Guide for Authors

Science & Justice is the official publication of The Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences which was founded, in 1959, with the objectives of advancing the study, application and standing of forensic science, and facilitating co-operation among persons interested in forensic science throughout the world. Science & Justice is published six times a year and will be of primary interest to forensic scientists, forensic practitioners and crime scene investigators, legal professionals and their colleagues in related fields. It is chiefly concerned with the publication of formal scientific papers, in keeping with its international learned status, but will not accept any article that does not comply with strict ethical and legal standards.

Types of article

The Editor welcomes original, high quality contributions in English on any aspect of forensic and crime science, as outlined in the journal's aims and scope. Science & Justice welcomes submissions of the following article types:

- Original Research Papers (Regular Papers)

- Review Articles

- Short Communications

- Technical Notes

- Case Studies

- Professional Practice Reports

- Rapid Communications

- Commentaries

- Correspondence

Original Research Papers (Regular Papers) are full-length research articles and present the outcomes of original and methodologically sound scientific investigations that have been previously unpublished. These papers are peer reviewed and non-exclusively assessed for the strength of their experimental design, full details of ethical approval and legal conformance (where appropriate), their data-based interpretations, discussions and conclusions in the context of previously published literature and professional practice, and the potential impact of the paper across the world.

Review Articles provide a detailed, critical review of a specific subject that falls within the scope of the Science & Justice journal. Review articles are backed up by a full reference list and explore all aspects of the subject. Review articles may be regularly submitted or invited by the journal's Editors and are subject to the normal peer review process for the journal.

Short Communications are the preferred article type for the submission of original and important research, such as preliminary observations, perspectives or data that does not warrant publication as a Regular Paper. Short communications should typically be no more than 3000 words in length and must provide sufficient information for Science & Justice's standard peer review process to be completed.

Technical Notes describe technical aspects of a problem or discipline, report on new or modified methods or procedures, validate or present new results from techniques or methodologies. Technical notes must clearly state their relevance within the scope of Science & Justice and should be shorter than Regular Papers, usually no more than 3000 words in length. Highly detailed and specific technical information such as computer programme code, guidance documents or user manuals can be included as supplementary material.

Case Studies contain important and relevant background information to explain the case in sufficient detail for the reader and peer reviewers. Case studies should examine and critically evaluate what happened in the case to identify new or important learning outcomes that will enhance the knowledge or understanding of the readers and be of significant benefit to future casework. The current status of the case, or the case outcome(s) should be included, where relevant. Case studies will undergo the usual peer review process for the Science & Justice journal.

Professional Practice Reports describe the innovative application of professional practice initiatives as they pertain to forensic and crime science practice, education, training and research. Reports that highlight important lessons to be learnt are strongly encouraged. Topics could include: collaborative work between professions that improve investigative or criminal justice outcomes; development and implementation of forensic and crime scene quality standards; the impact of procedural, policy or cultural change on employees within operational forensic or policing environments, and more.

Rapid Communications should describe work of significant interest, whose impact would suffer if publication were not expedited. They should not be longer than 10 submitted pages. Authors may suggest that their work is treated as a Rapid Communication, but the final decision on whether it is suitable as such will be taken by the handling Editor.

Commentaries are designed to allow experts from across the criminal justice sector to present their view on a 'hot topic' or emerging field in the forensic and crime sciences. Commentaries should be 1000-1500 words and contain fewer than 5 references. Authors may suggest that their work is treated as a Commentary, but the final decision on whether it is suitable as such will be taken by the handling Editor. Articles in this section may not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of the editorial team or the Council of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.

Correspondence papers are reserved for responses to previously published papers or original data in the journal. The original author will be given the opportunity to comment and respond to any correspondence regarding their previously published manuscript. Correspondence pieces must not contain Highlights or an Abstract.

Sections of Science and Justice

To accommodate a range of articles of interest to members and other readers, each issue may contain material which may be categorised under the following section headings:

1. Professional Articles: on matters of a professional nature including case studies/reports, professional practice reports, non-technical reviews, commentaries, essays, legal comment, the investigative sciences, and any items concerned with the professional standing of expert witnesses.

