IEEE Software Author Information
IEEE Software is looking for practitioner-focused articles, columns, and special-issue proposals. Summaries of works in progress, what worked for you, and what didn’t are most welcome, as are tutorials and articles accompanied by Web-based demos. Full articles are peer-reviewed and are typically six to seven magazine pages long. Columns are reviewed by department editors only and are typically two pages long.
Articles should be understandable to a broad audience of people interested in software development. The writing should be down to earth, practical, and original. Authors should not assume that the audience will have specialized experience in a particular subfield, and all accepted articles will be edited according to the IEEE Computer Society style guide. Consider providing background materials in sidebars for nonexpert readers.
Peer-Reviewed Articles
Articles should be no more than:
3,000 words for special-issue papers.
4,200 words for regular papers.
Each figure and table counts as 250 words. Articles should have a maximum of 15 references. The abstract should be no more than 150 words and should describe the overall focus of your manuscript. With your submission, provide three actionable insights in bullet-list format that software practitioners will get from your paper.
Articles should be accompanied by an author photo, as well as a short biographical sketch. It should contain, in the following order, your current position and technical interests, prior applicable professional experience, education, professional affiliations, and address.
To gauge the suitability of an article that you are planning to submit to IEEE Software, you may send your abstract to the editor in chief at ipek.ozkaya@computer.org.
Before submitting, please read our author guidelines. When you are ready to submit, please go to https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/sw-cs.

Open Access
This magazine is a hybrid publication, allowing either traditional manuscript submission or author-paid Open Access (OA) manuscript submission.
The OA option, if selected, enables unrestricted public access to the article via IEEE Xplore and the Computer Society Digital Library with payment of the current Article Processing Charge (APC). The OA option will be offered to the author at the time the manuscript is submitted and the APC must be paid before the article is published in the magazine. Note that authors will receive an email from CCC-Rightslink, our APC vendor, asking for payment. Please visit the IEEE Open Access FAQs for further details. Authors seeking an APC waiver should submit substantiated evidence and documentation to pubs-waivers@computer.org. Corresponding authors from low-income countries are eligible for waived or reduced open access APCs.
The traditional option, if selected, enables access to all qualified subscribers and purchasers via IEEE Xplore and the Computer Society Digital Library. No OA payment is required.
