About the Journal
Soft Robotics is a peer-reviewed journal dedicated to the innovation of engineering and technology for the design and use of soft materials in mobile machines. The Journal breaks new ground as the first to address this emerging, widely recognized, and increasingly adopted area of research, design, and development. It is a journal for research into the urgent need for robots that can safely interact with living systems and function in complex natural, or human-built, environments.
The Journal covers topics related to device development in these fields, such as soft material creation, characterization, and modeling; flexible and degradable electronics; soft actuators and sensors; control and simulation of highly deformable structures; biomechanics and control of soft animals and tissues; biohybrid devices and living machines; and design and fabrication of conformable machines. Soft Robotics is a multidisciplinary approach that will incorporate biomaterials, neuromechanical controllers, and evolutionary concepts into the successful design of novel machines.
Manuscript Types and Guidelines
Original Research Articles
4,000-word limit
Unstructured abstract of no more than 250 words
Maximum of ten (10) figures
Maximum of eight (8) tables
Review Articles
4,000-word limit
Unstructured abstract of no more than 100 words (state the subject of the review and its importance; summarize the most important points of the review)
Maximum of ten (10) figures
Maximum of eight (8) tables
Perspective Articles
4,000-word limit
Unstructured abstract of no more than 250 words
Maximum of two (2) figures and/or tables
Brief Communications
2,000-word limit (The format for the text may vary depending upon the nature of the report)
Unstructured abstract of no more than 100 words (outline the purpose, methodology, and results of the communication)
Maximum of two (2) figures and/or tables
Letters to the Editor
500-word limit
May include one figure OR table
Reference citations are identical in style to those of full original articles, but should not exceed five (5).
Other communications
Potential news items are also welcome but are subject to review by the editorial board or standard peer review.
Word limits do NOT pertain to the abstract, disclosure statements, author contribution statements, funding information, acknowledgments, tables, figure legends, or references.
References
References must be prepared in Word, double-spaced, and numbered consecutively as they are cited in the text (using superscript numbers).
Reference citations are not permitted in the abstract of an article.
Include the reference section as part of the main text file, not as a separate file. References appearing for the first time in tables and figures must be numbered in sequence with those cited in the text where the table or figure is mentioned. Use journal abbreviations as provided by PubMed/Medline. List the first three authors, followed by et al. (not italicized).
If references to personal communications or unpublished data are used, they are not to be in the list of references. They should be referred to in the text in parentheses: (AB Jones, personal communication). Written permission must be obtained from the author of any unpublished material cited from other institutions and should accompany the manuscript. Include among the references any articles that have been accepted but have not yet published; identify the name of publication and add "In Press." If the reference has been published online, provide the DOI number in place of the page range. If it is necessary to cite an abstract, this should be so designated.
