INSTRUCTIONS TO CONTRIBUTORS
It is understood that manuscripts submitted to Zeitschrift für Kristallographie – Crystalline Materials have not been and will not simultaneously be submitted or published elsewhere unless otherwise agreed. With the acceptance of the manuscript for publication the publishers acquire full and exclusive copyright for all languages and for all countries.

Crystal structure determinations will only be published in Zeitschrift für Kristallographie – Crystalline Materials if at least one of the following conditions is fulfilled:
- the data collection was performed under non-ambient conditions (high/low temperature, high pressure, external electric or magnetic fields etc.)
- novel data collection techniques and/or structure determination methods were used
- in addition to the structure analysis also structure-property relationships are discussed
- aperiodic crystals or disordered samples were studied
- the investigated material is without any doubt of high importance
Crystal structure determinations, however, not meeting those criteria could be published in the journal: Zeitschrift für Kristallographie – New Crystal Structures.
English is the only publication language.
Contributions about Organic and Metalorganic Crystal Structures should include a formulae diagram which will appear in the list of contents.
Letters
The articles should represent novel and original contributions to current problems in crystallography. They may also report significant preliminary results on condition that they are of sufficient interest to merit rapid publication. The manuscripts should be no longer than about six pages typed in double spacing, and the number of figures and tables should not exceed four. Publication time is two months after acceptance.
Review Articles
Critical reviews are occasionally published in current and rapidly developing research fields. They should be authoritative and comprehensive, serving as an introduction to the corresponding field and as an overview for specialists as well. Submission of manuscripts is, in general, upon invitation. However, suggestions regarding possible topics and authors are welcome.
Original Papers
are reports on new research of general aspects of crystallography, structure and properties of crystalline and non-crystalline materials, structural phase transition, technological aspects and instrumentation.
Discussions
This section is intended to provoke debate on current topics of broad interest which either ask for general or controversial discussion.
Book Reviews
Books related to crystallography are currently reviewed.

Submission of contributions
All manuscripts have to be submitted online at http://www.editorialmanager.com/zkristallogr/default.aspx
After registration you will be guided step by step by the manuscript submission interface through the submission process.
You only have to register once and will receive a password which allows you to track all your contributions.
Authors are asked to prepare their manuscripts using the ZKrist-templates.
The templates support the programs Winword and LaTex. Predefined style formats are available for all the necessary structures to be included in the manuscript. These formats can be quickly accessed using keystroke combinations or the special toolbars provided.

A complete manuscript contains:
- the manuscript title (if the manuscript is part of a series of contributions the first footnote should specify the title of this series, the number of the present contribution, and the citation of the previous one),
- a running title with up to 50 letters for the headline,
- the authors’ names,
- the institute where the work was carried out,
- the name and the full address (incl. e-mail address) of the author who is responsible for all correspondence regarding the contribution,
- three to five keywords
- an Abstract
- a Conclusion
- for the Table of Contents a short summary of max. 250 characters and a figure.
During the refereeing process Editors might ask for
- hkl-, fcf-, ins-data
- CIF- and checkCIF-file.
Footnotes
Footnotes to the text have to be listed on an extra page. In the text they have to be indicated by superscript italic numbers (1, 2, 3...). Footnotes in tables are to be placed directly under the table and indicated in the table by superscript lower case italic letters (a, b, c,...).
Equations
Equations have to be typewritten or clearly handwritten, with an Arabic number (where necessary for reference) placed in parentheses to the right side of equation. References to equations in the text should read: (3).
References
All references have to be listed on a separate page either according to their numbers used in the text or in alphabetical order. They follow the standard rules of citation:

References with more than three authors have to be cited completely in the first citation. Thereafter they can be referred to with → 1st author, et al.
Tables
Tables have to be numbered consecutively with arabic numerals.
Extended tables have to be ready for reproduction. They have to be typed in a compact form with the maximum size of 85 mm in width (= one column) and 250 mm in height including the headline. Tables can occupy two columns only in exceptional cases. Errors in reproduced tables cannot be corrected in the proofs.
Figures
Figures will be accepted either in the
– TIFF-format: resolution at least 300 dpi for digital halftones and 800 dpi for line drawings or
– as vector graphics in the PostScript format (PS, EPS):
fonts should be included and all lines must have a width of at least 0.2 mm (0.567 pt)!
If illustrations cannot be submitted in either of these formats they should then be sent as sharp, high contrast, glossy prints, or original black ink drawings. Half-tone photographs must be originals. All figures, data and hardcopies, should have the final size (usual width ¼ 85 mm)! Letters and numbers may not be smaller than 2 mm. Figure captions have to be listed on separate sheets.
Color printing is possible if necessary and free of charge.
International System of Units/IUPAC
The International System of Units (SI, Système International d’Unite´s) is to be used wherever possible. Other units may be explained in parentheses when they first appear in the text. The nomenclature should follow the IUPAC-rules.
Depositing of Data
Structure-factor lists will not be published, except when they are used for a substantial discussion. The authors are asked to keep those lists until one year after publication in case they are requested.
Additional material especially unpublished data should be
deposited
with a database:
Data of organic and metal-organic structures should be sent by e-mail to the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre (CCDC). The preferred mode of deposition is a standard ASCII file. Wherever possible the CIF format should be used but other formats will be accepted as well. Data can also be deposited as a hard-copy. A checklist of data items for deposition can be obtained from the CCDC Home Page on the World Wide Web (http://www.ccdc.cam.ac.uk) or by e-mail (fileserv@ccdc.cam.ac.uk) with the one-line message “send me checklist“.

The crystallographic data associated with inorganic structures should be deposited with the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe. FIZ accepts the data deposited in electronic form only (preferrably in CIF format). Deposition guidelines and example files can be obtained on the WWW

Open Access
Authors of accepted and peer-reviewed contributions can choose to make their published articles free accessible. The article will be listed under “Open Access Articles” on the Zkrist Homepage.

Corrections are to be restricted to typographical errors. Any other changes involve time-consuming and expensive work, and the costs will be charged to the author(s).
