Earth Sciences History - Information for Authors
Scope of the Journal
Manuscripts are welcomed in the following areas:
Historical work on all areas of the earth sciences – including geology, geography, geophysics, oceanography, paleontology, meteorology, and climatology.
Historical studies: biography, history of ideas, social history, and histories of institutions, organizations, and techniques.
Additionally, we publish eloges and book reviews.
Submitting your Manuscript
Submit manuscripts by email (preferably) or mail to the Editor or to an appropriate Associate Editor.
Book Reviews should be submitted to the Book Review Editor.
Follow the Author's Guidelines HERE. When in doubt on fine points, ask the Editor.
Our Editor is a volunteer and does all the typesetting himself. Please ensure that you follow the guidelines, so that he does not have to spend hours reformatting your document!
Manuscripts should be submitted to Earth Sciences History with the understanding that upon publication, copyright will be transferred to the History of Earth Sciences Society. This understanding precludes Earth Sciences History from considering material that is under consideration or accepted for publication elsewhere.
Authors are respectfully requested to make a contribution toward page charges, but publication of manuscripts is not contingent upon contributions. Color figures/plates can be included in the online edition at no charge to the author, but if color is desired in the print version, page charges will apply; contact the Editor for current rates.
Authors with a U.S. dollar bank account should send a check to the Treasurer via post.
Authors outside of the U.S. should contact the Treasurer to arrange the most convenient method of payment. They will then receive an electronic invoice listing the charges for color figure pages, voluntary pages, supplemental copies, and/or back issues. We recommend that authors pay by credit card once they receive this invoice. By clicking on the payment button included on the invoice, the credit card payment can made directly to the HESS Paypal account.
Authors will be supplied with a PDF of their paper. Reprints are not available, and neither are complimentary copies to authors of the issue in which their paper appears.
Additional Information for Book Reviews
Book reviewing is a critical aspect of outreach to both professionals and the general public. Reviews are published for books covering all aspects of the history of the earth sciences. The Book Review Editor welcomes volunteers for this task, because it is impossible for one person to be aware of all books worthy of review.
Submit book reviews to the Book Review Editor.
