Frequently Asked Questions

A complete list of general journal Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) can be found at: http://www.springer.com/gp/authors-editors/journal-author/frequently-asked-questions/3832

Time to First Decision: From submission to first decision, the journal aims to provide authors with a quick decision. Reviewers are given a tight deadline to review the manuscript. In most cases, the decision is made in less than three months. The timing can fluctuate depending upon several variables: the length of your article, the availability of reviewers if the topic is narrow, and the depth of reviewing necessary if the manuscript is lacking straightforward components, such as suitable references. Clear and concise language and presentation will help editors and reviewers concentrate on the scientific content of your paper and thus smooth the peer review process. NOTE: special issues of the journal are given an option to adapt a different schedule for decisions. Check the Call for Papers for specific schedules.

Time to Publication: Once an article is accepted, the files are immediately provided to the production department for processing. Assuming proofs are returned quickly, the article should be published online (the official version) within 3-5 weeks.

Article DOI: Once your article is proofed, it is immediately published online, which is the publication of record. The assigned Digital Object Identifier (DOI) can be used for citations until the article is assigned to a Volume/Issue/Page Number. NOTE: Once the article is published online, no further changes can be made.

Scope: If you have questions about the scope and suitability of your article, the Editor-in-Chief will need to view the entire manuscript to make this determination. Please submit via our Editorial Manager tool. Choose “Aims and Scope” from the right-hand side bar to read further about the content of the journal. Then choose “Submit Online” to visit the Editorial Manager site. You will have an option enter any specific comments/questions regarding your manuscript.

MSWord: The journal does not provide MsWord templates for your manuscript. Please consult each section of the Instructions for Authors to ensure all components of your article have been properly included (references, table, figures, etc). If accepted, your article will be formatted by our production team.

Article Charges: The journal does not charge a submission fee or publication fee. If your article is accepted for publication, it will be published without incurring any cost to the authors. However, authors are offered the option to publish your accepted article as Open Access. You will be provided with the details to this option after acceptance. Selecting the Open Access option will require an Article Processing Fee from either the author or his member institution. Please note color art is free of charge for the online publication.

Journal Policy

1. Theory of Computing Systems (TOCS) publishes original research. It is the policy of TOCS that no submission, or substantially overlapping submission, be previously published or be under review at another journal or conference at any time during the review process. Papers extending previously published conference papers may be submitted to TOCS for possible publication, as long as the journal submission clearly discloses the similarities/differences, and the conference paper is cited in the submission (for example, in a section on related work). It is also authors' responsibility to obtain and properly disclose permissions for any previously published material.

2. Resubmissions of previously rejected manuscripts are not permitted. Exceptions are permitted only on invitation of the Editor-in-Chief.

3. No author may submit more than one paper in any one year claiming to settle the question of whether P is the same as NP, or making similar such claims.

Manuscript Submission

Submission of a manuscript implies: that the work described has not been published before; that it is not under consideration for publication anywhere else; that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, if any, as well as by the responsible authorities – tacitly or explicitly – at the institute where the work has been carried out. The publisher will not be held legally responsible should there be any claims for compensation.

Permissions

Authors wishing to include figures, tables, or text passages that have already been published elsewhere are required to obtain permission from the copyright owner(s) for both the print and online format and to include evidence that such permission has been granted when submitting their papers. Any material received without such evidence will be assumed to originate from the authors.

Online Submission

Please follow the hyperlink “Submit manuscript” on the right and upload all of your manuscript files following the instructions given on the screen.

Please ensure you provide all relevant editable source files. Failing to submit these source files might cause unnecessary delays in the review and production process.

Title Page

Please make sure your title page contains the following information.

For authors that are (temporarily) unaffiliated we will only capture their city and country of residence, not their e-mail address unless specifically requested.

Abstract

Please provide an abstract of 150 to 250 words. The abstract should not contain any undefined abbreviations or unspecified references.

Statements and Declarations

The following statements should be included under the heading "Statements and Declarations" for inclusion in the published paper. Please note that submissions that do not include relevant declarations will be returned as incomplete.

Competing Interests: Authors are required to disclose financial or non-financial interests that are directly or indirectly related to the work submitted for publication. Please refer to “Competing Interests and Funding” below for more information on how to complete this section.
