Author Guidelines
1. SUBMISSION
Authors should note that submission implies that the content has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere except as a brief abstract in the proceedings of a scientific meeting or symposium.
Submissions must be made online through ScholarOne by logging in on the homepage: http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/anzjog
Paper manuscripts and email submissions are not accepted.
Manuscripts that do not adhere to the Author Guidelines will be returned to the corresponding author for technical revision.

If the submitted version of the manuscript was posted to a preprint server, the submitting author will be required to indicate this during the submission process and provide the preprint DOI (or URL if no DOI was issued). This information must also be included in the Acknowledgements statement.
You are requested to update any pre-publication versions with a link to the final published article.
2. AIMS AND SCOPE
The Australia and New Zealand Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ANZJOG) is an editorially independent publication owned by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RANZCOG).
ANZJOG aims to provide a medium for the publication of original contributions to clinical practice and/or research in all fields of obstetrics and gynaecology and related disciplines.
3. MANUSCRIPT CATEGORIES AND REQUIREMENTS
ANZJOG publishes Current Controversies, Editorials, Letters to the Editor, Opinions, Original Manuscripts, Position Papers, Reviews and Short Communications. From 2019 ANZJOG will also publish RANZCOG College Statements (in the e-pages of the journal).
Occasionally abstracts from the RANZCOG Annual Scientific Meeting, or meetings of relevant special interest groups, will be published where the accepted abstracts have undergone a suitable peer review acceptance process.
Please be aware that additional requirements for every manuscript type are provided in ‘Section 4. Preparing the Submission’ below and must be observed.
Original Articles. Original Articles present new insights into the fields of obstetrics, gynaecology or a related discipline. These manuscripts should:
i. Not exceed 2500 words in length (excluding the abstract, reference list and tables)
ii. Be structed under the following headings: Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, References (with appropriate subheadings at the author’s discretion)
a. Concluding statements should be incorporated into the Discussion with no separate Conclusion
iii. Include an abstract of not more than 250 words, structured under the following subheadings: Background / Aims / Materials and Methods / Results / Conclusions
iv. Include five MeSH keywords
v. Contain no more than a total of four tables or figures
vi. Cite not more than 30 references
Original Manuscripts that report a clinical trial must additionally:
Include the following randomised controlled trial (RCT) information as provided by a public clinical trials registry (eg. www.anzctr.org.au and www.clinicaltrials.gov), in both the Abstract and Materials and Methods section of the manuscript:
i. Trial registration number
ii. URL for the registered trial
iii. Name of the clinical trial registry
iv. Date the trail was registered
v. Date recruitment for the study commenced
a. Registration with a public clinical trials registry should be completed prior to participant recruitment commencing
vi. Be written (main manuscript and abstract) in accordance with the CONSORT Statement, including submission of a completed:
a. CONSORT Checklist
b. CONSORT Flow Diagram
Please note: ANZJOG’s emphasis is on human clinical studies rather than animal research. Very few articles pertaining only to animal research are published in the journal. Authors submitting material based on animal research are advised to provide clear linkage to the clinical implications of their data in the Introduction and/or Discussion.
Registered Reports. A new form of empirical article in which the Protocol (methods and proposed analyses) are pre-submitted and reviewed prior to the research being conducted. Registered Reports are submitted and published in two parts; acceptance and publication of the Protocol (Part 1) presupposes eventual submission, review, and publication of the Full Manuscript (Part 2). Authors should carefully read the Registered Reports for ANZJOG: A Guide for Authors for full details.
Reviews. The journal publishes high-quality review material covering both research and practice. Reviews are usually by invitation of the editorial board, but suggestions are welcomed. These manuscripts are considered in two categories:
i. Systematic reviews. Systematic reviews will be considered as Original Manuscripts. Authors should consider PRISMA Statement. These manuscripts should:
a.Not exceed 3500 words in length (excluding the abstract, reference list and tables)
b. Include an abstract of not more than 250 words, structured under the following subheadings: Background / Aims / Materials and Methods / Results / Conclusions
c. Include five MeSH keywords
d. Contain no more than a total of four tables or figures
e. Cite not more than 100 references
ii. Short Reviews. Short Reviews will deal with topics that are part of a larger subject or are a specialised area of obstetric or gynaecological practice. These manuscripts should:
a. Not exceed 1500 words in length (excluding the abstract, reference list and tables)
b. Include an unstructured abstract of not more than 100 words
c. Include five MeSH keywords
d. Contain no more than a total of two tables or figures
e. Cite not more than 20 references
Short Communications. Short Communications May be original research or evidence-based opinion. In general, the content of the manuscript will be less substantial than that of an original research article but will nevertheless be novel. These manuscripts should:
i. Be between 1000 and 1500 words in length (excluding the abstract, reference list and tables)
ii. Include an unstructured abstract of not more than 100 words
iii. Include five MeSH keywords
iv. Contain no more than a total of two tables or figures
v. Cite not more than 20 references
Letters to the Editor. Letters to the Editor are short, relevant comments on medical and scientific issues, particularly controversies. These manuscripts should:
i. Not exceed 500 words in length
ii. Not include an abstract or keywords
iii. Where letters refer to an article previously published in ANZJOG, the author must include the previously published article as a citation, usually the first.
