Journal AWWA Submission Guidelines

Journal AWWA invites water professionals (both AWWA members and nonmembers) to submit ideas or topics pertinent to drinking water, wastewater, and water reuse. Of particular interest are feature articles that would be of use to water utilities and professionals in the water industry. Such articles must be educational and informative, and reflect Journal AWWA’s ongoing commitment to providing high-quality guidance and information to water professionals.

If you have an idea for an article and want to discuss its suitability for Journal AWWA, contact the Editor-in-Chief at journaleditor@awwa.org. Authors are strongly advised to consult a recent issue of Journal AWWA for guidance on style and general layout of articles.

1. Aims and Scope

Journal AWWA serves as the voice of the water industry and is an authoritative source of information for water professionals and the communities they serve. Journal AWWA provides an international forum for the industry’s thought and practice leaders to share their perspectives and experiences with the goal of continuous improvement of all water systems.

Journal AWWA publishes articles about the water industry’s innovations, trends, controversies, and challenges, covering subjects such as public works planning, infrastructure management, human health, environmental protection, finance, and law. Journal AWWA will continue its long history of publishing in-depth and innovative articles on protecting the safety of our water, the reliability and resilience of our water systems, and the health of our environment and communities.

2. Article Types

2.1 Features

These articles are a blend of technical, managerial, legal, regulatory, and financial guidance that undergo a technical review before acceptance for publication. Content categories for features include the following:

Technology articles focused on innovative, cutting-edge treatment, and distribution system approaches.

Case studies translating practical experiences into useful, directly applicable insights that other utilities can consider.

Management articles that offer transformative ideas and methods that can be applied in practical situations.

Title and Author Information

The full title of the feature article should be 12 words or fewer. Include a short version of the title used for the running head (limit of four words), which appears at the top of alternating pages throughout the article. List the authors’ names directly under the title.

Recommendations for Title Page Art

All feature articles begin with a title page that includes an image that spreads across the two opening pages. To help the layout artist select an appropriate image, provide a brief description of an image that best represents the content of the article. If preferred, authors are welcome to include images (or examples of images) for this title page.

Key Takeaways

The key takeaways briefly summarize the main points of the article. They are meant to draw in the reader and reinforce the principal ideas the reader should retain. Each key takeaway should be fewer than 20 words. Three to four key takeaways should be placed just above the text.

Text

The word count for feature articles ranges from 2,000 to 5,000 words.

The following are general formatting requirements.

Save as a Microsoft Word file.

Text should be double-spaced and left aligned. Single space after each sentence.

Use one-inch margins (top, bottom, left, and right).

Use 12-point font.

Ensure that headings and subheadings aid in easy reading. No more than three subheading levels should be used.

Define initialisms, acronyms, and abbreviations (not units of measure) on first use in parentheses after first mention.

Do not use endnotes/footnotes. Any tangential discussions should be included in-text using parentheses or a sidebar (if justified by length).

REFERENCES    Journal AWWA discourages use of traditional scholarly references. Authors should instead use full in-text citations and refer to outside content only when attribution is necessary or if the external source is the point of the presented concept. If in-text references are used, authors should limit citations to fewer than 10.
