MOLECULAR ECOLOGY RESOURCES

1. SUBMISSION

Authors should note that submission implies that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in the proceedings of a scientific meeting or symposium.

Once the submission materials have been prepared in accordance with the Author Guidelines, manuscripts should be submitted online at https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mer

The submission system will prompt authors to use an ORCID iD (a unique author identifier) to help distinguish their work from that of other researchers. Click here to find out more.

 Conflict of Interest Statement

Upon submission, authors will be asked to affirm a conflict of interest statement.  For guidance, see the Conflict of Interest section in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section below. Authors should ensure they liaise with all co-authors to confirm agreement with the statement.

Click here for more details on how to use the ScholarOne submission database.

For help with submissions, please contact: molecol@wiley.com

Presubmission Enquiries: We will consider presubmission enquiries for unsolicited review papers. Authors wishing to submit such manuscripts should contact the Managing Editor in advance: manager.molecol@wiley.com. For all other article types, authors are encouraged to submit their manuscript to our submission system (https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/mer) so that it can be fully considered for review.

N.B. Molecular Ecology Resources employs a plagiarism detection system. By submitting your manuscript you accept that it may be screened for plagiarism against previously published works.

2. AIMS AND SCOPE

Molecular Ecology Resources encourages development of broad resources for the community including computer programs, statistical and molecular advances, and extensive molecular tools.  The journal is a vehicle for dissemination of these resources, targeting a wide audience of researchers in the fields of evolution, ecology, and conservation.  Articles in Molecular Ecology Resources are intended to facilitate studies addressing consequential questions in these fields.

In addition to novel resource articles, Molecular Ecology Resources publishes relevant Reviews, Opinions, and Comments.  The journal also publishes occasional Special Issues that emphasize development of resources in a particular area.

Papers that report on empirical research in ecology, evolution, behavior, and conservation, rather than new resources and tools, should be submitted to our companion journal, Molecular Ecology.

Papers that are primarily descriptive and relevant only to the taxon being studied without addressing a question more broadly applicable in ecology are not appropriate for Molecular Ecology and should instead be submitted to a more specialized journal or to Ecology & Evolution.

Authors, please include a statement in your Cover Letter describing how your work fits the Aims and Scope of Molecular Ecology Resources.

Molecular Ecology Resources evolves as the available technology and resources evolve.  For this reason, manuscripts which were once accepted may not currently be accepted.  You will find further guidance here:

Empirical Work   Molecular Ecology Resources does not publish empirical research.  Please submit to Molecular Ecology, or, if primarily descriptive, to Ecology & Evolution.

Species-Specific Resources  Molecular Ecology Resources does not publish material pertinent only to one or a few species.  Please submit to Ecology & Evolution or to a species-specific journal.

New Primer Reports (Primer Notes)  Molecular Ecology Resources no longer publishes new primer reports.  Please submit to Ecology & Evolution or to a species-specific journal.

Genomic Resources Notes (GR Notes) Molecular Ecology Resources no longer publishes GR Notes.  Please prepare the material as a regular manuscript for Ecology & Evolution or a species-specific journal.

Barcoding/Metabarcoding/eDNA

Molecular Ecology Resources aims to publish high quality resources to monitor biodiversity with approaches such as barcoding/metabarcoding/eDNA. This includes new approaches to sample eDNA or generate/analyze metabarcoding data.

Articles in these subject areas are expected to be broad resources for the molecular ecology community, while narrow or descriptive applications should be submitted to another journal.

Barcoding studies must conform to established barcoding protocols, such as those available from the Consortium for the Barcode of Life or the Canadian Centre for DNA Barcoding.

Barcoding studies that are preferred for the journal will include the following: a large number of species representing taxa at multiple levels;  characterization of within-species diversity (e.g., multiple individuals per species are barcoded); and multi-gene barcoding of standard barcoding markers (e.g., mtDNA) and nuclear DNA markers.

Studies in areas of barcoding/metabarcoding/eDNA are expected to follow best practices that have been established in published literature.

Microsatellite Reports  Molecular Ecology Resources no longer publishes new microsatellite reports.  Please submit to Ecology & Evolution or to a species-specific journal.

Transcriptomes   Molecular Ecology Resources no longer publishes new transcriptomes.  Please submit to Ecology & Evolution or to a species-specific journal.