2. Scientific and Technical Articles: regular papers, technical notes and reviews, short and rapid communications or articles in which there is a clear novel experimental or interpretative content. These may cover the areas of criminal justice, criminal law and forensic science disciplines including, but not limited to, crime scene and vehicle collision investigation, forensic archaeology and anthropology, forensic biology, forensic genetics and pathology, forensic chemistry and toxicology, statistics, criminalistics and physical sciences, digital forensics, environmental forensics and wildlife crime, or any subject matter deemed acceptable under this heading by the Honorary Editor.

3. Proceedings: intended for the rapid publication of comprehensive summaries or the edited texts of papers read at scientific meetings of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.

4. Society News: intended for the activities of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences of a more formal nature than that reported in the Society's newsletter.

5. Editorial: intended as a platform for the Editor and for others with a keen interest in forensic science who wish to comment on current affairs.

6. Other features that appear frequently, although not necessarily in every issue, are book reviews and abstracts.

Authors are asked to specify in their submission covering letter to the Editor, which of the above sections of Science & Justice they wish their manuscript to be considered. Authors should aim to make their manuscripts comprehensible to the majority of Science & Justice's international readers, bearing in mind that this majority will not be specialists in the author's particular field. Those intending to submit manuscripts for publication in Science & Justice are advised to study carefully the following instructions. We promote the use of inclusive neutral language and the consistent use of either American or British English (but not both) throughout your manuscript. Articles are published on the understanding that publication is not taken to imply endorsement of the views therein by either the Editor or the Council of the Chartered Society of Forensic Sciences.

While the Editor may seek the opinion of a referee on any article submitted, it is editorial policy that all manuscripts submitted for publication in the Professional and Scientific and Technical sections are subject to peer review by at least two referees, who remain anonymous. Although referees are sent the manuscript without the title page, authors should recognise that their identity may be obvious from reading the manuscript. Therefore, authors must anonymise and redact any information within the main manuscript that may identify them, for example when referring to their prior research and publication(s).

All references mentioned in the Reference List are cited in the text, and vice versa

Evidence of consent and compliance with ethical and legal standards is provided, with reference to protocol approval from an institutional ethical review committee

Permission has been obtained for use of copyrighted material from other sources (including the Internet)

A competing interests statement is provided, even if the authors have no competing interests to declare

Journal policies detailed in this guide have been reviewed

The name, email address and a brief supporting justification for at least two independent expert reviewers, who are not from the first or corresponding authors? home country, must be provided with your submission based on article type and journal requirements

A covering letter written by the corresponding author to the Editor-in-Chief accompanies your submission

Declaration of Interest

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organisations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work. Examples of potential competing interests include employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria, paid expert testimony, patent applications/registrations, and grants or other funding. Authors must disclose any interests in two places: 1. A summary declaration of interest statement in the title page file (if double anonymised) or the manuscript file (if single anonymised). If there are no interests to declare then please state this: 'Declarations of interest: none'. This summary statement will be ultimately published if the article is accepted. 2. Detailed disclosures as part of a separate Declaration of Interest form, which forms part of the journal's official records. It is important for potential interests to be declared in both places and that the information matches. More information.

Additional information

This does not preclude consideration of a complete report that follows publication of preliminary findings or of a manuscript where an abstract or report was published previously in the Society News section.

Submission declaration and verification

Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract, a published lecture or academic thesis, see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, including electronically without the written consent of the copyright-holder. To verify originality, your article may be checked by the originality detection service Crossref Similarity Check.

Preprints

Please note that preprints can be shared anywhere at any time, in line with Elsevier's sharing policy. Sharing your preprints e.g. on a preprint server will not count as prior publication (see 'Multiple, redundant or concurrent publication' for more information).

