Aims and scope

BMC Chemistry, formerly known as Chemistry Central Journal, is an open access, peer reviewed journal that publishes in the diverse field of chemistry, ranging from organic, inorganic and physical chemistry to medicinal and analytical contributions, as well as articles covering chemistry in the fields of environment and energy, materials and macromolecules, agriculture and food, and green and sustainable processes.

We are committed to supporting the community by welcoming content that evaluates fundamental concepts, highlights new developments, and promotes the application of chemical sciences in a broad range of research areas and industries. By providing an inclusive platform, we want to aid the advancement of chemical sciences and all associated research disciplines.

BMC Chemistry considers submissions on food and agricultural chemistry including the chemistry, biochemistry and bioactivity of foods, enzyme properties and applications, food analysis, processing and storage, flavors and aromas, nutritional chemistry, food safety and toxicology, and chemical and biochemical applications in agricultural science and technology.

We also welcome submissions covering analytical chemistry, such as spectroscopy, crystallography, chromatography, imaging, chemometrics, data processing, and electrochemistry.

Submissions on all areas of environmental and energy chemistry including environmental monitoring, modelling and analysis, chemoecology, energy and fuels, industrial and specialty chemicals, and chemical engineering are also welcome.

Another area of research we consider is green and sustainable chemistry, which includes green routes to the synthesis of compounds and materials, catalysis and biocatalysis that lead to sustainable processes, biomass conversion, biofuels, biorefineries, green metrics, microwave and ultrasonic-assisted reactions, improvements in energy efficiency and nanotechnology that enhances the sustainability aspects of chemical processes.

Submissions on inorganic chemistry topics, may covers bioinorganic chemistry, main group inorganic chemistry, transition metal chemistry, physical inorganic chemistry, organometallic chemistry, crystallography, solid state chemistry, photoredox catalysis, photocatalysis, electrochemistry and electrocatalysis, electro-synthesis, small molecule activation catalysis, water splitting, CO2 reduction and battery chemistry.

In addition, articles on the chemistry of materials and macromolecular chemistry are welcome, including properties, applications and development of materials and polymers, nanotechnology, liquid crystals, surfaces and interfaces and biomacromolecular and supramolecular chemistry.

We publish articles from all areas of medicinal chemistry including drug discovery, QSAR studies and applications, pharmacokinetics, design, synthesis, and evaluation of biologically active compounds, prodrugs, diagnostic agents and other pharmacological tools, structural and molecular biological studies and computational methods and applications in medicinal chemistry.

We welcome submissions from the organic chemistry field reporting on organic synthesis, bioorganic chemistry, physical organic chemistry, stereochemistry, structure-activity relationships, synthetic methods, organometallic chemistry, and natural product chemistry.

Physical chemistry is another area covered by BMC Chemistry, considering articles on catalysis, chemical kinetics, chemical physics, thermodynamics, quantum chemistry, surfaces and interfaces, electrochemistry, and photochemistry.

Fees and funding

Article-processing charges

Open access publishing is not without costs. BMC Chemistry therefore levies an article-processing charge of £1790.00/$2490.00/€2090.00 for each article accepted for publication, plus VAT or local taxes where applicable.

If the corresponding author's institution participates in our open access membership program, some or all of the publication cost may be covered (more details available on the membership page). We routinely waive charges for authors from low-income countries. For other countries, article-processing charge waivers or discounts are granted on a case-by-case basis to authors with insufficient funds. Authors can request a waiver or discount during the submission process. For further details, see our article-processing charge page.

Visit Springer Nature’s open access funding & support services for information about research funders and institutions that provide funding for APCs.

Springer Nature offers agreements that enable institutions to cover open access publishing costs. Learn more about our open access agreements to check your eligibility and discover whether this journal is included.
