF). Line art must be scanned at a minimum of 800 dpi. Further instructions can be found here.
References
Please number the references consecutively in the order in which the citations appear in the text. References are cited in the text by inserting the appropriate numbers in square brackets. Each bibliographic entry must have a reference in the text (and vice versa). Format references as below, using standard (Medline) abbreviations for journal titles. If the reference includes 4 authors, all must be named. If there are more than 4 authors in the reference entry, 3 authors must be named and those that follow must be replaced by “et al”.

6. REPORTING STANDARDS
Manuscripts reporting randomized controlled trials (RCTs) must follow the CONSORT statement. RCTs will not be considered by JDDG without submission of a completed CONSORT checklist. Checklists should be uploaded during manuscript submission using file designation 'Supplementary files for review'.
Manuscripts reporting observational studies must follow STROBE guidelines. Observational studies will not be considered by JDDG without submission of a completed STROBE checklist. Checklists should be uploaded during manuscript submission using file designation 'Supplementary files for review'.
Note: All reporting guidelines have to be completed with an explicit citation of the relevant manuscript content in the checklist or a detailed reference where in the manuscript each item is found (page and paragraph only is not sufficient).
7. SUPPORTING INFORMATION
JDDG encourages the submission of underlying datasets, appendices, movie files and other data as online-only supporting information. Supporting information should be important ancillary information that is relevant to the parent article but which does not or cannot appear in the printed edition of the Journal. It should be uploaded during manuscript submission (see Section 3) using file designation 'Supplementary files for review'.
8. GENERAL
Manuscripts not conforming to these guidelines cannot be processed and will be returned to the author for correction or completion. Correspondence from the editors or the publisher will be sent to the author named under "correspondence to". The author is responsible for retaining a complete copy of the submitted manuscript until it has been published. The publisher cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss of the manuscript or its parts. The publisher will destroy the manuscript three months after publication.
Original Publication
Submission of a manuscript will be held to imply that it contains original unpublished work and is not being submitted for publication elsewhere at the same time. The author must supply a full statement to the Editor about all submissions and previous reports that might be regarded as redundant or duplicate publication of the same or very similar work. JDDG employs a plagiarism detection system. By submitting your manuscript, you accept that your manuscript may be screened for plagiarism against previously published works including those in other languages.
Conflicts of Interest
Authors are responsible for disclosing all financial and personal relationships between themselves and others that might be perceived by others as biasing their work. To prevent ambiguity, authors must state explicitly whether potential conflicts do or do not exist.
Ethics
When reporting experiments on human subjects, indicate whether the procedures followed were in accordance with the ethical standards of the responsible committee on human experimentation (institutional or regional) and with the Helsinki Declaration of 1975, as revised in 1983. Do not use patients' names, initials or hospital numbers, especially in illustrative material. When reporting experiments on animals, indicate which guidelines on the care and use of laboratory animals was followed. A statement describing explicitly the ethical background of the studies should be included in all manuscripts in the Materials and Methods section. Ethics committee or institutional review board approval should be stated. Patients have a right to privacy that should not be infringed without informed consent. Identifying information should not be published in written descriptions, photographs or pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and the patient (in the alternative parent or guardian) gives written informed consent for publication. Identifying details should be omitted if they are not essential but patient data should never be altered or falsified in an attempt to attain anonymity. Complete anonymity is difficult to achieve and informed consent should be obtained if there is any doubt. For example, masking the eye region in photographs of patients is inadequate protection of anonymity.
Authorship
All persons designated as authors should qualify for authorship and all those who qualify should be listed. Each author should have participated sufficiently in the work to take public responsibility for appropriate portions of it. One or several authors must take responsibility for the integrity of the work as a whole, from inception to published article. Authorship credit should be based only on 1) substantial contributions to conception and design, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data; 2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content. Conditions 1 and 2 must all be met. All authors must approve of the final version to be submitted. Acquisition of funding, the collection of data or general supervision of the research group, by themselves, do not justify authorship. All others who contributed to the work who are not authors should be named in the Acknowledgments section.
Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE)
The JDDG is a member of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Adherence to their submission criteria is required for publication in the JDDG; mandatory fields are included in the online submission process to ensure this. If, at a later stage in the submission process or even after publication, a manuscript or authors are found to have disregarded these criteria, it is the duty of the Editors to report this to COPE. COPE may recommend that action be taken, including but not exclusive to, informing the authors' professional regulatory body and/or institution of such a dereliction.

9. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON ACCEPTANCE

If your paper is accepted, the author identified as the formal corresponding author for the paper will receive an email prompting them to login into Author Services; where via the Wiley Author Licensing Service (WALS) they will be able to complete the license agreement on behalf of all authors on the paper.

10. PROOFS
Page proofs will be sent electronically to the corresponding author and should be returned within 3 days of receipt to the Production Editor. Significant textual alterations are unacceptable at proof stage without the approval of the Editor, and they are likely to result in the delay of publication. The corresponding author will receive an e-mail alert containing a link to a secure web site. A working e-mail address must therefore be provided for the corresponding author. In the absence of the corresponding author, please arrange for a colleague to access the e-mail to retrieve the proofs. Please note that you have final responsibility for what is stated in the proofs of your manuscript. However, the proofs are checked thoroughly by the JDDG editorial team and if we do not receive corrections after two automated reminders to the email address supplied for the corresponding author then we will assume that we have your approval for publication.
Wiley’s Author Name Change Policy
In cases where authors wish to change their name following publication, Wiley will update and republish the paper and redeliver the updated metadata to indexing services. Our editorial and production teams will use discretion in recognizing that name changes may be of a sensitive and private nature for various reasons including (but not limited to) alignment with gender identity, or as a result of marriage, divorce, or religious conversion. Accordingly, to protect the author’s privacy, we will not publish a correction notice to the paper, and we will not notify co-authors of the change. Authors should contact the journal’s Editorial Office with their name change request.
Early View
JDDG is covered by the publisher's Early View service. Early View articles are complete and final. They have been fully reviewed, revised and edited for publication, and the authors’ final corrections have been incorporated. Because they are in final form, no changes can be made subsequent to Early View publication. Early View articles can be cited and tracked by DOI.
OnlineOpen
OnlineOpen is available to authors of primary research articles who wish to make their article available to non-subscribers on publication, or whose funding agency requires grantees to archive the final version of their article. With OnlineOpen the author, the author's funding agency, or the author's institution pays a fee to ensure that the article is made available to non-subscribers upon publication via Wiley Online Library, as well as deposited in the funding agency's preferred archive. Prior to acceptance, there is no requirement to inform the Editorial Office that you intend to publish your paper OnlineOpen if you do not wish to. All OnlineOpen articles are treated in the same way as any other article. They go through the Journal's standard peer-review process and will be accepted or rejected based on their own merit.
Any authors wishing to send their paper OnlineOpen will be required to complete the payment form available from our website.
Author material archive policy
Please note that unless specifically requested, the Publisher will dispose of all submitted hardcopy or electronic material three months after publication. If you require the return of any material submitted, please inform the Editorial Office or Production Editor as soon as possible if you have not yet done so.
