Guide for Authors
Aims and scope
Biological Psychology publishes original scientific papers on neural, endocrine, immune, and other physiological aspects of psychological states and processes. Such aspects include assessments by biochemistry, electrophysiology, and neuroimaging during psychological experiments as well as biologically induced changes in psychological function. Psychological investigations based on biological theories are also of interest. All aspects of psychological functioning, including psychopathology, are germane.
The Journal is focused on work with human individuals, but may consider work with animals, if conceptually related to issues in human biological psychology. The Journal welcomes work that spans disciplines and methods and recruits an editorial team that is especially suited for handling such manuscripts. Empirical reports are the core of the Journal, but methodological and theoretical reports relevant to biological psychology are encouraged (see list of article types for more information). Finally, the Journal regularly publishes special issues on selected topics within its scope.
Benefits to authors
We also provide many author benefits, such as free PDFs, a liberal copyright policy, special discounts on Elsevier publications and much more. Please click here for more information on our author services.
Please see our Guide for Authors for information on article submission. If you require any further information or help, please visit our Support Center
Your Paper Your Way
We now differentiate between the requirements for new and revised submissions. You may choose to submit your manuscript as a single Word or PDF file to be used in the refereeing process. Only when your paper is at the revision stage, will you be requested to put your paper in to a 'correct format' for acceptance and provide the items required for the publication of your article.

Types of paper
Empirical Article
This type of manuscript reports original empirical research in a standard format with sections Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion. Although there is no fixed limit, the recommended length should not exceed 10,000 words. However, at the discretion of the editorial team authors may be requested to shorten or lengthen specific aspects of the manuscript.
Brief Report
Shorter empirical articles that are based on less complex designs and/or communicate a limited set of novel findings are considered with a 2,000-word and 30-reference limit.
Review
Manuscripts that review the literature on a particular topic comprehensively in narrative or meta-analytic form are welcome, their typical length should not exceed 12,000 words. They should provide a novel contribution to the literature beyond a simple summary of existing work.
Perspective
Manuscripts that review a smaller section of the empirical literature and articulate a coherent concept, opinion, or proposal for future research, are also considered. The typical length of the text should not exceed 5,000 words.
Debate
Proposals for topics that would profit from a debate among experts in the field can be submitted to the Editors of the journal, as a 1,000-word synopsis of the pros and cons of the issue and a list of potential invitees for comment.
Guest Editorial or Commentary
These brief and succinct commentaries are invited by the editors and highlight merits (novelty, significance, or challenge for further research) of a particular paper recently published in Biological Psychology, or draw attention to an important and timely topic. The typical length should not exceed 1,500 words.
Letter to the Editor
Brief communications about articles published in Biological Psychology can be submitted and will be evaluated by the editors on their merit for publication. The typical length should not exceed 500 words.
Note: Word counts should not include abstract, title page, references, tables, and figures.
