Instructions for authors

About the journal

Hydrological Sciences Journal is an international, peer reviewed journal, publishing high-quality, original research. Please see the journal’s Aims & Scope for information about its focus and peer-review policy.

Please note that this journal only publishes manuscripts in English.

The editors will consider the following manuscript types for publication in Hydrological Sciences Journal (HSJ):

Research Article: Original research that clearly advances our understanding of the hydrological cycle of the Earth in hydrology worldwide. The original and novel components must be clear and include an explanation of the broader research implications that extend beyond the study area, for example, by noting its unique hydroclimatic setting and how knowledge about it could enhance the overall understanding of the hydrological processes or model studied. The article should demonstrate existing knowledge gaps, be motivated by a set of hypotheses, and explain why the approaches and/or application proposed are hypothesized to fill existing knowledge gaps.

Technical Note: Manuscripts in this category report (a) new developments, (b) significant advances and novel aspects of experimental and theoretical methods and techniques, or (c) new insights into previously published and widely used methods or models. A Technical Note should be short; detailed or specific technical information, such as computer code, should be included as supplementary material.

Rapid Communication: This category is limited to manuscripts that report quickly on either a new scientific finding, a new technology, or an ongoing or very recent extraordinary hydrological event (e.g. an extreme drought, or flood), therefore requiring prompt publication.

Opinion Paper: These manuscripts discuss a topical aspect of hydrology that is intended to stimulate debate among peers on new ideas, views, or perceptions in hydrology. Opinion papers are generally by invitation only. If authors have an idea for an opinion paper, they are encouraged to contact the Editor in Chief.

Discussion and Reply to Discussion: A discussion paper discusses work previously published in HSJ, ideally, but not exclusively, no more than 18 months prior to the submission date. The title should include “Discussion of:” followed by the title of the original article. The authors of the original article will be invited to reply to the discussion(s) and should submit this with “Reply to:” in the title. Both discussion and reply will be peer-reviewed, generally by the same associate editor and reviewers as the original article.

Special Issue Paper: These manuscripts are generally classified as Research Articles and are by invitation from the guest editor(s) of a particular Special Issue. For some Special Issues, a Call for Papers will be published, and submissions are solicited from the wider hydrological community.

Review Article: This type of article summarizes and synthesizes the status of knowledge so as to present novel and unreported or underreported insights into future directions of research within the aims and scope of the journal.

Open Access

You have the option to publish open access in this journal via our Open Select publishing program. Publishing open access means that your article will be free to access online immediately on publication, increasing the visibility, readership and impact of your research. Articles published Open Select with Taylor & Francis typically receive 32% more citations* and over 6 times as many downloads** compared to those that are not published Open Select.

Your research funder or your institution may require you to publish your article open access. Visit our Author Services website to find out more about open access policies and how you can comply with these.

You will be asked to pay an article publishing charge (APC) to make your article open access and this cost can often be covered by your institution or funder. Use our APC finder to view the APC for this journal.

Please visit our Author Services website or contact openaccess@tandf.co.uk if you would like more information about our Open Select Program.

*Citations received up to Jan 31st 2020 for articles published in 2015-2019 in journals listed in Web of Science®.

**Usage in 2017-2019 for articles published in 2015-2019.

Peer review

Taylor & Francis is committed to peer-review integrity and upholding the highest standards of review. Once your paper has been assessed for suitability by the editor, it will be peer-reviewed by an associate editor and single blind peer-reviewed by expert referees who may choose whether or not to remain anonymous. Find out more about what to expect during peer review and read our guidance on publishing ethics.

Word limits

Please include a word count for your paper.

A typical paper for this journal should be no more than 8,000 words; this limit does not include tables; references; figure captions; footnotes; endnotes.