Use of inclusive language

Inclusive language acknowledges diversity, conveys respect to all people, is sensitive to differences, and promotes equal opportunities. Content should make no assumptions about the beliefs or commitments of any reader; contain nothing which might imply that one individual is superior to another on the grounds of age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition; and use inclusive language throughout. Authors should ensure that writing is free from bias, stereotypes, slang, reference to dominant culture and/or cultural assumptions. We advise to seek gender neutrality by using plural nouns ("clinicians, patients/clients") as default/wherever possible to avoid using "he, she," or "he/she." We recommend avoiding the use of descriptors that refer to personal attributes such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, culture, sexual orientation, disability or health condition unless they are relevant and valid. These guidelines are meant as a point of reference to help identify appropriate language but are by no means exhaustive or definitive.

Author contributions

For transparency, we encourage authors to submit an author statement file outlining their individual contributions to the paper using the relevant CRediT roles: Conceptualisation; Data curation; Formal analysis; Funding acquisition; Investigation; Methodology; Project administration; Resources; Software; Supervision; Validation; Visualisation; Roles/Writing - original draft; Writing - review & editing. Authorship

All authors should have made substantial contributions to all of the following: (1) the conception and design of the study, or acquisition of data, or analysis and interpretation of data, (2) drafting the article or revising it critically for important intellectual content, (3) final approval of the version to be submitted.

Changes to authorship

Authors are expected to consider carefully the list and order of authors before submitting their manuscript and provide the definitive list of authors at the time of the original submission. Any addition, deletion or rearrangement of author names in the authorship list should be made only before the manuscript has been accepted and only if approved by the journal Editor. To request such a change, the Editor must receive the following from the corresponding author: (a) the reason for the change in author list and (b) written confirmation (e-mail, letter) from all authors that they agree with the addition, removal or rearrangement. In the case of addition or removal of authors, this includes confirmation from the author being added or removed.

Only in exceptional circumstances will the Editor consider the addition, deletion or rearrangement of authors after the manuscript has been accepted. While the Editor considers the request, publication of the manuscript will be suspended. If the manuscript has already been published in an online issue, any requests approved by the Editor will result in a corrigendum.

Article transfer service

This journal is part of our Article Transfer Service. This means that if the Editor feels your article is more suitable in one of our other participating journals, then you may be asked to consider transferring the article to one of those. If you agree, your article will be transferred automatically on your behalf with no need to reformat. Please note that your article will be reviewed again by the new journal and you may be asked by the Editor-in-Chief or handling Editor to make changes to the submission before it is sent for peer review as the readership of the journal may differ significantly.More information.

Copyright

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to complete a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' (see more information on this). An e-mail will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' form or a link to the online version of this agreement.

Subscribers may reproduce tables of contents or prepare lists of articles including abstracts for internal circulation within their institutions. Permission of the Publisher is required for resale or distribution outside the institution and for all other derivative works, including compilations and translations. If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases.

For gold open access articles: Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to complete a 'License Agreement' (more information). Permitted third party reuse of gold open access articles is determined by the author's choice of user license.

Language (usage and editing services)

Please write your text in good English (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of these). Authors who feel their English language manuscript may require editing to eliminate possible grammatical or spelling errors and to conform to correct scientific English may wish to use the English Language Editing service available from Elsevier's Author Services.

The system converts your article files to a single PDF file used in the peer-review process. Editable files (e.g., Word, LaTeX) are required to typeset your article for final publication. Please submit the names and institutional e-mail addresses of at least two potential referees from different countries. For more details, visit our Support site. Note that the Editor retains the sole right to decide whether or not the suggested reviewers are used.

Additional information

All submissions must be accompanied by a covering letter from the author who is to be responsible for correspondence about the manuscript. The covering letter should contain a statement that the manuscript has been seen and approved by all authors and by any person whose aid has been acknowledged. Authors working within an organisation where approval to publish is required should show in the covering letter that such approval has been obtained. Also included should be copies of any permission required to reproduce published material or recognisable photographs of individuals. Where the paper describes work done with material donated by volunteers or experimental work involving volunteer subjects the paper must include a statement indicating that the study protocol has been approved by a properly constituted Research Ethics Committee. The only exception will be where authors of the paper have used samples donated by themselves for the study. A statement regarding the compliance with legal standards must also be included where relevant.

Manuscripts prepared according to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals are acceptable, with the exception that in citations the journal title should be given in full and not abbreviated.