Clinical Perspectives. Clinical Perspectives are practical updates on the management of major medical disorders. These manuscripts should:
i. Not exceed 2000 words in length (excluding the abstract, reference list and tables)
ii. Include an unstructured abstract of not more than 100 words
iii. Include five MeSH keywords
iv. Contain no more than a total of four tables or figures
v. Cite not more than 20 references
Editorials. Editorial may be invited by the Editorial Board or unsolicited. These manuscripts should:
i. Not exceed 2000 words in length
ii. Not include an abstract or keywords
iii. Cite not more than 20 references
Current Controversies. In general, two differing viewpoints on a current controversy will be published in the one issue of ANZJOG, at the invitation of the Editor. These manuscripts should:
i. Not exceed 1500 words in length (excluding the reference list)
ii. Not include an abstract or keywords
iii. Cite not more than 20 references
Opinions. These should be well-argued, stand-alone manuscripts that deal with topics of clinical or research interest in obstetrics and gynaecology. These manuscripts should:
i. Not exceed 1500 words in length (excluding the reference list)
ii. Include an unstructured abstract of not more than 100 words
iii. Include five MeSH keywords
iv. Cite not more than 20 references
Position Papers. Position Papers look at major management issues and are to be authored by authoritative specialist societies or professional bodies. Authors representing groups who wish to publish a Position Paper should consult the Editorial Office prior to submission. These manuscripts must take one of two forms:
i. A condensed version or extract of a larger published statement. These manuscripts should:
a. Not exceed 1500 words in length (excluding the abstract, reference list, tables)
b. Include an unstructured abstract of not more than 100 words
c. Include five MeSH keywords
d. Cite not more than 20 references
ii. A guideline or statement in full. These manuscripts should:
a. Not exceed 3500 words in length (excluding the abstract, reference list, tables)
b. Include an unstructured abstract of not more than 100 words
c. Include five MeSH keywords
d. Cite not more than 100 references
e. Provide specific supporting information as an explanatory note after each recommendation, rather than in a separate background statement.
4. PREPARING THE SUBMISSION
Cover Letter
A cover letter is required with every submission.
The cover letter must:
i. Include the title of the submission
ii. Include the name of each author
iii. Where there are more than four authors, include a statement regarding the contribution of each author to the intellectual planning of the project, carrying out of the experimental work, intellectual analysis of the data, and writing of the manuscript. Please refer to the journal’s Authorship policy in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section for details on author listing eligibility
iv. Acknowlege that the manuscript is an original work and has been submitted solely to ANZJOG
v. Be signed by all authors and uploaded as a PDF file. Manuscripts with unsigned cover letters will not be accepted.
Parts of the Manuscript
The manuscript should be submitted in separate files: title page; main text file; figures.
Title Page
The title page should contain:
v. A short informative title containing the major key words. The title should not contain abbreviations (see Wiley's best practice search engine optimisation tips)
vi. A short running title of less than 50 characters (including spaces; acronyms acceptable)
vii. The full name of every author (surnames in upper case letters). Please refer to the journal’s Authorship policy in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section for details on author listing eligibility.
viii. The author's institutional affiliations where the work was conducted (position title, department, institution, email address, city, country), with a footnote for the author’s present address if different from where the work was conducted
ix. Corresponding author has been highlighted and their ORCID (an ORCID is mandatory for the corresponding author and highly recommended for all authors)
x. Acknowledgments, including:
a. Contributions from anyone who does not meet the criteria for authorship, with permission from the contributor (thanks to anonymous reviewers, support staff or participants are not appropriate)
b. Financial and material support
xi. Conflicts of Interest statement. For details on what to include in this section, see the ‘Conflict of Interest’ section in the Editorial Policies and Ethical Considerations section below. Submitting authors should ensure they liaise with all co-authors to confirm agreement with the final statement
Main Text File
As papers are double-blind peer reviewed, the main text file should not include any information that might identify the authors.
The main text Word file should be presented in the following order:
i. The first page must contain the following and only the following: Title, short running title, key words (if required; see the ‘Manuscript Categories and Requirements’ section), manuscript word count, abstract word count, figure count, table count
ii. The second page should contain only the Abstract (if required; see the ‘Manuscript Categories and Requirements’ section)
iii. Third page onward: Main text, tables (each table complete with title and footnotes); figure legends; references
Figures and supporting information should be supplied as separate files.
Methods and Materials
If a method or tool is introduced in the study, including software, questionnaires, and scales, the author should state the license this is available under and any requirement for permission for use. If an existing method or tool is used in the research, the authors are responsible for checking the license and obtaining the permission. If permission was required, a statement confirming permission should be included in the Methods and Materials section.
