Instructions for authors

About the Journal

Teaching and Learning in Medicine  is an international, peer-reviewed journal publishing high-quality, original research. Please see the journal's  Aims & Scope  for information about its focus and peer-review policy.

Please note that this journal only publishes manuscripts in English. Non-native English-speaking authors are encouraged to use a reputable professional editing service to increase their manuscript’s readiness for peer review.

Teaching and Learning in Medicine  accepts the following types of article:

Groundwork

Validation

Investigations

Educational Case Reports

Observations

TLM ’s final acceptance rate is approximately 7%. Manuscripts are first reviewed by the editors to determine prioritization for peer review. Approximately 25% of new submissions are sent out to review. To increase the likelihood that a manuscript will be prioritized for review, authors must compose manuscripts in quality English using the content and formatting guidelines provided in these instructions. Manuscripts not submitted in conformance with these guidelines will be returned without review.

Open Access

You have the option to publish open access in this journal via our Open Select publishing program. Your research funder or your institution may require you to publish your article open access. Visit our  Author Services  website to find out more about open access policies and how you can comply with these.

You will be asked to pay an article publishing charge (APC) to make your article open access and this cost can often be covered by your institution or funder. Use our  APC finder  to view the APC for this journal.

Please visit our  Author Services website  or contact  openaccess@tandf.co.uk  if you would like more information about our Open Select Program.

Peer Review and Ethics

Taylor & Francis is committed to peer-review integrity and upholding the highest standards of review. Once your paper has been assessed for suitability by the editor, it will then be double blind peer reviewed by independent, anonymous expert referees. Find out more about  what to expect during peer review  and read our guidance on  publishing ethics.

Preparing Your Paper

All papers should be written with the following elements in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figures; figure captions (as a list).

All papers should contain between 3 and 5 keywords. Read  making your article more discoverable , including information on choosing a title and search engine optimization.

Groundwork

Medical education scholars are increasingly recognizing the centrality of context to all aspects of teaching and learning. Groundwork articles examine in-depth a particular phenomenon so as to advance description and understanding of practice systems and their evolution. These articles may feature ethnographic studies, inter-disciplinary or conceptual literature reviews, surveys, work analyses, and incident investigations, among other approaches. Note –  TLM rarely publishes systematic reviews of educational outcome studies or single-institution survey audits (e.g., knowledge on some topic of trainees at one institution). In addition, literature reviews that result in a very small number of articles are rarely selected for publication.

Groundwork articles should contain a structured abstract using the format presented below. The body of the manuscript need not conform to the structure of the abstract.

Phenomenon (Briefly state the phenomenon that was studied in depth)

Approach (Briefly describe the investigatory approach)

Findings (Briefly state the findings of the investigation)

Insights (Briefly present the new insights about the phenomenon gained by the present investigation, which improve theoretical understanding)
