Gender Diversity and Health
Transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse people make up a minoritized population that experiences multiple health disparities and social stigma. Recent research has begun to explore the extent and variety of these health disparities, evaluate individual, interpersonal, community, societal, and structural mechanisms contributing to them, and suggest ways to address them. The scientific community recognizes the need to develop better measures and methods to assess the unique health needs of this diverse population. The gender identities and life experiences of people included under the umbrella term of transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse are exceedingly varied and ongoing research seeks to understand the breadth of this population.Transgender is used to describe persons whose gender identity differs from the sex assigned to them at birth.People whose gender is outside of the binary construct of man or woman use various terms to describe themselves, including nonbinary, genderqueer, gender fluid, agender, among others, as well as culturally specific terms used in different parts of the world. The terms transgender and nonbinary are not mutually exclusive. The term gender diverse refers to persons whose gender identity, including their gender expression, does not match what is perceived as the norm in a particular context at a particular point in time. This term is a way to describe people without reference to a specific cultural norm, in a manner that is more affirming. In the U.S there are an estimated 1.3 to 2.4 million transgender people (Flores, 2016).
Gender diverse people who have multiple minoritized identites experience the interlocking forces of societal oppression (transphobia, homophobia, racism, sexism, ableism, xenophobia, ageism, etc.) with deleterious effects on health and well-being. Access to healthcare that is gender affirming remains difficult for gender diverse people in most parts of the world.Exacerbating this lack of access to care is the fact that many training programs for nurses and other healthcare professionals provide minimal or no instruction about caring for gender diverse people. In the face of multiple ongoing challenges, many gender diverse people develop coping skills;seek out social support, resources, and information from others in their community;and advocate for their needs. As the World Professional Association for Transgender Health is poised to release the updated version of the Standards of Care for transgender, nonbinary, and gender diverse people (version 8) in Spring 2022, this special issue of the Journal of Nursing Scholarship will showcase recent advances in the field. The special issue will emphasize the contribution that nurses and others are making to this impactful and expanding area of research.
We are interested in publishing original research manuscripts, systematic reviews, policy reviews, and commentaries which will build the evidence base to move toward health equity for gender diverse people across the lifespan and around the globe.
