Literature Review Sentence Template for Writing Literature Review
The literature review is an essential part of academic writing, consisting of two main aspects. Firstly, it involves understanding the research progress on the chosen topic (literature analysis). Secondly, it includes analyzing the shortcomings or unexplored areas in existing research to establish the direction of one's own study (literature critique).
While writing a literature review may seem straightforward, it often proves challenging. Many scholars encounter difficulties in identifying the deficiencies in existing research, leading to feedback such as, "Unable to pinpoint the shortcomings in previous studies." Alternatively, some papers may only state that "this study has limited research," failing to demonstrate the value of their own research. Consequently, even after multiple revisions to the literature review, gaining approval from reviewers remains elusive.
To address this issue, we have compiled ten commonly used sentence templates for literature review, aimed at providing a reference for young and mid-career scholars.
01
One, "One-sentence" Literature Critique (① Existing research is controversial, ② The research problem holds theoretical and practical value)
Sentence Template 1-1: "However, in the realm of [mention the specific issue], economists have not yet reached a unified and convincing consensus."
Note: This type of sentence template applies when there is genuine controversy in existing research and when the research problem still holds theoretical and practical value. Overall, this template is relatively easy to emulate, with low complexity in implementation.
Sentence Template 1-2: "The [mention specific literature] on [mention the issue being studied] serves as the earliest and most comprehensive basis for existing research, but it is fraught with various doubts."
Note: This sentence template is applicable when identifying a highly relevant and comprehensive literature source related to the research problem and discovering its issues or deficiencies. While this template is somewhat easier to emulate, it does present some challenges in execution.
02
Two, "Two-sentence" Literature Critique
Sentence Template 2-1: "However, regarding the most influential and representative [mention the research objects] in various [mention the study subjects], there is still a scarcity of mature research works. Among the limited existing research, some researchers have only conducted partial analyses on [mention the specific aspects of your research objects], failing to fully demonstrate the overall picture of [mention what research is lacking]."
Note: This sentence template applies to situations where there is a lack of relevant research on the specific research objects of your study, and most studies focus on the higher-level concepts of your research objects. It's essential to use appropriate citations. Overall, this template is relatively easy to emulate, with low complexity in implementation.
Sentence Template 2-2: "Thus, theoretically, the [mention what research] can yield two completely contrasting conclusions. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct empirical tests for the two competing theoretical logics."
Note: This sentence template is similar to Sentence Template 1-1, and both require existing research to be controversial. However, the distinction lies in this template being suitable for studies employing a new methodological perspective, not limited to "new method perspectives" as in Sentence Template 1-1. Overall, this template is relatively easy to emulate, but it involves some complexity in execution.
Sentence Template 2-3: "However, most of the empirical examinations supporting [mention what research] adopt [mention what method]. The advantages of [mention this method] lie in..., while its disadvantages are..."
Note: This sentence template also applies to methodological evaluations from a "method perspective." However, unlike Sentence Template 2-2, which focuses on the "theoretical and empirical" aspects, this template specifically concentrates on a particular method and its pros and cons. Overall, this template is relatively easy to emulate, but it involves some complexity in execution.
03
Three, "Three-sentence" Literature Critique
Sentence Template 3-1: "Existing research lays the foundation for [mention the research area], but it also exhibits clear limitations [specify the limitations]. As these studies primarily focus on [mention the specific research objects], the underlying assumptions naturally hold. However, when [mention the contextual changes], issues arise due to [mention the problems brought by the contextual changes], highlighting the inadequacy of existing research in explaining [mention the research topic]."
Note: This sentence template applies when existing research viewpoints may become inapplicable due to certain contextual changes. Overall, this template is more challenging to emulate but involves relatively manageable complexity in execution.
Sentence Template 3-2: "In summary, [mention what research] yields various positive and negative impacts, making the influence of [mention the research topic] uncertain. Therefore, further empirical research is required to clarify [mention what research]. Moreover, it is essential to acknowledge that factors like [mention specific factors] may not fully characterize [mention what research]. To comprehensively depict [mention what research], employing a direct measure of [mention what can measure the research topic] may be necessary."
Note: This sentence template is similar to Sentence Template 1-1 and Sentence Template 2-2, as it also revolves around "controversial research viewpoints." However, this template is more comprehensive, incorporating an additional evaluation sentence, which adds novelty to the paper. Overall, this template is more challenging to emulate but involves relatively manageable complexity in execution.
04
Four, "Four-sentence" Literature Critique
Sentence Template 4-1: "I fully agree with this criticism. However, besides [mention the viewpoint of the scholar], it may also be necessary to consider [mention the paper's approach]. The inclusion of [mention the paper's approach] is essential because [explain why the paper's approach is necessary]. Considering the points discussed above, it becomes evident that [mention the research] appears significantly outdated in light of current realities."
Note: This sentence template is similar to Sentence Template 3-1, as both are based on "changes in context leading to deficiencies in existing research viewpoints." However, Sentence Template 4-1 is more "moderate," as it does not directly negate existing research. Instead, it subtly points out that while the paper acknowledges the mentioned viewpoint, contextual changes may render it "outdated." Overall, this template is relatively easy to emulate, with manageable complexity in execution.
05
Five, "Five-sentence" Literature Critique
Sentence Template 5-1: "However, compared to the extensively discussed [mention what research], this type of [mention a similar research] has not received sufficient attention from the [academic community/scholars]. Furthermore, there are theoretical flaws present in such [similar research]. Nevertheless, it is precisely because of the manifestation of these [similar research's real-world outcomes] and the specific characteristics they exhibit [mention the characteristics] that their potential harm becomes even more significant. Therefore, whether from a theoretical or practical standpoint, there is an urgent need for a more focused and targeted analysis of [mention the similar research]. Only through rigorous scientific exploration of [mention the similar research] from an academic perspective can we clarify the essence of these issues and ultimately discover appropriate solutions for governance."
Note: This sentence template is similar to Sentence Template 2-1, as both are based on the scarcity of relevant research on the paper's research objects. However, Sentence Template 5-1 is more comprehensive, as it not only highlights the limited existing research but also points out the theoretical and practical problems present in such research, thus emphasizing the urgency of conducting the study. Overall, this template is more challenging to emulate, with a higher level of complexity in execution.
06
Six, "Six-sentence" Literature Critique
Sentence Template 6-1: "The relevant discussions have actually revolved around [mention the dimensions/perspectives of existing research], examining various perspectives from the existing literature and providing individual evaluations for each. However, the current discourse has fallen into a dilemma, shifting the focus away from the essence of the problem [mention the essence of the problem], and evolving into a mere [summarize the nature of the current discourse]. To address the ongoing debate within [mention the research perspective], we aim to introduce a novel perspective, namely [mention the paper's new perspective]. The introduction of this new perspective is essential because [explain the significance of introducing the new perspective]. At its core, this new perspective seeks to [mention how the new perspective enriches the discourse], the discussion surrounding [mention the research topic]."
Note: This sentence template has a wide range of applications, not only for introducing a "new perspective" within this particular article but also suitable for other types of literature critiques. It involves evaluating various types of literature, summarizing their shared issues, and subsequently introducing the paper's own approach. Overall, this template is more challenging to emulate, but it involves relatively manageable complexity in execution.
